And the reason for that; the urgency is... what? I can understand the process, the decisionmaking involved, and the relative risks and benefits on both sides of the ulitmate equation. But any choice that prematurely limits all future choices just seems inexplicable to me. I mean, it would be one thing if Donovan hired a personal attorney who was NOT a registered agent, and therefore NOT someone whose mere existence killed your collegiate career. Somebody to help him weigh options, apart from the Michigan football program. I'm not criticizing the choice neccessarily, but is it not evident that the choice was made as soon as some information came in, but not all information? And this -- is Donovan's ankle really okay? To me, that seemed like the best reason to come back. Get fantastic, world-class, NFL-level orthopedic treatment at U-M, another year with Barwis, and a year to be the stud corner in the nation, and then come out as a First-rounder.

I am in some agreement with his take on Warren, but I think mid-second round is even optimistic for him. I disagree, however, with his comment on Graham. I think he is going to have a very good NFL career and could well be an annual pro-bowler before all is said and done.

What are you trying to say? His comments made perfect sense. He thinks Warren should stay to improve his draft status, and he thinks Graham is a beast that will do awesome in the NFL. Don't make Shaky Jake slap the taste out cho mouf.

If he's not going to get picked in the first round, it really doesn't matter much at all where he's drafted. The difference in signing bonuses and salaries drastically falls off after the first 32. If Warren is as good as we've seen in flashes, and as good as he thinks he is, he will get the second contract that will set him up for life. I support Warren's decision, and look forward to Turner replacing him next year. Dream draft for the Lions: OT Russell Okung in round one. Brandon Graham in round two. Donovan Warren in round three.

If the Rams don't do the unthinkable and leave Suh available, I would rather see the Lions trade down and take both an OL and a DL in the first round. It would definitely be great to see BG in an Lions' uniform, though, especially if they turn it around and become a real NFL team.

I know that Rosenhaus is universally despised around the NFL, and, given the fact that Warren is not a slam dunk first round pick, I think that may hurt him. Personally, it is Warren's life, and if he feels like he is ready to go, then I wholeheartedly support him. I am little surprised that he did not wait for all of the evaluations from the NFL, since there really is no reason to sign the agent without all of this information from the people who actually do the drafting. I tend to agree that he is probably a third round prospect given his lack of polish and inconsistency at the college level, but I think that he will probably be drafted higher due to the position he plays.

1) No ned to sign with an agent at this point 2) Lack of feedback from those who will pesumably be your next bosses 3) Playing cornerback probably=getting drafted higher I think it's safe to say Warren was just flat out done with college, and his reasoning is up to him to, er, reason with, and we'll never know all the, er, reasons. It'll all come down to the combines. If he puts up good numbers, he'll go high. If not, HELLLOOO Toronto Argonauts!

I will root for Warren to be successful in the NFL, regardless of where he gets drafted. It sucks that he left, but I do not blame him. Next year will be rough again on defense, but maybe we will have some surprises.

Yeah, but not as rough as it's going to be on defense for *him*. Some of his technique and inconsistent play won't lead to a couple bad plays and a few first downs, in the NFL, those are touchdowns and game changers. Best of luck, although he could certainly use another year to get better and stronger...but hey we don't know the circumstances and it's not all about football when it comes to these decisions. ($$)

Agreed. We'd have to be pretty arrogant to think that we know everything that went into his decision, and therefore we need to step back and respect him for what he decided. He's not a dumb kid, he made a decision to leave based on the information given to him, and he made the decision best for him.

FWIW, a lot of NFL scouts think Todd McShay is clueless. Here is a post from PFT explaining why Jake Locker decided to come back for his senior season. McShay said he could possibly be the first pick and Locker didn't even get a first round grade. Having said that, I still think Warren should have stuck around for one more year, but i understand the desire to go pro and wish him the best of luck. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/12/18/locker-didnt-get-a-firs…

I agree that if Warren would have stuck around for the final year he would have been able to polish up his game and came out in a draft where this wasnt as much talent as this one. Still wish him the best of luck and definately can't fault a kid for trying to get paid in a game where the next snap might be your last.

Warren is in a position to get drafted in the first 4 rounds of the draft. Instead of having to go to class, he will be paid to play the game he came to Michigan to play. He's an elite athlete and will significantly improve with the excellent coaching he will receive in the NFL. If Morgan Trent can get significant time in the NFL, Donovan Warren will do the same. If Donovan wants to go pro, and it's always been his dream, that's the end of the discussion. Again, if he plays well, he will get the second contract that sets him up for life. IME, starting that process now, instead of in 2011, is the right thing for him to do.

When you leave early, you leave early with the intention of being taken in the 1st or 2nd rounds. Yes, he'll be payed to play the game but contract terms change after each round. Someone else will have to help with this, but after the first 2 rounds, don't players lose a substantial amount of guaranteed clauses in their contracts (in addition to pay)?

I am surprised that no one has brought up that the coming year will likely be the last draft without some sort if rookie salary cap. You better believe all the agents are calling up the juniors to explain how much money they stand to lose if they don't come out early, or how the NFL could have a lockout the following year and they may have to wait even longer for their NFL dream to become a reality. Many, many juniors who would benefit from another year of school will take their chances and their lower round money this year and avoid the chances of smaller contracts next year, if there even is a next year.

I know what we have to do to get Donovan Warren to stay: Become facebook friends with him. Shit, if enough people friend him, I bet we can get him to stay for his PhD!
