New MMB Drum Major
After pre-auditions, the finals came down to two candidates: Jeffrey McMahon and Nathan Magyar.
Jeff served as Rank Leader for two years as a member of the horn section. Nathan has been a feature twirler for three years. Both were remarkably worthy candidates.
Today at their spring meeting, the MM elected their new Drum Major to be Jeffrey McMahon. Congratulations to him and Nathan on a job well done! They are among the most outstanding individuals in their unfailing loyalty, dedication, and commitment to excellence and to this university. Next season should be as great as ever, and hopefully better than ever so far.
Again, a note of thanks to David Hines, Jr. for his wonderful service to the band and the university community over the past two years. We are fortunate to have such outstanding people among our ranks.
Go Blue!
Im sure this is a dream come true for him.

To hijack the thread: Nice avatar!
Congrats to Mr. McMahon!
I think i speak for many superstitious mgopeople when I say that I look forward to a season full of back-bends completed and goalpost baton tosses successfully executed. We all know that Saturday rarely ends well if the drum major is having an off day.

You mean a few inches lower with his head touching the ground. Anything less doesn't fit with the resurgent Michigan tradition.

MANNBAND!!!
Best of luck to David Hines, Jr.
PS... It was a good post, not sure why you were negged.

I know you're joking (or I hope you are), but I doubt Nathan frequents MGoBlog, and I further doubt that he would neg it....

Why do you doubt that he frequents mgoblog?

Good question...just my feeling, I guess.
but have you seen him in his crushed velor twirler's jumpsuit, complete with gold lightning bolts?

With that said, I was pulling for Nathan to get the job - my son and I always look for Nathan during the pre-game march.

I think this is his audition video from LAST year (2010):

Looks good to me!

Good find! Yep, this is the twirling portion of his audition from last year. Here's Nathan's from last year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bM-nPmIrvbs
Of course, there is more to Drum Major auditions than twirling, but these are the most exciting and accessible parts of the audition to many folks. :)

What a badass, check out his trick at 2:02, you won't regret it

He's good...

This is how you play a clarinet.
I helped teach him that! That's my special moment for the day.
But I've seen first hand the kind of work he has put in over the last three years, and coupled with the competition he's been up against, we're in for a real treat this fall.

...that the backbend should not be an issue.

His backbend this year is even more impressive!

Awesome and congrats to Jeff. He lived in my hall last year and I'm sure he will do a hell of a job.

I would rather hear about the womens' water polo team.

I'll always remember the name "David Hines Jr" because he's in my videos of games I want to remember forever, like UConn 2010. Now Jeff is going to be in future youtube videos of pre-games and whatnot. This is an important part of tradition from the fans stand point. Congrats to him.
Beavis, you either need a stonger brand of weed or quit all together.

Ahhhh! Nathan is always so good with twirling. I was pulling for him. But since I know nothing about the other guy other than what was posted here, I guess I can't comment on who deserved it more. I'm sure Nathan will keep tearing it up on the baton as always though!

Gayest thing I have ever read on MGoBlog.

Congrats to both on their hard work. Looking forward to watching the best band in the country again next year. Please do another video game theme haha.
Screw that BDBITL crap...if your signature formation (and possibly signature football custom) were invented by your biggest rival, you ain't nothing but trick-ass hoes.

Nathan went to my high school, and if Jeff managed to beat him, he is well deserving of the position. Congrats to both for their efforts!

Just out of curiosity, has a girl ever been the drum major at UM or is that not possible? Just asking to ask.
Karen England was the drum major of the Michigan Marching Band. As her name implies, she was a woman, so yes, it's possible. She was the first and so far only female DM of the MMB.

Who would have thought that both of the guys who like piped in music frequent MGoBlog.
Huge shoes to fill, DHines is quite literally one of the hardest-working, most genuinely nice people you'll ever meet. One of those people that's as good a leader on the field as he is off of it. I was proud to know him each time he took the field with the MMB.
Good luck to Jeff!
I was angry at him for skipping our beer league playoff hockey games at the Ice Cube to prep for this, but apparently it was worth it. Congrats Jeff!
He's a darn good defenseman too
