New OL come this Saturday?

Submitted by Mr. Rager on

Be prepared based on Hoke's presser this afternoon.  Looks like Glasgow could shift down to C and they could be putting Bryant in at LG.  Hoke even went so far as to mention that Bosch would get a look at LG.

they did seriously consider playing Kalis last year. If Hoke mentioned him by name, I wouldn't completely write off the possibility of Bosch getting a chance to start this year. I think we've only had two true freshmen OL play in the last 20 years, so it's always a long shot regardless of the staff.

I'm not entirely sure a new OL is necessarily a good thing, would we be interrupting any important "gelling" that could be happening?

I have no idea when you soldier on and when you make a change.

I go back and forth on this, but the more I watch Miller get owned in 1 on 1 match-ups, the more I think this isn't a problem that more time fixes. The targeting/assignment issues are one thing (and will likely take a step back with a reshuffle), but at some point your center needs to have the physical ability to block someone. Akron and UConn are at the bottom end of the talent we'll face at NT and it's pretty plan for DC to see that lining up a guy heads up on Miller will blow up plays with regularity. Yes, we managed to win against Notre Dame, but that was really in spite of OL play; you can't expect Devin to play lights out like that to compensate every game.

The quote at the end of Angelique Chengelis' piece intrigued me the most. In response to a question about the chemistry of the offensive line and how important that is:

"So is production (important), and that might be more critical than chemistry," Hoke said. "We've got to put the guys in there who give us the best opportunity to be successful."

There are no actual changes on the published depth chart, which as we know is not the depth chart per se. If they are trying out numerous iterations of the line in practice, then I think this might open the door for some potential changes, if you will, but of course, we may never know until closer to the game. Hoke did say that they have some time yet to decide, which is true, but I wager this will be the focus of a fair amount of speculation this week.

This situation reminds me of (CSB, time) rowing in high school.  We had two varsity eights, 1 and 2 boats.  Both boats were getting the crap kicked out of them in the early races, and so finally, the coach took the top four port and top four starboard ergometer times and put them on first boat.  The stroke was new, and five out of the eight guys had not been in the seats they occupied (or even rowed together).  Boom - first boat killed everyone the rest of the season, and second boat did better as well.

Sometimes you just have to grind it out and let the details work themselves out.

and Hoke never suggested any position changes on the offensive line.  ?  In fact, he said he was going to wait until after Tuesday practice before making any decisions regarding changes.  I think folks are jumping to a lot of conclusions here.

Without any citations to the presser and no other reports Hoke said anything like this....it seems like a weak trolling attempt.

Everyone knows they are evaulating people there, but the names and positions are just conjecture on the OP's part.

Not true.  Here is a summary of what was said (from Rivals):

"One more day won't hurt to look on OL. And Darrell rotates them. We need better play at center, whether it's Graham with Joe Burzynski or Chris Bryant at the guard. "

"We're at the point where we want to make sure, so one more day isn't going to hurt us. Darrell [Funk] rotates those guys through pretty good during practice. You see a lot of the same groupings.

"We need a little better play from the center, whether it's Jack or Graham, then Chris Bryant or Joe Burzynski as the guard."

...so. Delete your comment?

The OP said that Bryant would be moving to guard, but the quote mentions Joey.  Hmmm.  And, it states that Miller and Glasgow have both been working at center, which we know they have been doing all year.

If you are jumping to conclusions, fine, but don't make it sound like Hoke tipped his hat one way or another about a possible mix-up.  He didn't.  We knew everything he said already.

I am struggling to find what I misrepresented in my original post, based on the quotes provided and the summary I listed from Rivals.

Also, there is a "?" at the end of the subject line and this is a pretty 'hot' topic amongst Michigan fans these days.

Quit grasping for straws, asshole.

Please use threads to bring insight or add information that others may not know.

Imagine someone starting a thread that said "Jake Ryan to return?" and then the thread just re-hashes that he will return at some point.

Plus, you made it sound informative by saying Bryant is the candidate to move to guard, but Hoke's quote does not say that.

Of course ther is a possible shift in the OL this week.  it has been discussed on the front page numerous times.  If you want to start a thread to share ideas about it, fine, then premise it as such....just don't make it seem like Hoke indicatedsomething specfici in his presser (like a line of Lewan, Bryant, Glasgow, Kalis, Schofield).  He didn't.

I'm not sure why you are so worked up about this.  Not everyone has the time to read 100% of the front-page articles, especially now, during football season, when they come and go quickly.  I think it's a noteworthy topic.

Hoke is usually very coy.  I found the fact that he was willing to specifically address the situation and drop a name or two or three to be interesting indeed.  I appreciate Rager bringing it to my attention, as it gives me some insight I didn't have a few minutes ago.

Hoke, for the first time I can remember this year, explicitly mentioned the need to improve a specific position, and talked about a potential shift in the lineup. And named names.

Slap bet commissioner rules: thread is valid.
