New Rivals 100 is out

Submitted by Dr.Jay on

Not that I'm a "star whore" but by my count Michigan "should have" at the very least 2 5* players commited. Kris Frost and Dee Hart and we were very close to Sammy Watkins and he earned his 5th * FML. In happier news Lawrence Thomas lost a star

looked awful at the Under Armour game.

Hart and Frost are 19 and 20 respectively, Hayes is our only guy in the top 100.

Looks really good.  What are the chances that he plays next year?  We have a huge crop of RBs returning, but none of them has been anything close to a stand-out.  V. Smith is a good blocker, but lacks the size to do anything between the tackles and the speed to break outside.  Shaw has shown flashes, but not anything approaching consistent production.  Fitz is always injured (maybe that changes next year).  Hopkins has the size to be a Brandon Jacobs-esque between the tackles runner, so he is a potential regular contributor.  And RR apparently saw some issues with Cox and chose not to use him.

Don't want to post a new topic on this, but since you mentioned Hayes, curious as to where people see him fitting in next year.

will want to use him.  Rodriguez was going to use him as a slot wr, but who knows how we'll use slots now.

If Hayes is a running back, there's a fairly decent log jam there.  Can't imagine he'd get a ton of run as a freshman, but who knows.

I think Hopkins will play a major roll with the offense and Hayes will get a few carries here and there but with our depth it will be difficult for him to get a lot of carries early in the games.

If he is only going to get a gew carries, then I hope that they redshirt him.  This is one position where we have bodies to spare, and Hayes has the potential to be a big time RB at the next level, so if he is not going to be a big contributor, I would rather see him get a year of solid S&C, technique and practice, so that he can tear it up for the next 4 years.

I completely agree. If Hayes comes in and establishes himself as a front runner at RB for the team, then I would have no problem him playing. But if he is only going to run a little bit he needs to be RS because we have plenty of depth at RB.

I would be shocked if Hayes gets a single carry this year.  We have lots of depth at running back.  If he was Michael Dyer or Marcus Lattimore, that would be something else, but your typical 4-star running back is not going to get carries over 5 other 4-star guys who are in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th seasons.  I suspect the depth will look like:  Hopkins, Shaw, Smith, Cox, Toussaint, and I wouldn't be surprised to see any of them have a breakout year.

Dee won the MVP but it was on a reverse that was wide open.   I like Dee a lot and wish he stayed in this class, but during his other runs he reminded me of Vincent Smith.

Frost is a big loss IMO, if he gets playing WR out of his head he will be a very good LB.

This is surely sour grapes, but didn't he get run down by an LB?  I didn't see the electric moves I expected to.  One game sample - he may not have cared about that game at all -, but he didn't seem quite so dominant playing against that level of competition.

Sometimes it takes a few experiences like that to get a kid to think twice about what he wants versus what he really projects to be good at.

I hosted a kid last summer for the USA Baseball 18U team trials. His dad had been on him to play catcher, and he had the best measures for that position on his tournament team. He really wanted to pitch, declined the opportunity to catch early in the week, and got shellacked by the higher national level of batting. He didn't make the cut, but he did start catching at the other national events he played in during the summer.

It's hard when you the local or state top dog, to understand and realize you need to adjust to compete at the next level.

but didn't he only get to play 3 or 4 games this year because of a wrist injury?  Interesting that the recruiting sites remain so high on him.  I like it obviously.

How come the players that we pursue very hard  and were considered LOCKS (Frost, Hart) now move up and become 5-star's with a higher status and it seems like all of our solid commits are always dropping when the new rankings come out.

As does Michigan.  The madness of the past year or so has caused may to lose sight of this.  Next year will we will be back to where we were in recruiting; cleaning up in Mich and in on, and closing on, more than our fair share of 4 and 5*s.  Unfortunately, as discussed over and over here, it is a bit late to see that this year.

RR did a good job of getting kids interested in Michigan that otherwise probably would not have been, I am hoping the Hoke and his staff can do the same thing.  we have a lot to offer not only as a fantastic academic institution, but also as a great football school. I think Hoke will do a good job of selling the University as a whole and get us back to where we belong!

stop just stop ..... this depresses me. :(( wow this could have been a sick class, unless Hoke can pull something together this will be such a wasted recruiting class........Maybe we still get frost?

It seems like everytime I read that one of our guys has either de-committed or has started to look around, Brian Kelly is picking up another commit.  He has been killing it.  Of course it's not like Weis didn't do the same, but this still worries me.

As the poster noted, he wasn't being snarky.  ND is pathetic that literally no one has been called to account for a young man's death over two months later, not even a suspension, let alone a firing.  They apparently know enough to use the lift again, which contradicts what they said when it first happened (i.e., they wouldn't use the lift until the investigation is complete).

I don't care how many 5-stars Kelly gets or how good he can run the spread. He was in charge of a football practice where a young man died.  It was somebody's fault - and it definitely wasn't Declan Sullivan's.

I'm going to get into intent.  While you were, admirably, being charitable in your phrase, "just pray for his family", I think the poster was also doing something valuable - reminding people it wasn't an act of God that killed Declan Sullivan.  It was extremely likely that it was someone in charge of ND football who negligently was.

Unless ND's investigation somehow shows Brian Kelly is a) not in charge of where ND practices b) not in charge of when ND practices and c) ultimately not responsible for football personnel, he should be fired before next year. Yet it seems like many folks, includind ND recruits and those evaluating ND's class, have moved on and don't have any concern about this possibility.

So you can do both - pray for his family, and pray for justice (if you are so inclined for prayer).

Why didn't we grill Rich Rod for going over on practice time or having a couple extra coaches at summer camp? Probably because it wasn't even something he knew about or had any hand in. I'm sure Brian Kelly had no direct hand in putting employees in the sky that day, and I'm sure if he put two and two together he would have brought them down. But his mind was on his job, trying to execute a practice. Coaches can't control or be responsible for every facet of their practices operation.

RR was focused more on Florida.

But now with Hoke, I envision that Hoke v. Kelly on recruiting trail will be a major factor and rivalry.  I'd say Tressel too but I just don't know if we can break that Iron Curtain surrounding most of Ohio.

But Michigan and ND are very similar and with Hoke having good ties in Indiana and Illinois, it may be accentuated even more.
