What do we all think? I'm personally a fan.
Edit: Here is a full version in Blue
just an alternate? Our jerseys MUST say Michigan. I have always thought the "Spartans" on Staee's jerseys looks terrible. If this is a proposed permanent jersey I will be upset.
I agree to a certain extent. The football jerseys should never have "Michigan" or "Wolverines" across the top front, but with basketball jerseys, it doesn't bother me as much. I'd prefer them to just say "MICHIGAN" but it won't bother me that much if they say "Wolverines." They can wear hot pink for all I care so long as they win.
Their whites that just said 'state' in script we're pretty fly. Not sure if there's a good Michigan equivalent though.
I did like those.
Why MUST they say Michigan?
I know I know this is Michigan fergodsakes. But really.
Our jerseys SHOULD say Michigan.
Look, I know we are the Wolverines. Fine, OK. We don't have a mascot, the wolverine does not feature prominently in any of Michigan gear, it has never been a big part of the program's identity. Victors would actually make more sense on the front of our jerseys than Wolverines.
No victors would've been pretty dumb
why would they put No Victors on the front of the jersey? That would be completely assinine.
You're a big idiot.
I definitely prefer "Michigan" on the jerseys to "Wolverines," but "Victors" would be worse still.
"Victors" would make little sense to anyone who isn't a Michigan fan, and even some of our fans would have to stop and think for a second. (And if we lost a game while wearing "Victors" jerseys, we'd never hear the end of it.)
Think you are underestimating the impact and recognizability of the victors on a national scope. Maybe it should not be on the jerseys but there would be few in the country who would not understand it.
I like the Spartans ones also.
I am not sure if I would prefer Michigan instead of Wolverines or if I am just so used to seeing Michigan I am biased. Compared to other Adidas jerseys they don't look half bad. Hopefully they don't tear like last year.
It's strange how some have the school name (Louisville, UCLA, Kansas) while others have the mascots (Wolverines, Badgers, Bearcats)
Especially after last year's mess (Michigan never even wore last year's adidas alternate). Some schools probably preferred having their name on the chest versus their nickname.
I'm almost positive they wore the blue alternates at least once last year. Perhaps during the B1G tournament? I don't think they had long sleeves though.
We all HATED the maize, but we wore the blue...I think against PSU in the tournament.
We only wore the blue because the regular blue road unis were shelved after the jersey-tear disaster at Minnesota. After that game they wore maize as much as possible, and rotated through other uniforms (including year-old versions) when blue was vital.
We wore the zubazz blues against Wisconsin in the B1G tourney and we played like crap. We did not wear the sleeves and we did not see those jerseys after that. I really liked the shorts b/c the block M on them was HUGE!
I'd rather have the maize out ones.
Yea, those were so sharp. Wonder why we haven't used them since 2012-2013? They definitely were the coolest alternates we have worn recently both in football and basketball.
You mean the ones where you couldn't tell who was who except by skin color?
However if one can't recognize a key player on his favorite team by his face then I have to question how much one actually follows said team.
The damn numbers should be legible.
Only partly in jest. Of course it was easy to tell who was who when they did closeups and non-action shots and stuff. On the other hand, it made it ridiculously hard to tell who was doing what in real-time TV action. As in, when we actually care who is who; "there's Trey Burke" is not real exciting or useful information in the walk-toward-the-huddle shot. As said above: The damn numbers should be legible. It'd also be nice if "MICHIGAN" and the player's name were legible too, but I'm of an older mindset and understand that sort of thing now takes a back seat to looking totally siccccckkkkckckckc.
I still liked them.
Eh. I don't hate it, which is a good thing. This jersey release is comparable to those weird print shorts they used last year as the blue unis (but pretty much rejected otherwise). And on that scale these are much better. I still actually like the existing uniforms quite a bit, but these aren't awful.
We're like the anti-mascot school. Everyone knows we're the Wolverines but everythign is just "MICHIGAN". For all intensive purposes, Michigan might as well be our real mascot
How intense is our purpose?
It's all the frilly trim, hidden behind the Purdue player above, that detracts from it.
Other than "Wolverines" replacing "Michigan", I actually like the uniform pictured by the OP. More specifically, I dislike it less than our current uniforms because it lessens (but does not eliminate) the frilly trim.
Apparently I've been saying that phrase wrong by whole life. Now I know. Negbang away
Don't worry about it - for the longest time I thought "making ends meet" had something to do with cooking a meat dish of some sort.
