NFL Pregame Shows on CC and J.H.
From all the NFL pregame show regarding NFL jobs and Jim Harbaugh. The only one I’m going to have problems with is CBS “the NFL today” (not enough DVR’s). Please forgive the format. I’m no journalist, just a UM crackhead.
(NFL Network)NFL GameDay Morning insider Jason La Confora:
-Hearing for two weeks now he’ll be going to AA.
-People close to him say he isn’t sure he ready to make NFL jump.
-Two jobs S.F. and Carolina are not good fits for J.H.
-People in Carolina front office are convinced he’s going to AA.
(ESPN) Sunday NFL Countdown insider Adam Schefter:
- John Elways first move will be to talk to J.H. at Orange Bowl.
- It will be up to an NFL team like S.F. or Denver to keep JH from AA.
EXTRA Tom Jackson said before the break that John Elway would convince him to come to Denver (he’s off my X-mas card list)
(FOX)Fox NFL Sunday insider Jay Glazer:
-S.F. has already reached out to JH, if not there going after John Fox, Brian Billick and Chucky.
-(Jimmy, Howie and Terry) said Billick would be a great fit in S.F.
(CBS)The NFL Today insider Charlie Casserly:
-Nothing on JH. I’ll update if I see anything.
So it looks like Denver/SF right now
I’ll add Peter King tonight on NBC’s Football Night in America.

Why they would want a college coach instead of a proven NFL guy like Gruden or Bilick is beyond me.Both of those guys have won Super Bowls.

I am trying hard to recall the last college coach who succeeded in the NFL. Oh, Jimmy Johnson. That's right. One out if ten guys. Hmm, yeah. I don't know.

If you could condense all NFL pregame shows into coherent bullet points like this every week, you would be rich. Until people stopped watching and they were fired two weeks later.

Harbaugh has a deal in principle with Denver to become the new Bronco coach. At the last second, Jeff Tedford is hired as the new coach. As Tedford is introduced by a local marching band, Tedford accidentally trips over the trombone player, causing Elway to proclaim himself the new Denver coach.

Good work my man. It's Harbaugh or RR for me. Have supported Rich and still do, but damn, I am just tired of arguing with everybody that he should stay. If DB pulls the trigger I hope it is a move that unites a fractured fan base. Brady Hoke will not have the same effect.
Also if Harbaugh even agrees to sit down with any of these teams he is not coming to Michigan. In my worthless opinion either a deal is already done or he isn't coming and there is no in between.

We need this, as corny as it sounds... We do.

"Also if Harbaugh even agrees to sit down with any of these teams he is not coming to Michigan. In my worthless opinion either a deal is already done or he isn't coming and there is no in between."
Agreed. If Harbaugh's coming it's cause he's already here.

People close to him say he isn’t sure he ready to make NFL jump
Im probably just understanding this wrong, but i just hope he wont come here for a few years, then decide that he is finally ready for the NFL and leave
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:57 PM ^
Assuming he leaves us in good shape I'd be fine with that. By then we'd likely have:
Assistants off of JH's staff to consider for promotion to head coach.
More data on Hoke to consider if we wanted to go down that road.
Plus we'd also have JH himself in the NFL. That would help with recruiting since we' be able to point to very direct ties to the NFL. Imagine a system where we maintain JH's system and in turn he (and possibly his brother) are snatching up our players on draft day. I'd rather JH stay, but having a very direct line into the NFL would take the sting out of JH leaving.
Edit: Also direct ties would be good not just for players but assistants as well. If we have the Harbaughs occasionally raiding our staff for position coaches we become a very attractive school for ambitious young assistants that want to coach at the pro level someday. You're alway going to lose hot assistants to other coaching gigs, but if our assistants are upgrading to NFL jobs that will make reloading easier.
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
I agree with everything stated in your post.
I've seen some/many posters proclaiming that we can't go after Jim because he would just bolt to the NFL after a few years. Even if JH only stayed at UM for 5 years, he could "right the ship" making UM an attractive option again for another young, hot coach (or as suggested, leave an assistant as successor). Right now UM probably isn't all that attractive given the smoking crater that the program is currently and getting a top shelf coach is probably going to be a tough sell.
I'm just crossing my fingers that the lure of riding in like a white knight in shining armor to save his alma mater will be enough to induce Harbaugh to eschew NFL riches...at least for a few years.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:26 PM ^
What if Harbaugh comes to Michigan for like 5/6 years, has a great run, than decides to move on to the NFL? Is that okay?
Would people be happy with that?
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:40 PM ^
A successful career at Michigan should end in the Ann Arbor cemetary.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:42 PM ^
It's a different world now sir; it's a different world.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
Between 5-6 years of good-to-great success (I hope) and more defensive DOOM, I'll take the 5-6 years with a side of CC.
January 2nd, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
I don't think Florida fans would trade away their 6 years with Meyer. I'm not saying Harbaugh would be that successful, but a program can change significantly in that time.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
How much time would I do for keeping Elway locked up in my basement for two weeks? It might be worth it.
Maybe he can fix the sump pump while he's down there.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
This should be an interesting week, that's for sure.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:52 PM ^
aren't all of us -- that's why we are here reading this blog.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:53 PM ^
The more other teams want him, and the more potentially unattainable JH becomes, the more attractive he becomes as well. Human nature.
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:57 PM ^
This is why chicks dig rock stars, right?
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:54 PM ^
Thanks for the breakdown. I think that if JH is even considering going to the pro ranks, he might as well do it now when his stock is highest. If he comes to UM, he will struggle for at least a year or two while he "gets his guys", at which point the shine will be off his resume a bit and he would have a hard time getting looks from pro teams until UM started winning again. At that point, though, he would probably have been here 4-5 years (if people are patient), and it would be harder to leave.
If JH decides to go to UM, he needs to go with the intent of remaining here indefinitely. If this is viewed as a stepping-stone, I don't think it will work out for him nearly as well as he expects.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
You should consider the flip side. There are a lot of NFL teams he could coach for, but the opportunity to be HC at Michigan will probably never come up for him again. He could be here 5-10 years, build a program and have his pick of NFL jobs if he so chooses
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:57 PM ^
...GA. Appreciate the synopsis.
January 2nd, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
We appreciate your hard work. I am starting to lose sleep over this.

