New fall show on BTN
I just saw a tweet from the BTN that they are doing new show in the fall about the 50 all-time greatest Big 10 student-athletes: http://www.bigtennetwork.com/corporate/Big-Ten-Icons-to-Count-Down-Conf…
It's going to be hosted by Keith Jackson. Obviously Charles Woodson will be #1 but who will be 2-50? Should be a fun show to watch except for when the Buckeyes and Sparties are featured.
Sounds like it will not be just football, right? I'll assume Jesse Owens will be included, and may take the top spot.
Gerald R. Ford?
I'm guessing it will be either the two we mentioned, Charles Woodson, or Archie (threw up in my mouth) Griffin.
Archie Griffin threw up in your mouth? Nasty.
In all seriousness, Micheal Phelps will probably land pretty high.
... On the list! End up pretty high on the list!
I see what you did there..
Phelps was never a Big Ten athlete (he never swam for UM).
He attended a Big Ten school, though... I bet they can wrangle that somehow.
Those who stay will be champions, and champions only do soft drugs.
At least I know I will not be seeing any Andy Katzenmoyer highlights.
when he had to take some classes to regain eligibility for the ensuing fall? From what I recall, he took AIDS Awareness, Music Appreciation, and some other crappy excuse for academics, and barely managed to pass.
"Andy, if you want to play football for millions of dollars, you have to show up in certain rooms occasionally this summer."
"Eh, I might. Some of the time."
I believe the last class he had to take was golf. Real tough course load there big kitten.
That's right. I knew it was something recreational, but couldn't remember exactly.
my list..... 1) Charles Woodson 2) Todd Collins 3) Tim Biakabituka(sp?) 4) Tyrone Wheatly 5) Brian Griese...... No there is no bias in my list.
Tom Harmon, Johnny Wangler, Bob Ufer, Anthony Carter, Rick Leach, Greg Skrepiniak (no idea), Desmond Howard, Damon Dowdell, Sam Sword, etc.
The list goes on and on. Unfortunately, the list is going to be very "inclusive," and Northwestern will get athletes. It will also be heavily skewed towards TV era players. Dollars to doughnuts Juice Williams gets in, seriously.
You had me at hosted by Keith Jackson. I could listen to that guy read the phonebook. I want him and Morgan Freeman to co-read me bedtime stories.
Tim Allen's "pure Michigan" serenade and I will be in a meditative state within minutes.
is my nomination for top 50.
Swimming & Diving at Michigan, third in Olympic diving trials.
Notable character actor in 60s & 70s: The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, ...
In Cool Hand Luke, its Martin's character who says "What we've got here is ... failure to communicate."
I doubt Maurice Clarret will be on that list. Tom Brady might make the list, he did get a degree.
Surprised not to see any Fab 5 or Glen Rice mentions.
It also involves academic acheivement. I doubt any of the Fab 5 went to class.
Juwan Howard (who graduated on time despite leaving school a year early) might disagree with that.
Tom Harmon. You know, Heisman trophy winner? Pilot during WWII, Pro football player, then produced Mark Harmon, star of the CBS! hit drama NCIS?
He's gotta be up there.
Just think of all the changes they would have to make if Rutgers joins the Big Ten before the complete series is aired!!!
I know he didn't play for UM, but I would have to guess Red Grange would be at or very near the top. He was rated the greatest football player in ESPN's ratings a few years back and it is hard to argue against. Although my vote goes to Mr. Woodson or Mr. Harmon, Grange and Owens will be right near the top.
Reading the link, a name that hasn't been mentioned here is Dave Winfield - 2 sport letterman for Minnesota? No idea about the "student" part, but anyone that can letter in both football and baseball has to be listed.
Having said that, my guess for No. 1 would be Jessie Owens. Given that, as an OSU athlete, there's a plaque on the Michigan campus commemorating one of his biggest accomplishments, that's huge.
I think Archie Griffin will be at #1 since he won two Heismans. Jesse Owens and Charles Woodson will be high up there.
