New Football Maize Practice Jerseys

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Saw this run across my twitter feed.

Okay, either that's bad lighting or I'm somewhat color blind. Looks like a mustardy yellow or still orange.

#Michigan quarterbacks no longer wearing orange jerseys in practice. They are now wearing Maize (not yellow) jerseys.

Here are those Maize quarterback practice jerseys that I mentioned last week ...

EDIT: Phew. I'm not color blind. Just a bad photo. Here is a MUCH better look. And they have the B1G patch on them.

Except it's been way longer than 6 or 7 years since the wings and pants were actually maize.  Even in the 70's the front of the pants were maize, but the back yellow.  The start of an unfortunate spiral.  We should go back to maize.

I like the jerseys. If they matched, I liked to see what it would look like on the field.

The Maize jersey should become a thing throughout all of Michigan Athletics. They already scrapped the sport-specific logos and unified the brand under one block M, might as well establish the Maize Jersey.

Also: the uniforms(z) posted on here awhile ago with a Maize jersey & blue pants looked awesome. It isn't gonna kill anyone to change things up once in awhile.

Now multiple alternate jerseyz in a year is dumb.

I don't know how old you are, but among the younger generation of Michigan fans and students this is becoming more and more of a popular idea. Seriously, if the future of the Michigan program is in our hands, it definitely should reflect that. It really is not a big deal to mix up the uniforms every once in a while and I think if done well, a maize jersey alternate would definitely work out well for the football team. In fact, I am stunned that we don't do it already. Even ND uses their green jerseys every once in a while, so I don't see the logic behind resistance to using maize jerseys.

Such a big deal, being made over Brady Hoke's obsession with no red anywhere.  By rights, Devin ought to just be wearing a red no-contact jersey.

Big fucking deal.

Maize jerzeez.  Spare me.

I'm 18. I loved the UTL jersey, didn't like the ones against state in 2011 (if they had Maize pants, it would work) and I loved the Sugar Bowl ones. Loved the 2012 ones as well. Nobody wants to change anything because the reason is "it's always been this way".

It isn't a matter of "it's always been this way."

The change from the old goldish-corn colored "maize" to highlighter maize has been as dramatic as it has seemed (to some) gradual over time.  It's actually been a hell of a long time that it was changed, since I remember exactly what Rob Lytle's helmet and pants looked like.  And that was a long time ago.  We were getting close to "highlighter" back in the days of Wangler-to-Carter, truth be known.  Never bothered me in the slightest.  I actually remember the days of black and white photography in newspapers, and our uniforms looked like two shades of gray.

I liked the old maize; it actually looked like, well, maize.  It sort of said "fall" in a natural way.

But it didn't photograph very well, on Kodachrome or on color tv.  It looked dull.  Everyone in professional photography and cinematogtrraphy knows how colors got shifted.  Maybe it is different in the digital age; but we've made that change, and I don't mind it one bit.  Our new maize is a good, modern, look.  It "pops" on most photographic reproductions.

So there you go; one thing that didn't have to stay the way it was because "it's always been that way."

As for the rest of the uniform; there is a reason that Mercedes doesn't change the three-pointed star and BMW doesn't change the split grille.  Ford preserves the blue oval for a reason.  We are the Winged Victory (Rolls Royce) of college football.  The Golden Arches.  IBM.  The stitched Polo-player.  Those things don't stay the same simply because "it's always been that way."  They might evolve, just a bit (see; "new Maize") but only in the interest of preserving the brand.  Not just to change things up for the heck of it.

And really; if we are talking about the almighty dollah, yours is not the demographic that ought to rule.  My demographic -- the PSD payors -- ought to have the primary say.

Real simple; we'd look like West Virginia or Cal or Delaware in a New York minute, with maize jerseys.

Michigan wore a Maize jersey. Once. I can pretty much guarantee nobody on here saw it since it was in 1928 at Navy due to the Shippers wanting to wear their Blue. MVictors has a nice piece on it.

I really like the "highlighter" Maize.

You honestly think this looks that bad? For ONE game out of the season, I don't think this would hurt.

I know it's not on the same level, but did people throw a fit when Basketball got their Maize uniforms in the late 80s/early 90s?

Well, 1928 pre-dated our winged helmets too.  And, uh, numbers on jerseys.

I'm not so sure but what it predated any standardized usage of Maize and Blue for all of our athletic teams.

...about colleges and tradition (really any institutional entity for that matter).  They are run by crusty, bitter old people craving a bit of stability in an otherwise turbulent world.

The future may well be in the hands of your younger generation but you won't have your hands on the reins until you too are crusty, bitter old people.

Speaking of uniformz.   I know a lot of people on here bitch and moan about tweaks and alternates to our jerseys, but aren't you all thankful you aren't an Albany fan??  How awful were those basketball jerseys tonight.  Hideous!!

Because it's a practice jersey that is made to be obviously bright so they don't hit the QB? And they couldn't care less about matching practice jerseys?

That first picture is UGLY! That is one of those stretch mark jerseys that UCLA, Tennessee, Norte Dame, and a few other Adidas teams wore this past season. The weird fabric design on the shoulders just seems strange. Reminds me of the weird design on our hoops jerseys. You can tell it wasnt designed for UM because it has a white Adidas logo and printed blue numbers. Those, along with the weird shoulders, makes me think it was a last minute thing like last season.

The second picture is something I wouldnt be mad about seeing in a game.....maybe we can get permission to wear maize as a road alternate. Its not white, but its close. Dont the Seahawks have gray (non-white) road alternates in the NFL? If the No Fun League allows it I'm sure the Big Ten can deal with it once or twice a season.
