Kinda liked IU's helmets. Not this one, but I always thought they had probably the second best helmets in the Big Ten.
you've been paying too much attention to BTN polls
I'm sure you're a guy who voted that Iowa had the best helmets in the league too, right?
No doubt, look at that avatar; gotta be Ricky "America, love it or leave it!" Stanzi.
I always remember the disaster that was Cam Cameron....
What was he thinking?
will appear again in 15 years with the picture of the new helmets.
I always remember the disaster that was the glitter explosion helmets
What were they thinking?
...but they did come on in the era where EVERYONE was changing their jerseys. Especially in pro sports.
Needs more chrome.
a players lies on the floor in disguest. lol

In the video other players seemed pretty excited. It seems like players always like new uniforms even if they look terrible.
IU clearly wanted to make this a PR event. Whether they're actually excited or not, I would bet that they were instructed to react that way.
Threw-up in my mouth.
Where else would you throw up?
Don't wanna know.
These are obviously special edition helmets to be worn during their much anticipated Prime Time Nationally Televised game, at 9:30pm, on Thursday, at UTEP.
Definitely a made for TV event, right up there with "Who Shot JR" and the MASH finale.
Indiana has a football team?
It's a new thing they're trying
candy canes.....
In the increasing world of uniformz armz races, Indiana has leapt into the lead group...for whatever that's worth
If by jumping into the lead group of an arms race, you mean putting forth an effort like so
then yes, I agree. Completely.
For the non airplane dorks:
This is the Iranian Qaher 313: Iran's "stealth" fighter.
Apparently, per weapons engineers, the flight controls displayed are similar to that of old prop planes, the air intakes are too small for the engines, and the designs are ripped off from older, unsuccesful US stealth designs. And there are no pictures of this thing landing and taking off, thus calling into question it's viability as a fighter.
An 'advance' for a rogue country that isn't up to par with the latest (F22) or near-latest (F15E/SE, Eurofighter, F18 Superhornet) and greatest.
appears to be Ayatollah-powered, judging by where the extension cord is leading to.
Good luck cramming your Ayatollah mullah beard into the helmet.
Looks like an ornament from the tree.
All I really have to say to that helmet is "Yikes!", but on a possibly related note, it does raise the possibility of Indiana changing its fight song to something along the lines of this old favorite:
Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew
Cover it with chocolate, and a miracle or two
The Hoosier man, oh the Hoosier man can....
Haha... holy mother of pearl. I think that this is the B1G trying to create an artificial rivalry between IU and Maryland, via poor helmet choices.
Put it this way. Indiana is expanding the basketball candy-striped warmup pants to sports other than men's basketball. This is a fun way to do it for football without actually putting the team in candy-striped pants. Which would be dreadful.
I dont hate the helmet, I hate the chrome. If they were white stripes (OMG think of the marketing!!!), then I dont think I would mind one bit.
This is actually a great attempt to recognize a design element (the candy-cane stripes) that is a long-standing tradition, sort of like Northwestern did with their jersey stripes. But silver isn't a school color, and seeing a silver lid over a red uniform makes them look too much like Ohio.
What is the point of making a bunch of different helmets? Fans don't buy helmets.
it's Indiana's last-ditch effort for a middling-B1G team to retain any midwest talent outside of Michigan and OSU. If someone doesn't step up, soon it won't be the Big 2 and the Little 10/12. It'll be the Big 2 and the MAC
You may or may not buy into this conclusion the MGoBoard seems to have adopted, but I'm going to use this point to launch this off: I think we've really overrated the whole "uniforms gets the recruits" meme here. Really the only place that has seen correlation between having better teams and having a ton of alternate uniforms is Oregon. But, as it turns out, that also correlates with gobs of Nike money going to facilities, including a player's lounge with 50 some odd TV's and games to boot among many other things.
The only reason Michigan and Adidas pump out a bunch of alternate uniforms is because people buy these alternate uniforms. I seem to run into more UTL jerseys than standard jerseys at Michigan Stadium ever since that game took place.
I don't think that there are many here that would seriously argue that uniformz really help our recruiting (or anyone elses). Four star guys aren't tripping over themselves to play in blackout uniforms at USF nor do Alabama or USC need to do a thing to get recruits
I think most of us begrudingly tolerate them because players seem to think they're cool
I'm not buying it. Until I actually see one on the field, I am firmly believing that this is just the latest mockup from BHGP. Because seriously, who would come up with something like that and be serious about it?
