New uniforms coming for 2015-16

So, as I said I would the other day, I emailed MDen to ask why there was the big jersey sale.

My original theory was that Adidas is transitioning Michigan over to actual Maize so they need to push the highlighter-numbered jerseys out for the actual Maize ones incoming.

I based this off of the 2015 gear featuring actual Maize as opposed to the Adidas highlighter style. Here is one of several examples

Well, that turned out not to be the case.

Response from MDen I just received

Here are the reasons for the jersey sale.

1.       We put stuff on sale all the time to move out old inventory to make room for new merchandise for 2015.  This year, basketball and Hockey are both getting new Uniforms so a few more styles to liquidate than most years.  This is nothing more complicated than that.

2.       It is also the case that for 2015 only 2 numbers will be available for Football jerseys - #1 and #4.  This also plays a role in our moving out old inventory of other numbers.

So there you have it. Those are the reasons for this massive jersey sale.

Basketball will be getting new uniforms by Adidas and Hockey will be getting their SIXTH different uniform in the last 6 years.

Highlighter looks aesthetically better on the football uniforms. At lest the helmets and uniforms will match this year; unlike last.

Only care that your avatar photo has the highlighter yellow.  When are you going to switch to Maize WD!  The people must know!

Interesting that only numbers 1 and 4 will be sold for football. I wonder if that is a prep for some of the big questions we have seen regarding profiting off of implicit player likeness (e.g., a #16 U-M FB jersey from 2009-12 seasons is really for one guy). #1 could be played off as generic, and #4 can be clearly linked to Harbaugh without harm. This way, no one can say U-M is profiting off a current player's likeness.

It probably has more to do with who is wearing the numbers.  Looking at the website, the other numbers are 12, 16, 21, 28, 47, 48, 77, and 98.  21, 47, 48, and 98 are probably scrapped due to the legacy program going away (even though Desmond Morgan is still wearing 48), the other numbers aren't being worn by a presumed starter (unless Malzone wins the job).  So MDen probably doesn't get enough sales to justify them right now.  21 is the only one that I would expect to stick around anyway.

I'd love to see the probation era basketball unis make a return. The nike style, post fab five era unis. The ones with the classic block M shorts with the patch on the front of th e waistband.

It would also be cool if they did the cazzie era tops with the fab five era shorts

If you want to sell jersey numbers that won't get caught up in the "profiting off of implicit player likeness" issue you could sell the Legends numbers, especially if the legends patch program is ending.  That way you could honor the legends and avoid litigation at the same time.

I still think it is incredibly lazy and ridiculous that major uniform manufacturers use templates for almost every school they produce uniforms for.

A certain fabric pattern, or design structure being used by multiple teams is ok. I can understand why Nike, Under Armour or adidas would want to use the same methods of production for all of the teams they equip, but when they use the same themes and designs for each team it becomes pretty pathetic.

There is marketing reasons behind some of it (Ex: adidas would naturally want to use the same font on all of their t-shirts, and use the same 3 stripes pattern, etc..), but when the actual uniforms for basketball are literally the exact same look for each team with nothing but color changes and maybe a custom font for the school name, it gets to the point where it is putting adidas in a negative light in my opinion. It gives me motivation to purchase original apperal instead of the same cookie cutter crap that they produce each season.

he is the most popular player in Michigan history this year. I guarantee you that will be the most popular number sold in a long time due to the Jim Harbaugh hire/love.
