We found an overrated DE who had been missing for 3.5 quarters. If he is yours, please pick him up from Taylor Lewan who now owns him.

Overrated??  C'mon now.  I'm annoyed by the negative publicity Michigan is getting on this one as much as the next guy but:  (1) it was a great hit, and (2) Clowney is a beast, at top 5 pick in next year's draft unless something drastic happens.  He's far from overrated.

Overrated may have been a poor choice of words. But, he has gotten an ungodly amount of hype since that game, a game in which anybody who watched knows that Taylor Lewan won "the battle." Yet, if you watch espn you'd think Clowney was the one who dominated the game.

Every college football fan who doesn't bleed maize and blue acts like this hit was one of the greatest plays in the history of the game.  It sucks to the foil for someone else's highlight poster, but as long as Clowney is still in the game, especially in the promotion for the Outback Bowl, we are going to have to look at it until its "shelf life" runs out.

They finally stopped showing the Kordell Stewart abomination after about ten years.  I have a feeling we may not be a lucky this time.

Well, this seems to fully justify the ill-willed, high-speed race I was in with a car with a South Carolina sticker yesterday as we both hurtled down I-81 towards the Carolinas (I have a Michigan sticker on my car, and it was clearly "on"). I'm happy to say that I won, but in a race between two SUV's, I think the real loser was the environment. I'm also sad to report that I did not reduce the other car to a smoldering wreck. Had I known of this grevious insult to Michigan, I would've edged them off a mountain road somewhere in Virginia.

I mean, I also won because I went to Michigan. *cracks beer.*

Unblocked, my grandma could have made that tackle. Probably not the hit stick, but for sure the tackle. Clowney got HANDLED ALL game by Lewan, and he makes 3 plays the ENTIRE game and he is the hero and player of the game. Deep down inside as any lineman who's ever played competative football knows he's saying...Wow that boy was good, and he handled me. Whoever put that in the paper is an idiot. Probably some dumb MSU fan with no life. Vincent Smith did all the intangible things that DON'T show up on the stat sheet, and made some big plays for us in his career. It's sad to me that this is what people will remember about him. Not the pass protection, toughness, and the fact that he HOPED up like a champion right after the hit. Pisses me off.

Am I missing something there?  People keep telling me it's a clean hit. No it wasn't IMO ... he led with the head.

The ball should be dead in the air when the helmet is blown off Vince's head.  Educate me please.

The rule states...

ARTICLE 9. a. If a player’s helmet comes completely off through play, other than as the direct result of a foul by an opponent, the player must leave the game for the next down. The game clock will stop at the end of the down....

c. If the ball carrier’s helmet comes off as in paragraph a (above) the ball is dead (Rule 4-1-3-q). If the player is not the ball carrier the ball remains alive, but he must not continue to participate in the play beyond the imme- diate action in which he is engaged. Prolonged participation is a personal foul (Rule 9-1-17). By definition such a player is obviously out of the play (Rule 9-1-12-b).

http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/FR13.pdf page 56

The helmet exploding play caused the ball to come out. Does that make Vince not the ball carrier? That seems silly.

The guideline from 1976 is the precedent setting for discouraging spearing.

This is F'd. The adulation is the problem. We haven't learned anything from Daydrion Taylor's hit. Nobody wants to take action and when the action is taken they don't enforce the rules.

In this case the ball should be dead when the helmet came off by rule...Michigan ball just as if it had rolled out of bounds.

They should clarify this so that fumbles should not be allowed when helmets are removed due to the contact that caused it.

The play itself seemed to fit some balance given the 9.9 yard first down previously enforced - which was a case of extreme paralax on the part of the media. I never heard the officials chime in on that either. It looked like the official ruled the chain and not the stick was the 10 yard marker...or else the Clowney hit was just divine justice.
