Personally I love the NFL draft. I enjoy seeing the players dreams come true and I am hoping for my Lions to get this one right. Enjoy the event.
fair point that
Some MAC love...
Mike Mayock seems to think so.
Same with McShay and Kiper
I like the NFL. They actually make kids spend more than one year in school. Unlike the NBA, who sucks major talent out of the college game. And in hockey, it is ten times worse. You not only have the NHL to worry about, but the CHL and other junior leagues.
NBA should sack up and make the required years in college 2 or 3 at the most. Obiviously nothing can be done about hockey though.
I would like the NBA to make it two years, it would make College Basketball much better. I don't know much about hockey
I agree with you on the fact they SHOULD stay 2 or 3 years, but the majority of the top kids would most likely rather go overseas and get paid for those 2-3 years.
Well yeah but in hockey the college game wasn't ever considered a true breeding ground for young players. In the chl's three leagues they play a season that more resembles the NHL (more games and not just Friday/Saturday nights with little to no travel between those games). I personally prefer to attend a college game and would encourage youngsters to attend and play in the NCAA but I also understand if you are a top talent the CHL is the way to go to best develop your skills.
I said it in the thread yesterday (or was it two days ago?), but I really hope the Lions trade down. Move back to the mid to late 20s, and get a 2nd and 4th or 5th rounder and I would be a happy camper. I wouldn't be entirely upset if we took Cooper though, which feels weird to say seeing as he is a guard, but he seems like a surefire solid player. not to metnion he could potentially player center too. I like that there isn't a consensus number 1 or even top 5 this year, really adds to the intrigue IMO.
Everyone always says trade down but it rarely happens. Let's just hope the Lions don't F the #5 pick up
Dream on. Loser is what Loser does. Expect 30+ years of draft failure to continue. That's what has caused what you've seen on the field. I grew up in the Detroit area but I gave up long ago. Until the Ford family relinquishes ownership, the mediocrity will continue.
Thank god Al Davis finally died
That's an awful thing to say regardless of who it is.
Calvin Johnson, Suh,and Stafford yeah what shitty decisions they made. throw in delmas,Levi,Pettigrew, have been solid picks the jury is still out on Reiff,Fairley,Broyles, and LeShoure.
Those were pretty obvious choices that anyone could have made. Pettigrew should be doing way better for where he was taken. Levy was a decent pick. Broyles and LeShoure need to show alot. Regardless you can't sugarcoat it, Mayhew has not drafted well after the first round.
It doesn't matter he still made the pics Javid Best was a great pick just got injured, Titus young was a solid pick just crazy, Sammie hill,Jason fox,Levy,Young all solid picks for the later rounds
How are they solid picks!!!! It's a solid pick based on what they do. Jahvid Best had his injury issues before, Titus is no longer here, Jason Fox has never played!!!! What in the heck are you talking about solid picks?! Are you Mayhew himself?!
I'm talking about when the picks were made, a team that hits on 50pct of their picks in one draft is a very successful draft.
Best was a terrible pick. He had major injury questions and was an undersized back. Not a good choice at the end of the first round. Third round maybe. Young had major discipline issues and wasn't at a position of dire need and is gone.
Levy and Young were not later round picks. They were 3rd and 2nd round. Those rounds should get you starters.
Sammie hill was a solid pick and Jason Fox, other than being injury prone, is completely unknown.
The Lions have not drafted well in a long time.
CJ is the only solid pick in that bunch. Stafford is overrated. He is bloating up more than Mike Williams. He may have a solid arm, but his accuracy is very suspect. Suh is a headcase. He has a probowl physicality with a scout team head.
Bingo. The Lions are a real Munson. Until the Ford give up their ownership nothing will change. They will continue to undermine their GM.
Is there any hope that a Big Ten player gets selected in the first round at ALL?
I can't remember the statistic, but that hasn't happened in like 60 years or so.
I don't remember his name, because OSU, but he's been mentioned in a lot of mocks in the last 10 of the first round.
Hankins or Simon. Hankins is the one that Rich Rod decided not to offer. Hankins at one point was a potential first round pick but I think that perception has changed, same with Simon.
I think early mock drafts had him as a top 15 pick.
all the way through. Great college player, but is going to be limited in the NFL due to his size and athleticism. Not athletic enough to play DE, but not big enough to play DT. He is being looked at 3-4 OLB which I'm not sure is his best fit but he would be fine as a run stopping OLB.
Hankins have the talent, but he is inconsistent and there's questions about his motivation (main reason why MSU and Michigan passed on him). He is projected as a 2nd/3rd round pick.
Rich Rod did offer Hankins. Before OSU actually. Unfortunately, his HS coach was Archie Collins, so there was no way he was going to end up at UM.
I thought Michigan waited way to long to offer because Hankins was a bway overweight most of his senior year. By the time we got back in the game, I think he had decided to go elsewhere
Nope, you have it exactly wrong. Hankins performance at the camps revealed really terrible conditioning, and RR held off offering him until after OSU did. Eventually we did, but by then it was too late.
If Lewan didn't "Shock The World" and return for his senior season, he would likely be a 1st round draft pick. For the sake of not invoking Section 1, I think we all know the reason behind our current drought.
Does anyone think he wouldn't be the overall #1 had he come out? Isn't he better than Fisher and Joeckel? If not, then top 5 at least, maybe someone trading up?
Eric Fisher is pretty damn good. Watch his film if you haven't. I think Lewan would be behind both Fisher and Jockel.
"SECTION 1, SECTION 1, SECTION 1, SECTION 1!!!!!!!"
The Ryan Mallett thread.
We won't know if the Lions got this right until the offseason to see whether or not the guy gets a DUI or an assault charge.
until we see a scan of his collarbone.
I've had so many problems with my zeppelin this week that I haven't had the chance to pay attention.
I really think that Fisher from CMU will go first overall.
Most places have reported this already.
Who does it better? NFL Network or ESPN? I'm leaning towards NFL Network because of Rich Eisen.
Definitely NFL network, because fuck Chris Berman. Dude has been using the same lines for over 30 years and has always annoyed the shit out of me, along with the rest of the talking heads at ESPN.
to think about the hypotheticals of these small school players having come to a bigger school and wondering if they would still be where they are now.
For instance, imagine if we had recruited and gotten Fisher...do you think he would have been an all star on Michigan and be in position to be the #1 pick?
Which wins? Round denard is drafted in + 2.5 or trey Burke overall pick. Example denard drafted 3 rd round plus 2.5=5.5 Burke would have to be drafted 5th or higher.
2 great players with different pro prospects
My Raiders trade down
wish we got more for it, but better than nothing right?
LETS GET THIS THING STARTED
As long as the bears do not take manti teo with their first pick, things will be okay.
I think they should take a CB or DT if they have to stay at 20. I would love it if they could trade back to get better value on maybe a late first / early 2nd pick, but I think a lot of teams want to move back.
This is definitely the year to start rebuilding the defense. It would be worthwhile to get as many 2/3 round picks as we can. We would have a year to evaluate/develop them before deciding what to do with the defense. Our long-term options at LB, CB, and DT definitely need some attention this draft. But obviously if a good olinemen is available, we still need a lot of help there.
