New York Jets Release David Harris

Submitted by Wallaby Court on

Per Adam Schefter, the New York Jets have decided to release David Harris.

Hopefully, Harris will have an opportunity to find success with a new team in the latter half of his career. Rex Ryan hijinks aside, playing for the moribund Jets for ten years cannot have been particularly fun. I'm sure it seems like a good idea to the Jets, but I'm not really seeing the upside for them.

Ten years with the Jets - missed only six games, had 1088 tackes, 35.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, and six interceptions.  He'll be just fine.

He was an unsung hero for the Jets.  Always reliable, always effective, always mature and not drawing attention to himself except in his exceptional play.  He lasted there much longer than most, and contributed much more than most, for a team that hasn't produced much lately.

He's one I'd like to see turn to coaching when his playing time is through. If he still wants to play, more power to him.

He was more than steady and reliable. At times he was elite. I can't find the article anymore, but PFF (I believe it was them) issued a list of top single-season scores in the NFL. The year Darrelle Revis dominated the league and got the top score, the best defensive score in PFF's entire span of scoring players? David Harris got the second best score that year, and if I recall correctly, the second best score in PFF history.

He has been terrific.

Doesn't mean that age and salary won't catch up, but he fulfilled every bit of his promise.

Doesn't this seem like the ripe situation where the Patriots will pick him up -- stick it to the J.E.T.S. JetsJetsJets a little bit, get a veteran who can contribute time to time on D, and a guy hungry to actually, you know, win games, something he's not experienced since college.

Even if this signals a decline in his professional career (I don't really follow the NFL outside of the Lions, so I really have no idea), he did himself proud. Looks like he didn't miss alot of games in his career, which is impressive considering the demands of his position. The fact that he was able to stick around for so long as a traditional middle linebacker is pretty damn impressive. Always one of my favorites when he was at UM. Unsung hero in college and pros. Not flashy, but incredibly effective.

as a jets fan I can tell you this is the teams worst decision since signing Tim Tebow.

They decided to cut the veteran leader of the team, and stick with an overrated second year linebacker who harrasses women at Governors Ball, and a 6th year linebacker that they drafted in the 3rd round and let walk last year.

All this so that Woody Johnson could save a few dollars the team is not going to spend anyway. Cant wait for Trump to formally nominate woody to be embassador to the UK so he can finally walk away from the team.

Lots of NFL observers saw Harris getting released as a real possibility. The real terrible thing here is the way it was handled; as Harris's agents are pointing out, the Jets could've released him much earlier to give him a better shot to find a spot with another team. Way to show a decade-long franchise cornerstone some respect.

David Freaking Harris. My all-time favorite Michigan middle linebacker. He had an odd Michigan career. Lightly recruited out of Grand Rapids. He didn't have much hype coming in..He sat the bench his first 2 seasons not making much of an impact. Then his junior year he opened up a can of whupass on the Big Ten. He was the ultimate tackling machine for 2 years. Never flashy or a "look-at-me" kind of guy. He flat out did not miss tackles. People may forget just how good he was for 2 years. Dude was a beast. I love him for that.

On the Patriots.  One of the few positons they lack depth, especially a run stopping thumper along side Hightower.  Still has gas in the tank.  Belichick loves these type of players and nobody is better at maximising strengths.  Oh yeah, what's the one thing Harris lacking, a ring.  Who better to get him that than the GOAT.
