NFL 53-man cuts: Grim for former Wolverines

Submitted by gopoohgo on

Manningham cut by Giants (injury)
Gallon cut by Patriots (injured most of camp)
Campbell cut by Jets
Touissant cut by Ravens
Kovacs cut by Dolphins

Manningham will sign somewhere if he passes a physical.
Fitz and Kovacs will be practice squad guys.

Dunno about Campbell and Gallon.

Thought I read somewhere Manningham's injury was a season ender, could be wrong though. However that would pretty much keep him unsigned I'd have to imagine.

I hope someone just give Gallon a chance to play and I think they will be happy with the outcome. Gallon can be a real good slot guy when healthy.

Does anyone know what Gallon's injury was? I kept seeing that he was on the PUP list, but never heard why. He wasn't ever injured at UM, from what I remember. Huge bummer he got dinged up during training camp.

They're infamous for NHL-like "upper body injury" and listing basically half the team on the injury report week to week.

So, there's no real info on what Gallon's injury (injuries?) are. However, there is a feeling that they want him on the 10-man practice squad, so my guess/hope is they're not too bad.

I think the difference in counting is b/c Brady missed the entire 2008 season, but yes, Brady has had multiple years long streaks of being listed on the injury report. He was always "probable" -- it's ridiculous.

For whatever reason, Belichek stopped doing that (consistently) in 2011 -- I wonder if the NFL told him to knock it off?

I'm not going to lie - I never thought Kenny Demens would stick around in the NFL, and yet this is now two seasons he has at least made the practice squad.

Molk is going to be one of those centers who plays in the NFL forever because he's smart and knows his limitations.  Happy to see him on the Eagles where his type of play will be a good fit.

He's been affected by injuries, and then (to be frank) so-so performance ever since he was a #1 Eagles pick, and there were reports he might get cut. Thankfully, he made the 53-man roster.

Hopefully, he'll be able to have a good year and make a real impact.

He's technically an LB, and there were issues b/c there were 4 coordinators in 4 years, and he mentioned being "lost" occasionally, which is never good. But now that it's the same coordinator two years in a row, BG has to just do it. I read an interview a week or so ago where he recognized that, and sounded fired up, so hopefully he'll stay healthy and be productive.

Apparently, the Patriots wanted Gallon on the practice squad but he declined.  As a Pats fan, I am disappointed.  I think he would eventually have found a role on the team.  But he is very talented and probably has some better prospects elsewhere.

FYI Mallet was traded to the Texans.

But I can only guess what is happening with him now.  Gallon may think he has a better chance to make it on other teams.  The Pats squad is stacked.  Or maybe Gallon now sees that he could get injured for little benefit on a practice squad and wants to hold out for a real roster opening.  That could come at any time due to injuries.  If the Pat's Amendola gets injured as has been usual, I wouldn't be surprised for the Pats to take him back.  Occasionallly, they have filled roster spots with players not currently under contract with anyone.  Or, as you suggest: Gallon may not be making a rational choice in the immediate aftermath of a let down.

Given that at least a dozen other cuts were not mentioned as having declined the practice squad, I assume that those not offered a spot would not be mentioned.  Also, the Pats will not finalize their 10-man squad until Monday.  So, unless Gallon declined, I would assume that he would still be in the running for a spot until the final squad was chosen.  Also, everything I had read here in Boston was that the Pats wanted to keep Gallon --he would have been a perfect backup for the often-injured slot receiver, Amendola.  It appeared that the Pats hoped he would clear wavers and sign with the practice squad.  That way, they could have gotten a better look at him, since they had not had much time to evaluate him while healthy.  So, it's hard for me to imagine that he would not have been offered a spot.

operates in mysterious ways.  A damn good HC and his player personnel decisions usually seem to work, but maybe it just wasn't in the cards.

I was hoping that Gallon would take advantage of the opportunity and stick with the Pats, but injuries to late-round draft choices and free agents are usually costly to their chances.  Maybe he'll find a place to play more suited to his talents.  Better luck wherever you now land, Jeremy!