The OSU camo helmet? Never underestimate the bad taste of the people who design these things.
Two words: Pontiac Aztec
IU released 5 helmets today not just that chrome one. I have talked to my friends on the IU football team and they love all the helmets so I'm sure they will help with recruiting. I like them too. I mean what does IU have to lose with a few wild helmets?
I like it
I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Let's summarize:
(1) The football team has no tradition to speak of (sorry, Anthony Thompson).
(2) The basketball team is a blue-blood, Mount Rushmore-caliber program.
(3) One of the basketball team's most conspicuous traditions is their candy-striped warmup pants.
Why not leverage the basketball tradition on the football side? I think the candy-striped chrome helmets are cool, and it's not like they're bastardizing any major football traditions by doing it.
Heck, I'd go further and use the candy-stripe feature more widely, perhaps with UTL-style jerseys. Do something creative like Northwestern did with their jerseys (leveraging the "Northwestern stripe").
Hmm:
Although I must admit that an IU alum already made your pitch a year and half ago:
Although the jersey can only have stripes on the sleeve, I can't find any mention in the NCAA rules book that the players even have to wear pants, let alone what colors or patterns they can or can't be.
Meh, what does Indiana really have to lose by doing this? Their football team's only longstanding tradition is losing, and in all likelihood, 99.9% percent of that campus just views football as a way to pass the time until basketball season starts. Or it just flat out might not give one crap about its football team whether it wins or loses.
Might as well try to do something, anything really, that will get your fan base excited about something other than basketball. Alternate helmets and uni's seem to work pretty well at other campuses, and it excites recruits. Might work at Indiana.
mmmmMMM Christmas time candy cane MMmmm....
the players "loved" the candy-cane chrome striped monstrosity. "Oh my goodness" is not usually a positive reaction. In the video it looked like they were stunned, like "are we being punked?" "Is Aston Kutcher going to pop out now?'
IMO Indiana has jumped into the lead for "stupidest looking helmet in football". I'm sure they won't hold the title for long, as that seems to be a title eveyrone is desperate to hold.
At least they now have a helmet that matches the inepitude of their product on the field.
David Brandon is on the phone with the chrome-plating factory as we speak. Nobody is going to get ahead of Michigan in this shiny department.
Looking at the helmets they showed in that video the first and last one are horenduous, spelled wrong, and the rest i think look pretty good. The chrome and the one with diffrent logos on each side are so ugly, it doesnt even make sense.
the "candy stripe" is something of an Indiana thing
What the hell ever happened to tradition?
What tradition does Indiana have other than losing?
Time to shake things up, if you ask me.
is living in some kind of dreamland in which new helmets translate to wins or something.
I'm on an iPhone but I trust that this has received at least +5. Well done good sir.
I think that is the worst looking helmet I've ever seen! With taht said I think it's a good move for IU. Nobody ever talks abount Indiana football - but those helmets will get them talking.
I have a 12 year old son and he thinks the Maryland uniforms are cool. He was actually excited to hear that Maryland joined the B1G as that meant he would get to watch Maryland play. I'm sure there will be some kids out there that will have a similar reaction to the IU helmet
Looks like Imperial Japan flag. Maybe IU's symbol for their season: kamikaze.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Tinsel, candy-cane stripes....
When did college football become dress-up?
Of buying fireworks in Indiana.
the really bad one. They can't wear that. That looks literally like a middle school football team helmet, not high school, middle school.
As for the rest of them, whatever. The usual mixture of kind of cool-kind of stupid. I am not one who minds all the uniform shit as much as most people though. Sometimes shaking things up can be alright. They need something to make football.... something in Indiana, so whatever.
"Pissed myself" because your comment is friggin hilarious!
I too pissed myself thinking of the Krazy Kaplan's Fireworks bilboards along I-94 and I-80!
First thing that comes to my mind after I see that is Hanky the Christmas Poo.
There is a marketing term for when you can tell a trend has reached its pinnacle when something so gaudy and ridiculous is released it seems like a parody of itself. Indiana has brought the whole helmet things to that point. However all I find myself doing is feeling ashamed that I can't actually remember the term.