Like the unis, but I don't like sharing designs with other schools. Michigan should have it's own style
Every school in this picture may make the NCAA tournament EXCEPT Notre Dame. It's on Nebraska to make it so.
Lol Indiana is in that picture...so no.
EDIT: My mistake. I thought the player in front of Tennessee was wearing "Huskers" not "Hoosiers." I stand corrected.
he's confusing Nebraska with Indiana.
There's a joke in here about Nebraska basketball getting confused with Indiana basketball... I can't come up with it but I'm pretty sure the punch line is Tom Crean.
Now that I look at it closer, it appears that it says Huskers.
What if it's BadgERS?! And it's just their white jerseys?
OMG! HEAD ASPLODE!
that's not Nebraska?
I don't mind it. What does Baylor's jersey say though? Looks like it starts out "Sic..." across the top. That doesn't make sense for the Baylor University Bears...in Waco, TX.
Maybe it says "Sic 'em Bears"?
it is Sic 'Em Bears which is their slogan trademark.
Sic semper bearannis.
I've never been one to care about jerseys. I didn't care about the Michigan St ones or the bowl game jerseys but these are ugly. I'm a little disappointed. For the first time.
Meh on Wolverines, like it otherwise. I was so scared when I clicked this thread. Could be sooo much worse. Mostly relieved that there aren't sleeves. I mean just look at Baylor's (not for too long though).
a high school uni
Unpopular opinion here, but I really loved this template. I liked the simplicity, and the shorts were pretty great. A downgrade from what came before, sure, but in the moment, it was pretty decent.
You are correct - that is an unpopular opinion.
I agree, Bando- I kind of liked them. Maybe it's nostalgia from seeing Jamal Crawford wearing the jersey (it looked great on him with the #1 and his tall, thin frame...sorry, Oscar season must have me in fashion model), but I liked the concept as well. Perhaps change the trim around the armholes and neckline to something less wide/solid, but yeah, I liked it as well. It looked the best on U of M. They did it with UNC's jersey's and it didn't look right at all, but it sort of works with the block M.
Wolverines is too long for the front of a jersey. Otherwise I think they look pretty cool.
It looks just like our current jersey minus the some piping. If it had a Nike logo people would have jersey boners for them.
Indiana is so bad they can't even make the picture. Even Notre Dame got into the picture.
That or maybe they didn't agree to the alternates. I like imagining a world of the first scenario though.
Aren't they second over from the right side?
You are right.
It's official per MGoBlue statement: http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030614aac.html
My sheep self will buy buy buy away.
Lol! Yes, yes you will. Out of curiousity, have you ever done an inventory of all your Michigan gear?
The last time I counted, which was in July, I had over 50 shirts/jerseys. That number is not including shorts, pants, the football receiver glove collection and the football/basketball socks.
That number has definitely increased since I buy something at every single Michigan game I go to.
What I can definitely tell you is that-
Can't wait to go to the athletic department garage sale this summer.
People look at me like I'm from Mars. I know I'm crazy.
Do you sling rock or something?
Hate the shorts. Can we go back to solid colors please?
Gah, boring. One of the thing I like about the current uni is that the shorts actually have a design on them. I've never really gotten over them abandoning the old 80s blue-panel home shorts, especially given how plain the white uniforms tend to be.
Shorts should have a block M and some color or design.
I respect you, man, but you are wrong on both an aesthetic and philosophical level here. These shorts (below) are perfect.
Give me the Fab Five maize, the '89 Championsiop blue, and the Cazzie white and we never have to think about it again.
Ok, those are awesome. I'm speaking mostly of the white uniforms, and somewhat about the blue ones. Michigan's white uniforms, to me, have the potential to be horrifically bland. The one they've used for the last two years is, in my opinion, a significant upgrade over past editions.
The block M on the Fab Five unis was significantly bigger, which in my mind helps overcome the lack of design on the rest of the garment. I do, however, prefer some contrast color. The old/current unis, in my opinion, balance things quite well.
And the new tourney ones are ok.
More "template" uniforms. It's the worst trend in collegiate sports. Letting the manufacturers dictate template designs, into which they force schools under contract.
Indiana, I presume, said "No" to this. They have a classic, iconic basketball uniform that they regard as emblematic of the brand of Indiana basketball. I am guessing that they have decided not to compormise it.
No To "Wolverines." Are we "the anti-mascot school"? I kind of hope so.
