New Scoreboards: Not THAT Much Larger

Many of you may have already seen this as it was in a video sent out by the Alumni Association, but here is a visualization of how the new scoreboards will compare to the old:

I'm certainly not complaining, and I still can't wait to see these on Saturdays, but this definitely falls short of the size upgrade I think most of us had in mind.  If you'll recall, this is the size difference Brian suggested we'd see:

Old:

New:

Edit - Christ, you guys can be frustrating.  See the explicit note that I'm not upset nor disappointed about this -- I simply thought they were going to be larger.

I don't think the issue was with the actual scoreboard size, I think it had to do with the screen size.  There was some other crap on the old scoreboards and only half of it was a screen. I think the new ones will be all screen.

What is so difficult to understand? It is exactly like it was presented to everyone. The actual video screen is absolutely frickin huge. We just won't need all of the empty space around the screen for the scoreboard portion, as that will be below.

I remember the tiny scoreboard very well...

At least on these small scoreboards, it was easier to read...the score...unlike the 1998-2010 scoreboards.

Apparently, we were the first ever college to have electronic scoreboards and these must have been it.  Something I learned from NCAA Football 2003 for X-Box.

Half of the old scoreboard was the game info (time, score, time outs, yardage)

All of that now is video board.  While at any given moment, the game info will likely take up the left side, now ALL of the video board can be switched over to to make use of the HD video technology.

I really hope they keep the yardage counts, I loved the Bronx Cheer when Notre Dame finally cracked positive yardage in the 2007 game.

A bigger scoreboard would be cooler I guess. But on the North end, I think a bigger scoreboard would take away from the great views of Ann Arbor. Maybe on the South End a bigger scoreboard would have been more logical, but then THAT would take away from the symmetry. Just from completing this thought, I am seeing how any idea for the scoreboard would have pros and cons. That being said, I'm happy they are bigger and in HD and trust the people in charge make the decision with the most benefits. That is all.

Do a google image search for "old michigan scoreboard".

Case closed.  The video wasn't even half of the old screen, more like a third or a quarter.

sad fact: I had to go to the fifth result to find a picture of the scoreboard in which we were winning.

Edit: beaten to the punch by chunkums, but I'm leaving it because Penn State.

No... The new screens are 47' x 85'.  The entire assemblies are 108' x 62'. The new scoreboards are 40% larger than the old scoreboards. 108 x 62 * 60% = 64.8 x 37.2, so 65 x 38. Now, look at this photo:

You can plainly see that the scoreboards are 3x2 format, not modern widescreen, and less than half the total area. Say 3/8ths. So 3/8ths, or 37.5% of 65x38 = 25.5 x 14.25. Account for squareness and the old boards were 26x20 feet or so.

SO:

85x47 / 26x20. New boards are more than twice as long in one dimension and more than 3 in the other. This is over 6 times the viewing area. Not much bigger? Seriously?

not just ther part (all of it at some time, part at others) that is devoted to video replay. When you think about just the board size itself, while it is undoubtedly much larger than the old, I think the OP is right--I myself thought the total size of it would be larger and wider than this appears. After the upgrade and the new boxes at both ends of the stadium, the screens looked way too small, not just the video part, but the whole thing. This will be great and we'll all like it, but it doesn't appear to be as large as was discussed IMO.

He shouldn't be getting THIS hammered. Yes, the video will be way bigger, but the board size in filling and fitting in the open space between the two towers doesn't really make it look huge. But that's more room for more seats, I tell myself. But they could have gone a lot bigger.

The post above my first, brought me to another thought. How will all the game information (Score, time, yard totals, etc.) that dominated the old scoreboard fit into the slim side panels of the new scoreboards? I understand the screen will be bigger, but it's nice having that information ALWAYS in display.

I would have to imagine they would switch back and forth between displaying game stats and video replays (or maybe switching between those two and a third option with both video and stats on the board), I think it's important to remember that THE ENTIRE screens will be available for whateva use is needed.

Anyway, these renderings of a new scoreboard at Georgia's stadium give an idea of how the video screen might be used—in "stat" mode and "full replay" mode (minus the ads of course):

Whats with official mock-up of video boards using away game images?  Our official mockup was an away game, and this one is actually of a game at georgia tech's stadium (they wear white at home sometimes, and notice the Russell brand poster in the background) You would think they'd use real home images.
