I dont know if this has been posted already, but I was on Mden.com and I saw this. I think these are new.
Stop it Dave Brandon
Do you blame Dave Brandon for Kansas wearing a similar style of monochromatic jersey? How about blaming Adidas?
No no no, that doesn't jive. Everything bad that happens is all Dave Brandon's fault!
I saw that Kanasas game. Turned on the TV, started rubbing my eyes to see what was going on with their jerseys. They looked like they were wearing all blue jerseys with nothing on them. Only could tell that it was Kansas with close up shots....just awful
I hate these things
Cincinnati and Tennessee (also Adidas schools, needless to say) have done the same: charcoal numbers on black jerseys, orange numbers on orange jerseys.
I quote the NCAA rule book:
The number shall be one single solid color that contrasts the neutral zone and may be bordered by no more than a ½-inch border of any color(s).
Numbers that do not contrast the surrounding color of the jersey are a violation; the penalty is a 2-shot technical foul.
I used to score for a local high school and if a team came out in one of these I'd be pissed, and I'd be reminding the game officials of the rule. Referees and scorers shouldn't be struggling to identify players on the court--that's what the numbers are there for in the first place.
The public humiliation of a technical foul assessed on national television for a uniform code violation would do Adidas a world of good.
Educate yourself and you will find that alternate jerseys/uniforms are not Dave Brandons choice.
He is the head of the AD, the AD approves said jerseys, ergo he is responsible for it, even though he may not "approve" them personally.
Its not like I'm going to say damn you senior marketing account representative who is vice president to the assistant of junior level intern who approved these things.
Pretty sure it's part of the deal with adidas Michigan has to take whatever the uniform template is. Take a look at Michigan traditional home-road-third uniform set. It's changed 3 times since Michigan signed with adidas.
That's because adidas changes the template every 2 years to keep the look fresh and to try to make money off the sheep (like me) who go out and buy the newest gear.
Every adidas school has the same jersey template in basketball.
Incorrect. Not all Adidas unis are of the same style. Example: Indiana is an Adidas school. Their unis look classic. I'm guessing Adidas gives each school a choice of which style set they want. M chose the halter top with spray paint shorts version. IU chose classic bball unis. Whether it was DB or somebody else in the athletic dept, M chose to do this to themselves.
This is particularly annoying because an M version of IU's style unis would look very similar to the ones the Fab 5 wore...which in my opinion would be the best possible scenario.
You really think Dave Brandon sits around approving jerseys?
Dave Brandon has little to NO say at all. He puts forth the requirements and if they meet the requirements this is almost a 100% team and sport supervisor issue.
You people - yes YOU people have no concept of Athletics Administration.
Dave Brandon is busy raising millions of dollars, he and his senior staff don't have time to be worrying about uniforms.
At my university I am the sport supervisor for Volleyball, Field Hockey and Track & Field. The final say on uniforms is with me and the head coach.
Also, just because Adidas is selling this jersey doesn't mean we'll wear it.
They also came out with those ugly neon yellow/green shoes that all Adidas teams got (EMU wore them vs. us)...I don't expect to see us wearing those either.
It's merchandise, get a grip people.
scarily similar to the jerseys Kansas wore v. WVU.
I have noticed more teams going to this look. The NBA teams had jerseys like this during the Christmas Day games.
These jerseys fall under Adidas' alternate basketball jerseys this year. Almost all of the major adidas schools have these alternates for this season.
Good luck to the refs trying to recognize #s to make calls
C'mon now, surely a huge company like Adidas would never make the mistake of producing jerseys with unreadable numbers...
The KU unis looked like old practice jerseys. Couldn't even see #s, names or "Kansas".
My friend in the KU Ath Dept asked why ESPN was televising summer league games.
on that note, does anyone know where I can get the black we on t-shirt?
Dunno if they have black ones, but MDen is selling Blue versions (they aren't available right now though)
They have the black ones at the MDen stores. I've seen them at the one in Crisler and the one on State. I'm not sure about the website though.
the more maize the better.