It seems to me that the most handsome and most-admired basketball uniforms in recent years were the designs from last year where someone had the brilliant idea to go back to Michigan's basic, simple, classic design from the 1960's and early 1970's:
These are the jerseys they need to go to. I would "buy" one of those. not the cookie cutter crap adidas is putting out there. Once again Dave Brandon is failing to get it right.
Martin signed the Addidas contract. Never let facts get in the way of a good narrative.
I dont care about adidas or nike. It is just that the basketball jerseys could be nicer. And he has the power to change that. Nothing else.
You think Dave Brandon is picking out uniforms?
If he is...he should be fired.
Can't stand YOU PEOPLE who want to use any excuse possible to bag on Brandon and have no idea what you're talking about. As clarified in the next post about Martin signing the contract.
The Brandon stuff is old. It's like the joke about James Harrison getting fined every time someone in the NFL does something wrong.
Sooo can these still be bought?
MDen has a splash on the front page already, calling them "tournament" uniforms.
Kinda plain, actually, but perhaps strong in understatement.
I am thrilled with the current state of the basketball program, and I want to start by saying that. I do not like the yellow flecking on the jerseys or the shorts, though. Michigan already has at least two tremendous sets of designs to work with: the uniforms worn in the Cazzie Russel era and the ones worn by the Fab Five. The 1989 uniforms aren't bad either. Stick with one of those. We don't need this new-fangled chicanery...And what's with Roosevelt trying to drive up wheat prices? What business of that is his?
Want to find ways to upvote this the way ole' Franklin is stacking the Supreme Court.
1966 Home Whites. Perfection personified
why Wolverines on the front? seriously, the design is decent compared to the other shit Adidas has come out with...but why is Michigan taken off the front? its a dumb, pointless switch...why is it so hard to just leave some things alone?
I'm so tired of messing with the jerseys. Football and basketball.
Well, at least they got the M on the shorts right. So there's that. But the TNG Q-esque vector shit on the shoulders and shorts... Yeesh. And, really not on board with Wolverines instead of Michigan.
Really, Adidas is just so bad at this stuff. I know, Nike isn't much better, but really, remember when we wore uniforms for Michigan, and not as vehicles for a shoe company's across-the-brand marketing ideas?
That was before the Marketing Virus took over everything in sports...In a couple of years, we will on a daily basis hear things like "Today's love and support is brought to you by your wife and her corporate partner, Proctor & Gamble."
I just don't get the mindset of a designer who says "I know! Let's put this cool raised geometric vector design on the shoulders!" Or for last year's experiment, "I wonder if I could find a way to incorporate the old Fruit Stripe Gum animal print somewhere... Eureka!"
"MICHIGAN" belongs on the front. "WOLVERINES" is too long and makes the gear look about as distinctive as the average high school uniform.
I like Michigan on the jersey, not Wolverines. With all of the attention to the block "M", i'm surprised that something that didn't have the "M" in the name would be an option.
I would be ok with these if they just said Michigan instead.
Shorts would be sweet if they didn't have the stupid yellow brick road... Just the "M" boys...
Shorts would be sweet if they didn't have the stupid yellow brick road... Just the "M" boys...
I really like the style. So much cleaner. I'm not a fan of "Wolverines" though. It's not as much a part of our identity as some other schools. I'd rather it just say Michigan.
Cleaner than what? How is all that geometric garbage cleaner than, say...
I meant cleaner than the current look. The maize/blue piping down the sides really throws me off. Then theres a block of maize/blue on the neck. These are solid blue or maize with a very modest accent of alternate color. I think they're cleaner. I don't particularly hate any of them, but I'm with you in that I would prefer them to be as clean as possible, like the example above, or (minus the double maize sleeve/neck stroke; one stroke will do):
Agree with everyone else. Keep the unis. Change the name. Michigan should be on the jersey
They look cool, but I guess that means the return to Nike is out of the question...at least for a little while longer.
At least there's no sleeves. I don't mind changing "Michigan" to "Wolverines" every once and a while.
Put MICHIGAN back on the front, damn it.
I like the blue block M I think it gives bball it's own identity
Yost also has the solid blue M
Are these tear-away like last year's?
But they're not good.
...and I don't want to change ANYTHING about what we're doing. Why can't we play around with these in the non-conference?
Because Adidas needs to sell more piles of merch to people like Wolverine Devotee. That's the answer to everything these days, really.
...is how little Michigan makes, off of licensed apparel deals. If anybody thinks that Michigan is getting rich off of all of these stupid little uniform tweaks, think again.
I don't think it is worth it. At least not to Michigan. Maybe adidas is getting some coin out of the deal.
