NHL Free Agncy (Open Thread)

Today is the day that teams are allowed to offer contracts to Unrestricted and Restricted Free Agents.

I'm a huge Detroit Red Wings fan and this is my list of players I think Detroit is in on:

Current Red Wings:

1. Brunner - they need to work out a deal and get him locked up for another 2-4  years. I'm hoping its around a $2.5 M cap hit.

2. Dan Cleary - I wish they would cut ties with him, but I don't see Holland letting him go. I just pray Cleary doesn't make more than $3 M per season.

3. Filpulla - I think he's long gone, but if he gets a rude awakening with offers from other teams then I'd love to see him back in the Winged Wheel for $4 M over 2 or 3 years.

Free Agents:

1. Stephen Weiss - he's a very good centerman that has produced a ton for Florida during his career. He would be great as a 2nd line center and would allow Detroit to put Datsyuk and Zetterberg together on the top line.

2. Mikhail Grabovski - he can play center and wing. He's also a great skater that has a lot of talent. He's also a good friend of Datsyuk and played on his line during the lockout in the KHL. I think he'd be a great fit in Detroit and is immaturity would be squashed if he had Datsyuk as his Russian mentor.

3. Mike Ribeiro - talented playmaker that is getting towards the outskirts of his prime. He's not great defensively and he's had some character issues in the past, but I wouldn't mind Detroit taking a flyer on him for a year or 2.

4. Daniel Alfreddson - there is no way he leaves Ottawa is there? He's out of his prime and very close to retirement, but he still has something left in the tank. He would be a good 2nd line player that could help Detroit out on the PP with that right handed shot.

Fil is gone the wings want another 1-3 top d man but a second line center is #1 on the list along with Brunner. I wouldn't mind seeing cleary go.

I know it is a slim chance, but I would love to see the Wings go after David Clarkson from the Devils. He is a scrappy guy that can score and that is exactly what the Wings need. There will be a hefty price tag for him however.

The Wings have $10.7mil available in cap, that would be enough to sign Brunner and Clarkson. They would have to make up their minds about what to do with Nyquist however. Then next year Ericsson and Quincey's contracts are finally up which will free up more space.

I think he's going to cost too much and I really don't think he is worth what he is asking. I'd rather see Detroit sign their young guys, get rid of cleary, and sign 2-3 free agents. Ie Grabovski, Weiss, and Ference if they want a defenseman.

I don't think Fil is worth 4M, TBH. Cleary is a nice player, but not worth 3 and we can move on.

I'd be content with Grabovski and resigning Brunner to a 3 year deal....

I think with DeKeyser in the mix we're good on D and its time to see Gus, Andersson, Tatar on the big stage all year.

@RealKyper: Early indication this morn is Alfredsson #Senators doesn't look very good at all and a real possibly he may move. #RedWings frontrunners

As a guy who hates the Senators (for ousting my Canadiens) I would love to see him leave Ottawa. That would be quite a coup if the wings pull it off. For me with VL off to philly...I really don't know who I want the Canadiens to grab. They need a big physical forward who can score and the price tag on Clarkson is way to high for what he's worth IMHE.

I have been on call the past 2 days and the only site I have time to look at is this one. Are you telling me the habs signed Briere? Please tell me you meant they are thinking about it? The last thing we need is another midget forward, especially one who is about as injury prone as you can get.

You know...It's tough as a habs fan to frequent this site and hear (and see) first hand what a good GM will provide for a team all while seeing my Habs make bone head move after bone head move.

I really had some hope for Bergevin but this throws all my hopes out the window. Who could look at that roster and come away with the opinion that the one thing we really need is ANOTHER 5'8" forward who misses five games after every hit he sustains? Hallelujah, hole shit! Where's the Tylenol?

briere is expected to sign with Montreal with a 2 year contract. I would expect a combination of Brunner and either alfie or grab for the wings. my preference is for grab. he is much younger, hates the leafs (after his rant on Twitter about the leafs coaching staff), and has experience playing with datsyuk.

I wanna see Rob Scuderi wearing the winged wheel.Howard needs to stop seeing so many shots.Cleary hopefully follows Fillpula out of town.3 million for Cleary is to much and Fillpula had one good season.Make some moves Holland!

I firmly believe Alfredsson is leaving Ottawa. I believe Sens are aware of this. I also believe Detroit is the frontrunner. #TSN

Yep he said this right before that tweet as well:

Whoops I copied the wrong one:

@DarrenDreger: Red Wings likely destination for Alfredsson, but clearly because of legalities no deal has been agreed to. On the wing with Zetterberg?

Hmmm, I would rather have Grabovski than Alfredsson. If the Wings were a piece away sure but I don't see why we're getting older. I thought the playoffs finally signaled that next year we were gonna bring up some of the young guns

They plan on only bringing up Tatar... and Nyquist/Andersson (Pending they sign) and DeKeyser... You won't know for sure until Camp... Jurco is the only other possible option for an instant impact next year, but It's like seeing a true freshmen make an instant impact in Football at a skill position.

the one or both of the others along with alfredsson then i can live with it, but if not it will be considered a bad signing overall. he is going to be 41 in december and there aren't many player that can produce are over the age of 40...

The callers that hate the Alfredsson signing know little about hockey in the East... I love Alfie... that guy has been so instrumental for the Sens, and he still has CRAZY skill... Pairing him with Zetterberg would be HUGE in keeping Datsyuk and Zetterberg split up... not to mention, Franzen would fit better on a line with them... Also... this caller just called about Grabovski being a better signing than Alfredsson... how so? Grabovski is going to seek 5-6 M easily-- if he even clears waivers... SOme teams might be able to afford the 5-5.5 Price tag on Grabovski before he hits a bidding war on the free market... This new buyout option is really messing with the UFA market...

The Wings line-up is definitely shaping up for 2013-2014... Detroit needs about 3 roster players to be an immediate favorite in their division next year, I think a D-man is a need, I just don't think there's anyone Detroit's management sees out there that's better than their top-6 at the moment. Kindl has really progressed to be a solid top-4 for them, and the addition of DeKeyser for the entire year should prove to really help them out... They'll lose CLeary and Filpulla, but if they sign a combination of Weiss/Grabovski/Alfredsson and/or Trade for Bobby Ryan (like rumored) they should be a cup contender right away.

Just read that he informed Ottawa he is not returning, look good in the Wings wheel with Datsyuk and Zetterburg. Advance apologies to spelling police if I butchered his name...lol
