NFL Network now reporting 6yr 48M offer

Submitted by Gob1ue22 on

Ian Rapport just came on NFL network saying this is UM's 2nd offer (I know, the same guy shooting down all the other Harbaugh rumors). I know this was reported earlier on the home page of the blog as a random rumor from some Arizona reporter, but this seems to be turning into more than just a rumor.

Sources: #Michigan has made another run at Jim Harbaugh after he initially rebuffed the school. U-M has made an offer of 6 years, $48M. Wow.

This would make Harbaugh the highest paid coach in all of football (both college & NFL) at just over 8M/year.

Obviously Michigan doesn't want to get outbid.  I'm a little uncomfortable with those numbers, but if the base is 5-6M and the major donors make up the difference, for some reason it's more palatable.  It makes no sense except that we're raising the bar for the profession and you know someone in the SEC will eclipse it shortly.

I can also see Dantonio & co. mocking us for proving our "arrogance" by over-paying.

I can't explain it, but 8 years at 49M seemed about right to me.

For what its worth Miami and Oakland are reported to have the lowest paid head coaches in the league, which makes them unlikely to get in a bidding war.

Ok here's what Kawakami's motives are, if Harbaugh leaves what does he have left, the Giants and the Warriors to report on, as far as football goes he has no story, Stanford, the 49ers and the Raiders will be..boring and average at best, screw him, he's just trying to protect his job, if we get Harbaugh no will ever remember his name...Go Blue

If this is indeed true, I am glad to see my alma mater offer "go to hell" money in the face of what would be some potentially stiff competition for the services of one Jim Harbaugh. I will say, however, that I don't remember any initial rebuff - pretty sure that there hasn't really been an answer one way or the other.

It's a tweet but I'm sick of how vague all of this shit is. Changed it how? What did he change it from. 160 characters isn't enough for me to really remember. Can't these fuckers post actual articles from time to time. Twitter makes for sloppy journalism.

why in the world would Michigan offer him this contract if his earlier report was correct that we asked if he was interested and were told no?

This is why I keep saying this all speculation until there is a press conference announcing our new coach.

Just posted on Adam Schefter's FB:

Reports from @JoePequenoCBS5 and @rapsheet about Michigan offer to Jim Harbaugh. Here's what I know:

Multiple NFL and Michigan sources had said for weeks 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh was not expected to wind up at Michigan, but in recent days at least one person familiar with his thinking said he was at least “considering it.”
Another person close to the process said that while it was possible Harbaugh could wind up at Michigan, “it was not likely.”
Asked why he was considering it now, but hadn’t been previously, one person said now that the 49ers are out of the playoffs, it was possible for Harbaugh to at least consider it.
Bottom line: Harbaugh has some thinking to do and decisions to make.

in other words, people talked to Harbaugh a few weeks ago and he said he was focused on winning games in San Fransisco and he is not thinking about Michigan which they then interpreted as "Jim says he wants to stay in the NFL."

What a joke.  Of course he was going to say that in the middle of a playoff race.  The rest of it was just made up conjecture

God help us if Harbaugh is offered a guaranteed 6 year, 48 million dollar conract and things don't quite work out as expected.

Is it deep pockets or desperation or both?

It's both. It makes me ill that Michigan would have to offer that kind of money because we've been led to believe that money doesn't matter all that much to Jim. Maybe that much money does. I'm sure if the fan base wanted him bad enough we could all make a 10 dollar donation and bump it up to 9 mill.
