Are these new facemasks? Haven't seen these before.

My question would be why?  By allowing them for players with injuries, they are admitting that they are a safer facemask.  So why not allow them for all players?  Whoever made that decision seems tone deaf to the whole safety issue that has been welling up these past few years.  NFL, you are a stupid.

It could be that these masks are safer in certain ways, but less safe in other ways.  I believe that Justin Tuck of the NY Giants wears one of these because he had a neck injury, and he claims that it's harder to grab the mask and twist his neck.  However, it could be that the more tightly spaced bars would make it harder for doctors to assess his condition in the case of a possible concussion, or would make it more difficult to cut off his mask if that's ever necessary.

I have never seen an incident wear cutting the face mask off is necessary. There are only 4 screws that hold them on and I have seen times where they will unscrew those to remove the face mask.

I couldn't imagine them taking a sawzall or a cutoff wheel to a dude's helmet.

The NFL just banned them or is in the process of banning them unless you prove you need them for a medical reason (i.e. detached retina). They are becoming very popular though.

There is a big difference between the masks in the picture and the Justin Tuck / Ray Lewis / Robert Nkemdichi facemasks, which are just absurd.

If you're referring to the word "rediculous," I think you're not getting that these so-called misspellers are actually using the word correctly:

re-dic-u-lous: of or pertaining to something being diculous again. As in:

  • Ted: That ish was diculous!
  • Sam: Didn't that also happen yesterday?
  • Ted: Yeah, so?
  • Sam: Then you mean it was "rediculous"
  • Ted: Thanks for setting me straight, Sam!

I hate these facemaks. They look horrible.

I hope they don't catch on at the historic Michigan. Also, it seems an opponent could easily get a finger wedged in there and snapped right off!
