New Jabrill Peppers USA Today blog post. On Hand and Fournette: "I'm bringing both of them"

Jabrill Peppers added a blog entry.  Amongst some other things he talked about recruiting.  Specifically, him recruiting Da'Shawn Hand and Leonard Fournette.

I talk to Leonard Fournette and DaShawn Hand a lot about coming to Michigan.

First, with Leonard I'm trying to stress to him the importance of us having Derrick Green. Derrick is one of the best young running backs in the country and with him taking reps along with Leonard they could be the best 1-2 punch in the country.

The best part is that it would preserve him more because he's not gonna have to take on the whole load by himself. He'll get a blow and we won't lose productivity on the field. Getting those breaks will allow him to have a longer career than most running backs.

It's a win-win. Plus Leonard really understands how big a Michigan degree would be for him so I feel good about him.

Then with DaShawn, I always tell him that we can make each other better. We can really feed off of each other because we're both playing on defense. We'll put the clamps on the receivers and he'll pressure the quarterback. It's the perfect compliment with both of us on the field at the same time.

They're both really cool dudes and really serious about their academics first. That's what I love about them. They're obviously really talented and whatever they decide to do they've got a fan in me, but hopefully they'll come join Team 135 and we can all start our legacies together and bring Michigan back where I know it's supposed to be.

Do I think I can bring them with me? Well, I'm a really confident person so I feel pretty good about it. Definitely about DaShawn because of our relationship and the type of defense that we run. Leonard will be a little tougher, but they call me the commissioner so I'm gonna put it out there right here on my blog: I'm bringing both of them.

Really like him. Academics

Really like him. Academics seem to be a priority, he's really well spoken (not just "athlete" articulate, but his writing is comparable to most paid bloggers). Good pick up athletically, academically, and as a person.

Haha, can't help but laugh, since I highly doubt we'll get both Fournette and Hand, but the kid has a ton of confidence. I love it!

Right now I'd be happy with

Right now I'd be happy with just DaShawn Hand.

Obviously getting both would be Tremendous, but I'm less worried about the OMG NEED of Leonard Fournette because of Derrick Green and Deveon Smith. As long as Fournette goes anywhere besides Alabama, I can live with that.

He's already dating Kate

He's already dating Kate Upton, it's just that he wanted her to keep it on the down low because Leo Fournette thinks he's got a shot and he doesn't want to crush his dreams until he's signed a LOI.

I really don't get the defeatist attitude on here.  I don't consider myself an overly optimistic guy, but Fournette seems like the anti-Westphal (or Treadwell, et al).  He's been an SEC lean forever, and has yet to pull the trigger.  I think he's looking for a reason not to go to LSU.  I also see us having a huge upside for top tier talent.  Judging by recruiting, we will be a top 3-5 team in talent when he is an upperclassmen.  We still have to produce on the field, but Michigan is a far more lucrative place to play than it has been in a long time.

I really don't get the defeatist attitude on here.

Saying that we have no chance with Fournette and that the coaches should stop recruiting him would be defeatist. Simply saying that the chances of getting him out of the south are very slim is something that virtually every recruiting analyst says about Fournette, including Sam Webb, one of the most intrinsically optimistic guys I've ever known. I think it's unlikely he'll get out of the south, but that doesn't mean that I think Hoke & Co. should stop recruiting him. If we can get him up here for an official visit, anything is theoretically possible, regardless of the odds.

And our opinions—whether "defeatist" or realist or loony—don't matter to the coaches or players anyhow, thank god.

Things Change

>I think he's looking for a reason not to go to LSU.

Like Laquon Treadwell was looking for a reason to not go to UM? I know it is different, but there is no risk in seeing if he likes it here.

Team 135

Wait, arguably the best three players in the country coming to Michigan?  I will not allow myself to believe this.  That way I can avoid disappointment if it doesn't happen, and be shocked and overjoyed if it does.

I love Peppers' attitude, and he'll need that swag if he's going to have any chance of winning the Heisman as a true freshman.

