NFL Pregame Shows on CC and J.H.

From all the NFL pregame show regarding NFL jobs and Jim Harbaugh. The only one I’m going to have problems with is CBS “the NFL today” (not enough DVR’s). Please forgive the format. I’m no journalist, just a UM crackhead.

(NFL Network)NFL GameDay Morning  insider Jason La Confora:

-Hearing for two weeks now he’ll be going to AA.

-People close to him say he isn’t sure he ready to make NFL jump.

-Two jobs S.F. and Carolina are not good fits for J.H.

-People in Carolina front office are convinced he’s going to AA.

(ESPN) Sunday NFL Countdown insider Adam Schefter:

- John Elways first move will be to talk to J.H. at Orange Bowl.

- It will be up to an NFL team like S.F. or Denver to keep JH from AA.

EXTRA Tom Jackson said before the break that John Elway would convince him to come to Denver (he’s off my X-mas card list)

(FOX)Fox NFL Sunday insider Jay Glazer:

-S.F. has already reached out to JH, if not there going after John Fox, Brian Billick and Chucky.

-(Jimmy, Howie and Terry) said Billick would be a great fit in S.F.

(CBS)The NFL Today insider Charlie Casserly:

-Nothing on JH. I’ll update if I see anything.

So it looks like Denver/SF right now

I’ll add Peter King tonight on NBC’s Football Night in America.

Fuck it, Dude, let's go bowling.

Why they would want a college coach instead of a proven NFL guy like Gruden or Bilick is beyond me.Both of those guys have won Super Bowls.

I am trying hard to recall the last college coach who succeeded in the NFL. Oh, Jimmy Johnson. That's right. One out if ten guys. Hmm, yeah. I don't know.

Harbaugh has a deal in principle with Denver to become the new Bronco coach. At the last second, Jeff Tedford is hired as the new coach. As Tedford is introduced by a local marching band, Tedford accidentally trips over the trombone player, causing Elway to proclaim himself the new Denver coach.

Also if Harbaugh even agrees to sit down with any of these teams he is not coming to Michigan. In my worthless opinion either a deal is already done or he isn't coming and there is no in between.

Assuming he leaves us in good shape I'd be fine with that.  By then we'd likely have:

Assistants off of JH's staff to consider for promotion to head coach.

More data on Hoke to consider if we wanted to go down that road.

Plus we'd also have JH himself in the NFL.  That would help with recruiting since we' be able to point to very direct ties to the NFL.  Imagine a system where we maintain JH's system and in turn he (and possibly his brother) are snatching up our players on draft day.  I'd rather JH stay, but having a very direct line into the NFL would take the sting out of JH leaving.

Edit: Also direct ties would be good not just for players but assistants as well.  If we have the Harbaughs occasionally raiding our staff for position coaches we become a very attractive school for ambitious young assistants that want to coach at the pro level someday.  You're alway going to lose hot assistants to other coaching gigs, but if our assistants are upgrading to NFL jobs that will make reloading easier.

I agree with everything stated in your post.

I've seen some/many posters proclaiming that we can't go after Jim because he would just bolt to the NFL after a few years. Even if JH only stayed at UM for 5 years, he could "right the ship" making UM an attractive option again for another young, hot coach (or as suggested, leave an assistant as successor). Right now UM probably isn't all that attractive given the smoking crater that the program is currently and getting a top shelf coach is probably going to be a tough sell.

I'm just crossing my fingers that the lure of riding in like a white knight in shining armor to save his alma mater will be enough to induce Harbaugh to eschew NFL riches...at least for a few years.

We ARE Michigan....COME GET SOME!!!

Thanks for the breakdown.  I think that if JH is even considering going to the pro ranks, he might as well do it now when his stock is highest.  If he comes to UM, he will struggle for at least a year or two while he "gets his guys", at which point the shine will be off his resume a bit and he would have a hard time getting looks from pro teams until UM started winning again.  At that point, though, he would probably have been here 4-5 years (if people are patient), and it would be harder to leave.

If JH decides to go to UM, he needs to go with the intent of remaining here indefinitely.  If this is viewed as a stepping-stone, I don't think it will work out for him nearly as well as he expects.

You should consider the flip side. There are a lot of NFL teams he could coach for, but the opportunity to be HC at Michigan will probably never come up for him again. He could be here 5-10 years,  build a program and have his pick of NFL jobs if he so chooses

If that's really Jim's attitude, that's all the more reason he needs to stay away form Michigan. The day a coach leaves Michigan of his own free will for another job is the day we've truely hit rock bottom and the day I get to say "Told you so" on Harbaugh not actually giving a crap about Michigan.

You realize there is no college program that would be considered a more desirable destination than the NFL right?  The NFL is the highest level and any good coach is going to have the confidence to think he can win there.  We have to accept that any good college program has to worry about the NFL knocking on their HC's door one day.

There have been countless college coaches over the year that were more than qualified for the NFL and did not go. Take your pick of any successful pro-style college coach over the last 40 years, especailly with the insane turnover rate of coaching in the NFL. Every coach we've had after and including Yost has stayed here as long as they were welcome to stay, and while I don't know off the top of my head if any of them ever got a serious NFL look, I would bet a year's salary not a single one of them would have left Michigan for it. It isn't just us, either. When is the last time you've ever heard of a coach bolting for the NFL or another school at Notre Dame? Ohio State? Shoot, even Pete Carroll probably wouldn't have left if USC wasn't about to get slammed in the face with a brick for the crap he was pulling behind the scenes.

That's a ridiculous comment. There are a number of college teams who weren't "rock bottom" when their coach went to the NFL.

Also, the only reason he'd get poached by the NFL in 6 years is if he has a very successful 6 years at UM. That's not ideal, but I'd go for 6 years of success right now. We'd be a very attractive job for the hottest college coach at the time.

And how is that rediculous? Every legend we've ever had was here for a long time because they never wanted to be anywhere else. This wasn't a stepping stone for them, it was their career, and I don't think its asking too much that our next coach would do that should he be successful. Bo fired our basketball coach instead of letting him finish the tournament becuase he took a job elsewhere. Bo himself turned down a huge pay day at TAMU because Michigan meant that much to him.

I don't think we should be interested in a guy who treats us as a stepping stone. We've fallen a long way in the last 3 years, but not that far.

In all honesty, it wouldn't upset me if he took another job in the NFL 5-10 years down the road so long as he left Michigan in a better spot than they are in now.

I think Jim knows that this is a once in a lifetime shot (to coach at Michigan). You saw how he turned down job opportunities at Kansas, etc last year so he could stay at Stanford, I think that is telling, that he has a plan that he's hoping will work out.

Whether that is the NFL or Michigan, we will find out soon.