By its own accounting, roughly 5% of Athletic Department revenues come out of all licensing. Compare that, to 22% from PSD's and other individual giving.
I know man, that whole capitalism thing just sucks!
I thought we had the richest contract with Adidas?
Our contract made other schools run and head for the hills.
Why the FUCK are we doing things like every other Adidas school?
This is MICHIGAN. We should ALWAYS have our stuff customized.
Does Oregon follow the Nike template? No. And they're OREGON! They ARE the NIKE template. People don't get to do anything they do...
Michigan should always be different than everyone else. I'm not saying no alternates - I'm saying, we should be the only school that gets to put a block logo on the front of the football jersey. Our basketball (and every other sport) should be one of a kind too.
Totally agreed. Cannot stand the "template" shorts we have. Large block M on shorts. Boom, there you go, you have the best shorts in basketball.
Like a few have voiced before me, leave Michigan on the front, and I'm all for it. Nothing wrong with at least one alternative saying Wolverines though.
What was wrong with these again? I loved when the team wore these during the tournament last year!
They didn't wear these in the tournament last year
They wore them vs. Ohio.
WHAT IF THIS JINXES MICHIGAN AND THEY DON'T MAKE THE TOURNEY???
I would prefer the jersey had Michigan with a block M like the jersey during the Glen Rice era.
Like most others I'm not too keen on the "Wolverines" replacing "Michigan" on the front. Given Adldas' history, I was relieved. They couldve been ALOT worse. I miss the days of the black socks and Block M. Im just hoping these things dont tear after tipoff.
Oops, I have the same spell check as the other guy!
I coach youth basketball. For the younger kids, we could pick any nickname for the team. I chose, "Wolverines," because it would be odd to pick "Michigan" for a team based in southern California. I think it would be another way to build the brand for those kids to embrace, "Wolverines" and buy some Michigan gear based on their time playing for the "Wolverines." I agree that it's awfully scrunched up on the front, but that never hurt Al Albuquerque.
I don't really like the current blue jerseys with that weird curve over the chest (just above the Adidas and B1G logos). It always looks like the cut of a coctail dress to me. The maize jerseys have the same thing but it doesn't stand out so much to me there.
The new ones look fine, like others I'd prefer it say Michigan instead, but not a big deal to me either way.
The design isn't too bad, but "WOLVERINES" looks weird. We've always sort of kept the school nickname at arm's length, never using it on uniforms or having a mascot. A jersey with it makes me think of some knockoff you'd find at Meijer.
Have any of our uniforms ever said Wolverines by itself.
I hate it for that. Put Michigan on there and we're good to go.
It's fine. I like the more classic look, but college basketball unis seem to always be changing so it is hard to become attached.
Everyone's like, "if only it were MICHIGAN instead." But. Like. That's the reason why it's new. Otherwise it's be basically the same as the current maize.
at least they don't say Sic Em Bears on the front like Baylor
At least we're not wearing these.
Pretty "vanilla" but I like.
Is it so hard for Adidas to not have every school have the same template? You play for Michigan, not Team Adidas. I hate that this happens. Nike is no stranger to money grubbing brand loyalty, but at least all the teams look different when they look goofy instead of looking the same and goofy.
For the same reason I never like new uniformz
Wolverines is one of the most unique nicknames in all of sport. Quite frankly, I don't believe it's utilized enough by the athletic department.
That said, you always go with the city, state, university name, etc. -- not the nickname -- on the road jersey.
I was afraid it was going to be something with sleeves. These, however, I love!
I like them. However I don't think I will pay. $90 for one since I just bought a THJ jersey 2 seasons ago that only cost me $50. I think Adidas does a great job with basketball uniforms.
White guys don't play ball in Adidas' eyes.
Also, I don't get why you all love the old 1960's and Fab Five unis. I think the new age look is much more modern and appealing. I swear some of you still think the Mad Magicians are going to be running out of the tunnel on Saturdays.
I also think we should permanently get rid of our white basketball unis. They are AWFUL in my opinion. Use the Maize for home and blue for the road.
We've kind of already established that. Even though we wear them so much that at this point it's more "white for cupcakes" and "maize for everyone else."
I suppose you can wear the maize against the Houston Baptist's of the world, but it really doesn't make a different to me. White for me signals a game that usually doesn't matter.
I don't see the swoosh
of the Rice jersey. I would love to have that. I have the 89 shorts throwbacks (at 2000 length) and they are just mazing to look at. They get lots of use.