Loving the swagger. Loving

Loving the swagger. Loving the confidence. Getting Fournette on campus would be big, as we all know anything can happen once a kid gets in front of Hoke and the rest of the staff. However, I still will not get my hopes up about either Fournette or Hand until NSD comes and both of their names on inked on a dotted line and sent into Schembechler Hall. And as far as I'm concerned, Fournette is a lock to Alabama or LSU until he specifically comes out and says otherwise.

If we just got one of these guys, I'd be happy. And even if we got neither of them, we'll still have reeled in a pretty darn good class. Top-10 anyway. I have no problem with Jabrill Peppers, the #2 recruit in America, being our class headliner.

I'm not saying you're wrong...

I'm not saying you're wrong to keep your hopes in check, but he has come out and specifically said that he has no leader and all the talk about him being a lock to one of the SEC schools is just that...talk that never came from him.

Again, I'm not saying that means he's coming here or isn't going to end up in the south, but you said "until he specifically comes out and  says otherwise" so I just thought I'd let you in on that.

Peppers, Ferns, Speight,

Peppers, Ferns, Speight, Morris... these kids are committing and then putting Michigan first and their personal agendas second   (I'm sure the other recruits are too, but these guys are putting out there for all to see).

This team first mentality is amazing.

Some USC or Miami running back can have his 1400 yards rushing and his 8-4 record... Green and Fournette can have 850 yards a piece and a ring.

850?

Alabama just had one back rush for 1300 yards and another rush for 1100 yards on their way to winning a ring.  If you build a dominant line, getting 2 guys over 1000 yards isn't a pipe dream.

true story

http://www.rolltide.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2012-2013/teamcume.html#TEAM.IND

It's absolutely amazing the productivity they got out of Lacy (1360 yds, 6.5 avg, 17 TD) and Yeldon (1131 yds, 6.3 avg, 12 TD).  And they had another kid (Kenyon Drake) rush for 285 yds, 6.7 ypc, and 5 TD.  Their top 4 rushers all averaged over 6ypc, which is staggering.

Backfield Duos

i realize neither Green nor Fournette have played a snap of college ball.  But the combo I think about with these guys is USC's team with Reggie Bush & LenDale White, or maybe Borges' Auburn team that had Ronnie Brown & Cadillac Williams.

Unreal

As a junior in 2005, LenDale White rushed for 1,302 yards, 6.6 ypc, and 24 TD.  As the 2nd string guy behind a dude who won the Heisman (1,740, 8.7 ypc, 16 TD).  They combined for just under 700 receiving yards and 4 more TD through the air as well.  And Bush ran back kicks and punts.

I don't think you'll find a better backfield, or offense, in CFB history.

Backfield combinations

I was a little kid at the time, and it was before college football games were televised nationally on a regular basis, but the one I always wished I could have seen was the OK State team with Barry Sanders & Thurman Thomas.  I think they ran the wishbone.  That must have been something.

OK State

Nope, they ran the I-formation with a feature back.  Sanders got only 105 carries the season before he won the Heisman (compared to Thomas's 251 carries).  I remember reading an anecdote about an opposing defensive coordinator telling his team not to hurt Thomas, because then OK State would bring in Sanders.

Not better, but close

Was the Arkansas backfield of Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis.

2006: McFadden (1647, 5.8ypc, 14 TD), Jones (1168, 7.6ypc, 6 TD)

2007: McFadden (1830, 5.6ypc, 16 TD), Jones (1162, 8.7ypc, 11 TD), Hillis (347, 5.6ypc, 2 TD / 537 receiving, 11ypc, 5 TD)

Of course, McFadden as a freshman in 2005 also went for over 1000 yards rushing, with 11 TD and 6.3 ypc.

The Auburn duo were solid, but not on the level production-wise of the kids from USC, Alabama, and Arkansas.

2004: Williams (1165, 4.9ypc, 12 TD) and Brown (913, 6.0ypc, 8 TD)

do other teams recruits do this?