Oh my god. This is completely unrelated, but ESPN just played "Jesus Walks" in the background when Brett Favre entered the stadium.
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
He is "not ready to make the jump to the NFL" scares me, sooo what he's going to come here then be gone in 5 or 6 years? Not what I want to hear.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:34 PM ^
(maybe a NC?), that would be fine with me
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
I'm stuck at work (with the flu) so I appreciate the efforts.
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
If that's really Jim's attitude, that's all the more reason he needs to stay away form Michigan. The day a coach leaves Michigan of his own free will for another job is the day we've truely hit rock bottom and the day I get to say "Told you so" on Harbaugh not actually giving a crap about Michigan.
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:33 PM ^
You realize there is no college program that would be considered a more desirable destination than the NFL right? The NFL is the highest level and any good coach is going to have the confidence to think he can win there. We have to accept that any good college program has to worry about the NFL knocking on their HC's door one day.
January 9th, 2011 at 2:49 PM ^
There have been countless college coaches over the year that were more than qualified for the NFL and did not go. Take your pick of any successful pro-style college coach over the last 40 years, especailly with the insane turnover rate of coaching in the NFL. Every coach we've had after and including Yost has stayed here as long as they were welcome to stay, and while I don't know off the top of my head if any of them ever got a serious NFL look, I would bet a year's salary not a single one of them would have left Michigan for it. It isn't just us, either. When is the last time you've ever heard of a coach bolting for the NFL or another school at Notre Dame? Ohio State? Shoot, even Pete Carroll probably wouldn't have left if USC wasn't about to get slammed in the face with a brick for the crap he was pulling behind the scenes.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
That's a ridiculous comment. There are a number of college teams who weren't "rock bottom" when their coach went to the NFL.
Also, the only reason he'd get poached by the NFL in 6 years is if he has a very successful 6 years at UM. That's not ideal, but I'd go for 6 years of success right now. We'd be a very attractive job for the hottest college coach at the time.
January 9th, 2011 at 2:42 PM ^
And how is that rediculous? Every legend we've ever had was here for a long time because they never wanted to be anywhere else. This wasn't a stepping stone for them, it was their career, and I don't think its asking too much that our next coach would do that should he be successful. Bo fired our basketball coach instead of letting him finish the tournament becuase he took a job elsewhere. Bo himself turned down a huge pay day at TAMU because Michigan meant that much to him.
I don't think we should be interested in a guy who treats us as a stepping stone. We've fallen a long way in the last 3 years, but not that far.
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
John Clayton said suspicion around league was JH to UM. Also said he was SF #1 man and that Denver can't afford ^$$ coach like JH cause they're still paying last 2 coaches. Fingers crossed and starting to think how disappointed I'll be if we don't get JH.
January 2nd, 2011 at 1:56 PM ^
Didn't know that they are still paying Shanahan. What a mess.
Thanks for the hard work GA. Great job. Next 2 weeks should be fun. I hope the servers are revved up
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:22 PM ^
Peter King, via Twitter, yesterday:
One coach told me the other day: "This could turn into the Jim Harbaugh Derby.'' Just watch. It's going to play out over the next few days.
Then:
RT @IllegalShift: Agree with Schefter that Michigan is the team to beat for Jimmy? ... I think Adam is very smart on this one.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:22 PM ^
In all honesty, it wouldn't upset me if he took another job in the NFL 5-10 years down the road so long as he left Michigan in a better spot than they are in now.
I think Jim knows that this is a once in a lifetime shot (to coach at Michigan). You saw how he turned down job opportunities at Kansas, etc last year so he could stay at Stanford, I think that is telling, that he has a plan that he's hoping will work out.
Whether that is the NFL or Michigan, we will find out soon.
January 2nd, 2011 at 2:52 PM ^
Can Michigan snake-oil its prize HC recruit away from the NFL? Film at 11.
January 2nd, 2011 at 3:12 PM ^
Not since Satan to Alabama have I seen so many teams think of one man as their Savior. If he does go to AA I just wonder how long they can keep him.