The Shark?
Finish 4th in BIG10 scoring, 2nd in total offense, 1st in passing offense (by huge 400 yrd margin), 2nd in first downs.
In the unlikely event that Indiana would ever learn to play even a "middle-class" level of defense in the league, like they did when Bill Mallory was coach there many years ago, they'd be goddamned scary. I think Kevin Wilson is a good coach.
Also, former Michigan DB Doug Mallory is the Hoosier DC right now (brother of Curt). Doug Mallory did a decent job coaching for team defenses at Maryland, OK State and LSU.
I feel like the sun reflection off of the face mask would get in the players eyes. I don't think I'd like being able to see a reflection of myself in my face mask
These helmets are nice............for me to poop on.
I love how they cannot even hide an extension cord that probably rotates the base it is on, but the plane would be invisible to radar.
Also, if the chrome candy cane version were out, it probably would have won the helmet poll, if you took out the power of MGOBLOG. Yeah I know, a lot of ifs, and run on sentences.
Chrome face mask may be a little much.
out of Christmas wrap leftovers?
Put two of the chrome helmets next to each other, you can see "infinity" from the mutual reflection. Look hard enough, you can see two parallel lines meet, and you can even see the last time Indiana won a significant football game.
of new gaudy helmets is like Rosie O'Donnell getting a blonde wig, wearing nothing but saran wrap, stuffing her feet into black patent leather high heels, and expecting to be the next Bond girl.
Yes I agree. Completely.
IU fans are plenty excited about football. They just root for Notre Dame.
If that had been red and white it still would have looked awful, but at least it would have been in the actual school colors.
IU showed up in Ann Arbor wearing all-white with red helmets. Except the white uni's looked Cream colored. They looked like someone accidently washed them with the crimson uniforms.
fitting, because Michigan creamed them that day
I can't hear over that helmet.
Terrible, best word I could come up with.
Sam Wyche was a brainiac.
Always felt bad for Steve Bradley and Cam Cameron for having to wear such duds, but whatever.
I actually dig those helmets. The slanting on the IU makes it look a little aggressive.
The stripey-chromey one looks like a lovely Christmas tree ornament.
and IU could hook up and wear the all chrome look for their annual rivalry game. Call it Christmas in October
I like the one with the state flag logo on the side
In that they are also football helmets.
for the point in time that everyone else looks so stupid and gaudy that Oregon decides to shock the world by wearing something that looks rather normal and traditional.
this one is positvely briliant
Well they need to revamp it if they want to make another run at the BTN helmet challenge next year.
Congratulations! I'm pretty sure the red stripes on the helmet means that dude is pregnant.
The chrome helmet, and the helmet with the state flag on one side and the IU on the other side are absolutely brutal. But the other helmets are pretty good looking. The helmet with the block I is very old school looking, I like that one.
Those helmets are so reflective - could they blind opponents at the line of scrimmage?
to honor Lee Corso - 1973-1982.
Nope. Another opportunity missed it seems.
Yes stupid, because I don't like them. My lawn? Get off!
I would rather play a game with a larval-stage Alien sucking on my face and inserting a chest tube down my throat than wear one of those stripey-chromey disasters. And I'd rather wear an upside-down fishbowl filled with live shrews than put on the firework thing.
Delicious. No homo
Is that Adidas will tarnish the winged helmet with that bright chrome that the ducks and now Indiana wear.
Does Adidas have say over our helmets? I know they're not Adidas brand...
Not sure.... But between Adidas and DB anything is possible
Just got new helmets it appears
Feel free to call me crazy ... but I kinda like them and am interested in seeing what they will look like on the entire team at game day. Sometimes helmets and jerseys look a bit different close up than they do when viewing the whole team.
And speaking on IU football ... again call me crazy ... but I could see them taking a bit step forward this year. One of the best offensive minds in the country is on the sideline for the third year and has ran off the troublemakers and lazy members of the team while bringing in better talent. Not that they're going to be a Big 10 contender or anything but I could see them having a solid season.
You're crazy!
I've never seen stupider helmets in my life
I don't understand this trend. Alternate uniforms can mean more jersey sales, but what is an alternate helmet going to do? You can't go to Dick's Sporting Goods and buy the IU football helmet.
