Newsome injury (seeking) clarification

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

Pardon if this has been stated before, but has there been any indication of what, exactly, Newsome's knee injury was? I saw the Harbaugh quotes from Monday and Saturday indicating that it was as serious as it could be, but you had Clark's injury announced in fairly short order as an ACL.

I'd imagine, from the description, it's possible it's multiple tears, whether it's multiple CL's or a meniscus. I'm just wondering if it's possible Newsome also has to lose either all or most of next season as well.

Whatever the case, best of luck to Grant in his recovery.

I made this joke just the other day TO MY FAMILY THAT HAS SEEN THE MOVIE A MILLION TIMES and they looked at me like a jackass. Better yet, I had just been to the eye doctor, had my pupils dilated about 6x and therefore had to wear sunglasses they gave me. I was bummed nobody put it together ha.

Sam posted behind the scout paywall, but given the severity of the situation this is worth getting out there to avoid misinformation spreading. Thankfully, Grant does not have a career threatening injury. There is minimal structural damage and he may return for spring ball.

Slo-mo replay at 35:36.

Are linemen taught on swing plays like this to go low on cornerbacks?

The announcers say corners are taught to hit linemen in their legs to take them out. In this case he hit a little too high on the leg/knee (assuming their not aiming for the thigh but the shin area)?

I would think if this is the case coaches would teach linemen to know this and go low on their blocks.

Yeah it would be nice for a linemen to get mutliple blocks on a play like this but not if it means risking his season. I'd rather he got the one block and was out of the play and on to the next.

The silence surrounding this issue before now was definitely ominous and it did make me think perhaps the worst, that the injury was perhaps caree-threatening, but this turns that fear right around and - if this above is the case - I think we all would love to see him back in the spring if possible.

Full disclosure - I do not know the specific injury that was suffered and I have not seen any x-rays or scans of the player.

I am not an Orthopod but as a Radiologist, I'll do my best to answer your question about some types of injuries that may be career ending:

One would be a complete dislocation of the knee,  which in addition to multiple ligamentous tears, there is potential for neurovascular injury of the nerves (usually peroneal nerve) and blood vessels (popliteal artery) located behind the knee.  This needs to be treated quickly with surgery.

Another injury that would potentially be career ending would injury be a fracture of the tibial plateau.  This is usually caused by an axial loading injury combined with angulated stress.  This can also be associated with ligamentous and meniscal tears.  Even after repair in young people, this can lead to early osteoarthritis.

Additionally, traumas where there is significant cartilaginous injury can be difficult to recover from as they can lead to early onset of osteoarthritis.

Multiple soft tissue injuries (meniscal/ligamentous tears) associated with osseous injuries (fractures, contusions etc) can be tough to recover from and there can be a long recovery time.

Anyhow, this list is not meant to be exhaustive but hopefully helpful.

You forgot the most important lines you state into your dictophone:

"Recommend clinical correlation"

or

"Cannot rule out..."

or

"Recommend MRI correlation"

- obviously /s. Were you med school '02 at UofM?

My guess based on the replay was a PCL with possible vessel injury requiring fasciotomies. Hence the hospitalization. Fasciotomies are no big deal long term and a PCL is certainly not career threatening.

I've had knee dislocations and if it is a complete dislocation there ain't no way anyone is walking off. I've torn my PCL. That was no big deal but I tore my quad tendon soon after i was cleared for full activity which required emergency surgery so that's a possibility. I also had a knee cap break in half (literally, the x-ray was knarley) which also required prompt surgery so I would think that could be a possibility as well. Yes I have shitty knees for a 31 year old. Between arthritis flare ups I still dominate adult league basketball though.

when you do the MCL, ACL and Meniscus all at once, it's called the Unhappy Triad.  Potentially career threatening.  Others include Knee Joint Dislocation, Posterolateral Corner Injury, Tibial Plataeu Fracture and Patella Tendon Rupture (which I hear is the worst). These are all much more rare than the common ACL or meniscus tears that are much easier to come back from.  When your knee gets completely blown up, there can be any combination of these injuries and the worse it gets.

EDIT: csides answered as I was typing and his answer is far more professional and thorough.

...this is exactly what happened to me.  Spring practice for a small D-III school...played S and the QB overthrew the WR....broke on the ball and the WR stumbled directly into my knee..."bending" it backwards...instant pain and I knew I wouldn't play football again.  This was in '91 so the recovery was much longer.  The knee was never normal again I have numerous issues with it today.  Horrible injury that I wouldn't wish on my enemy.

My knee caps tracked too far out side so I had more and more frequent partial dislocations. Had surgery to fix the right knee, then tore my pcl, then tore my quad tendon in the right knee. Had surgery to fix the tracking in my left knee, then had the knee cap break in half. 5 surgeries.
Been almost 3 years since the last one and aside from occasional arthritis flare ups, I've gotten most of my athleticism back (relative to being 31 compared to 26 before the first surgery).

Your title makes it sound like you are providing us a clarification versus asking us for one.

You should probably change your title to "Newsome injury clarification?" as quickly as possible before all the jackals smell blood.

So...if defensive backs from Wisconsin can take out Michigan o-lineman at the knees, can the Michigan lineman do the same to the suckeye d-lineman and linebackers? Both on the same level of scum and annoyance to me. A badger bed-shitter or a suckeye horses ass. Take out the anger on that garbage from Cbus now I guess. Go Blue!

Edit: Actually I don't like cheap shit like that. I'd rather see some sucknut skulls cracked or broken facemasks. All or anyone in favor of Rashan Gary as the fullback in the wildcat offense? Not sure if they have one for that set though. I do really want to see him and Kalis put Raekwon McMillan into a coma for a week though.

Anyone know how O-linemen decide to wear knee braces? Seems like about half do and half don't (looks like Kalis and Braden do, the other three starters don't). My guess is that it's personal preference as a balance between risk reduction and mobility, but given how often guys chop o linemen and fall into their knees and legs, it seems like it'd be automatic that everyone is wearing one.
