New Top Group for Damien Harris (M and OSU)

Submitted by Jaqen H'ghar on

Figured this was noteworthy since some of us thought there was a good chance he would be one of our early commits for 2015. Apparently it might turn into a battle. Don't really understand how he can grow up a Michigan fan and put OSU in his top group, even after his visit. Those two thoughts just don't even coexist to me.

  1. It's official. Michigan and Ohio State are tied for first right now!

it is feasible if he isn't ever really exposed to people who care about the rivalry. If someone grew up a casual fan of auburn while living in Michigan, I guess I wouldn't be shocked if he considered Alabama when the time came. It's different being an active member of the rivalry

The kid is from Kentucky. Being a Michigan "fan" means he likes watching the team play, not that he has an unbreakable loyalty to the University like a lot of us have. He probably still ends up Blue, and a large portion of our recruits also consider OSU when they're recruited.

That's not what he's saying at all.  He's saying that most high schools kids (but especially those from outside of Michigan) who say they are fans, aren't fans in the same way most of us are.  They are fans in that they like to cheer for that team.  I cheered for Kentucky at that age because I though Jamal Mashburn was cool.  I probably couldn't have even told you who Kentucky's rivals were, let alone that I hated them.  I've not heard that Harris grew up in a big-time Michigan household, so it's likely his fandom is more "the team I like most" rather than a passionate thing.

That's not to say that you have to live in Michigan to be a huge M fan or that those who don't are automatically less of fans.  My kids will be bigger M fans than most kids in Michigan I bet, despite being 2500 miles away.

He is probably just trying to suck in some Buckeye fans and then "shock" them when he picks UM. He wants to be apart of the rivalry as a HS Junior.

all out there, the 2015 RB situation will be interesting. We should take two backs even with the low scholly numbers. Webber will be blue imo. Then it comes down to who pulls the trigger first between Harris and Patrick.

I am not worried ( I stopped worrying about recruiting a few years ago) but he was supposed to come to UM's camp this week but cancelled and then attended OSU's camp...and now lists OSU as a co-leader with UM.

It's possible that he is trolling OSU but it is also possible (no matter how much we might not like to admit it) that he is legitimately interested in OSU and he is no longer a UM "lock."

Again, I'm not worried at all, so please don't respond with any "Don't freak out, dude!" responses. I'll be forced to respond with, "Calmer than you, dude."

EDIT: Well, what a surprise! My post gets labeled "Trolling" because I don't pump constant sunshine and puppy dogs about our chances with this kid. God, this place can be really annoying.

If it makes you feel better, I didn't mark it trolling . I marked it as overrated, because of " I am not worried ( I stopped worrying about recruiting a few years ago.)" and "Again, I'm not worried at all, so please don't respond with any "Don't freak out, dude!" responses. I'll be forced to respond with, "Calmer than you, dude."

You're so worried.

No big deal.  He wants to play in a pro style offense.  Urban has never had a 1,000 yard rusher at RB.  UM has had great offensive line recruiting, while Ohio has not.  He grew up a Michigan fan.  We have Fred Jackson, they don't.

He just had a good visit and is still feeling the after glow.  After his next visit to Ann Arbor, we should be just fine.

my first reason for coming to this site was to follow recruiting, I sometimes think it's too much. For instance, I was looking through a class of 2013 recruiting update from about a year ago, and it was mentioning some 2014 guys that I haven't even heard of since. Obviously cycles for this are speeding up, but sometimes I think we just need to keep the focus on 2014, and not really think about 2015 until either someone from that class commits and/or this cycle is over, and just have some faith until then.

Whether he's a die-hard UM fan or a casual UM fan, it is in his best interest to look at all schools which might fit him, much like Kyle Kalis did.

He seems to like a lot of what we have to offer, but there is no reason not to see what is going on in Columbus. As much as Meyer is a spread guy, he does like physical running backs.  While we rightfully see a lot of the negatives in Meyer and his staff (Vrabel for the win!), dude has national championships and just went 12-0 (regardless of difficulty of schedule) in his first season.

As a die-hard UM fan, if I were being recruited, I would at least check out what OSU has to offer. Doubt I'd be swayed by Meyer and his trust tree, but to each his own.

Congratulations! You are officially a "Troll" on this board, now. Weren't you aware that it is impermissable to say anything other than "HOKE RULZ AWLLLL!!!!" without drawing the ire of the unwashed masses on MGoBlog?

Harris will not be an early commit. So far the pattern under Hoke is that the earliest kids bleed maize and blue, and recruit the others. (Morris, Dymonte, Ferns, Speight) So it seems to me that someone will sign up before him and he'll be convinced later.

Maybe Harris joins up in November after seeing OSU backs run for negative yards against our D.

In all seriousness, after I saw the OSU "core values" wall for the first time, that if any kid wants to go there over us then it's probably for the best anyway... Needing to post that value list in the locker room is such a turnoff...ASIC people need to be told them. I say this with a full heart.