I obviously only follow MI football, but the active and productive role of the recent recruits in at least garnering serious looks at our programs from top seeds seems unusual (and successful).  Obviously Morris was a superstar and this and then Ferns has taken it another step with the Team 135 t-shirts.  Are the top 10-20 recruits getting this kind of attention from recruits at all the schools they are considering?  or our the UM guys just particularly awesome, having bought right into "The Team, The Team, The Team" mantra early?

Liked That Line As Well...

That line grabbed me as well. Peppers seems like a very mature and gracious individual as it is, and it will be very exciting to see what he will become as a player and a person in Ann Arbor.

What I really like about how the class of 2014 has been working in particular is that they've taken the passion for Michigan that the staff seems to inspire and tried to take that message on the road, as it were, with success to boot. Part of that might be how social media has changed the process, but I think quite a bit of it is being able to make Michigan a place where kids such as Peppers want to be and feel at home somehow.

He sure knows how to sell. I figured the top RB in this class would not want to split time for his career, rather just split his first year or two and have more snaps in year 2 or 3... the perspective that Peppers has is incredible. He totally sold me, that is if I were a 4/5 star HS RB.

Well, it's

similar reasoning in a way to leaving early to go to the NFL. You only get so many hits in your life, and there is a definite downside  to doing them while not getting paid. So, the fewer hits you take in college, it theoretically extends your NFL career too.

I think it's the family atmosphere

I know we hear the phrase all the time of Michigan feeling like a family, but I really get the feeling our players and committs really want to return Michigan to glory and want our coaches and just the team as a whole to be successful more than some other programs.  Sometimes I get the sense athletes want to succeed for more selfish reasons, but I get the feeling our guys really appreciate each other and desperately want to see everyone be successful, not just themselves.

Sounds like a good question

Sounds like a good question for the former Michigan player guest speaker at the next MGoBlog Sports Power Weekend.

It's possible that recruits have always done recruiting on their own, but I'm guessing that the proliferation of summer camps coupled with the ubiquitousness of social media and the prestige given to recruiting class rankings are what is really behind this phenomenon.

I, for one,

Am not about to start doubting you, Commissioner Peppers. bring them both to ann arbor, win those state track records, then start as a freshman.

Stopping short of rabacking it, but I've caught his confidence.

I absolutely love the way JP thinks

He's focussed on a goal.  He's confident,  He thinks big.  He shoots for the best.  Great qualities of a Michigan Man.  I thought Ferns was a great recruiter.  But he may have met his match with young Mr. Peppers.  The rest of this recruiting year should be interesting to say the least.

What I love about Peppers

Is not just his confidence, but they way he manages to be so confident without any hint of arrogance. You get the feeling that he'll not only try to be the best he can be, but to encourage those around him to be the best they can be too.

Awesome.

My first impression reading

My first impression reading that was being blown away by the writing style.  I'm sure he had some help editing it, but compared to what you see called "essays" some of the D1 football players, that was a million times better and he's not even a senior in HS.

This kid gets it..

And if he keeps making this much sense im not going to be able to refer to him as a kid much longer. Cannot wait for this kid to enroll and get on campus. Brady Hoke found a gem here and the fact they he landed this kid speaks volumes to where this program is going. Go Blue and Go Jabrill!

Meh.

If he was a REAL recruiter, he'd already be lining up 5-stars for the 2015 class. I mean, 2014 is SO next year. /s

You just can't say enough about this guy....

I can (barely) remember what it was like to be 17. I remember that most often the things on my mind where girls, partying and playing sports and anything else was lucky to get a second thought.

This guy is incredible to me, how focused he is on things that matter in life like his education and what could be his professional football career. Already trying to acclimate to what it will be like in University and trying to help his future team on the recruiting trail as well. I honestly get the sense that he belives he can do anything he puts his mind to, and he's is quickly making a believer out of me as well.

how focused he is on...his professional football career

If I'd had almost a sure-thing lucrative professional career ahead of me, I probably would have been far more focused too...

Aw, who'm I kidding—girls and partying would still have been my focus.
