New ND Defensive Coordinator

Submitted by TheBigAC on
I am an alumni of Grand Valley State University and was down in Alabama today to watch the National Championship game. After the team lost there was a banquet at a local gym to celebrate the team. While there I talked to some friends who happen to work in the Athletic Department. According to my friends Martin to ND as Kelly's Defensive Coordinator is almost a done deal and an announcement could come as early as Sunday afternoon. Martin was very emotional during his banquet speech and one friend believed that his pending departure was one of the reasons. Just thought it was interesting.

I negged you on the D2 Champ Game thread because you made a slanted post against D2 teams and their supposed lack of execution. I submit that the top D2 teams execute as well as the top D1 teams. They don't have the same athletes, I will agree, but I didn't appreciate the snarky post regarding D2 teams.

I could care less if someone actually negs me, and on most occasions it makes me smile for a moment or two. But in the particular post you're talking about I was quite literally asking whether the D2 teams played as sloppy as they were playing because as I said I don't see very many of them. It was a simple question, I got a valuable response and that was all there was to it. No Slant, no agenda

They survived when Kelly left, and will survive if Martin leaves. The program is now in such good shape that a coach would almost have to try to fuck it up to actually fuck it up.

I talked to a past GV Athletic Director who made the point that stability in the coaching staff is one of the biggest keys to success at the D2 level because it is much harder to sustain that name brand recognition that helps lead to success. Even after the past two seasons Michigan still has a great brand name to sell. If GV had a similar free fall their name recognition would drop off much more because they are smaller to start. One of the big questions is, if Martin does indeed leave, what happens to the coaching staff then? There has been significant turnover in the assistant coaches on the team and this could be what breaks the continuity and success that GV has experienced over the past decade. Obviously I am hoping that is not the case, but it does create some worry.

I am an alumni of Grand Valley State University This isn't at the top of my list, but still... Alumni is plural. Unless you suffer from multiple-personality disorder, you are unlikely to be "an alumni." If you are a male graduate, you are an alumnus. If you are a female graduate, you are are an alumna.