I want to see this jersey rip to shreds when Mitch McGary flexes while fighting for a rebound. It must dissolve on an ankle-breaking Trey Burke crossover move. It should instantly evaporate during a Stauskas 3-point follow-through motion. Tear-away jersey are the new "it" factor in NCAA hoops, right?
In the greatest "Shirts vs Skins" game ever played.
More to the point, I absolutely hate these jerseys. Didn't Adidas learn with the football jerseys with maize numbers? They can't be read under bright lights!
Even if they learned, these jerseys were probably already in production when the bowl game happened.
All of the teams playing on Christmas in the NBA wore their respective versions of these jerseys, so me thinks you are right.
You want ot see all of our players in the buff?
More than anything, I want the jersey to fail miserably so we stop wearing Adidas. I actually don't hate these jerseys (as long as the numbers actually appear on the TV screen) as much as others, but the laughable jersey ripping episode in Minnesota was the absolute final straw that broke my back. And, yes...after reading my post again, it does seem laden with a certain level of creepiness that might make people uncomfortable.
Don't they stop? I hate having all these uniforms. I don't see why they can't just make these to sell, and not make the team wear them.
Maybe the team actually likes wearing them?
Please just explain why it's so painful for people when new uniforms are tried out. I mean people act like we are changing logos or something. Things change times change this may not be the best uni but there is always a uproar at the thought of any change to the uniforms just don't get it.
and thats even with the uniforms changing every year for the past 60 years. I don't get it either lol. These ones are going to be extremely bright! I'm assuming these will be worn for the Ohio home game.
I don't think the maize on maize will be a problem like the maize on white was in the bowl game. Basketballs played in doors in college so if the sun bleaches these numbers out you'll have bigger things worry about, like what happend to the roof at Crisler arena!
They should totally take the roof off of Crisler.
I've never understood why basketball needs to be played indoors. Spent a lot of time playing outside when I was a kid. Even when it was freezing cold, we'd compete to see who could make the first shot and smash through all the ice on the frozen net. Difficult to dribble with snow and fingers would nearly freeze too. It was like Manball, but on a basketball court.
OMG the kidz luv it and recruiting is awesome cuz we're like Oregon and we change jerseys cuz it's kewl
I thought this had been known for a whille; Just about every adidas team has one of these, like the NBA christmas day jerseys.
I'm wondering what the deal is with the shoes Nash and the guy guarding him are wearing? I mean, I like me some turquoise but, wtf.
Yeah someone should tell Felton and Nash what their team colors are
My main problems is the numbers are impossible to read. Not as big of a deal as it would be for football, but still quite annoying
If there wasn't a crowd, I would probably think that was a practice shot.
Jerseys aren't that hard people. Pick a color, then pick a somewhat contrasting color for the numbers. Don't overload us with one thing
...that had to be photoshopped (poorly too), right? Nobody would actually field a team in that shit. Or has the NBA really drifted that far into irrelevance? Yikes !
Do tell me you forgot the /s right?
Just don't mess with the home football uniforms and the football helmet - and don't do anything outrageously stupid - and it doesn't bother me. I'd rather stick with one damn uniform, but I try to reserve my "HOW COULD YOU, DAVE BRANDON?" reactions for special occasions.
They would have done that with the blue jerseys.
I mean, I have a problem with the highlighter yellow, but Michigan Blue is so dark. Before Michigan went to the Maize-Out, they originally tried to have "Blue-Outs". The result was a rather dark, depressing, dead looking crowd. If we're going to feature one color and ignore the other, Maize is the way to go.
If it was actually maize but it's neon. I just say that about the blue because I saw the other schools who had the same thing last week and their darker away colors looked ok. Now I say ok knowing that Adidas is complete shit and it will remain a mystery to me forever how we don't have the fat block M on both sides of the shorts with the standard Michigan across the chest in a maize color, not neon yellow.
I think maize outlining of blue on blue would show up better than a thin navy outline separating maize. Maybe that's just me, though.
Did we learn NOTHING about maize letters/numbers with a thin blue outline from the Outback bowl??
I think Adidas is just trolling us at this point. I just can't believe that someone that's actually trying, and, like, paid to do design and stuff, could come out with so many fails in rapid succession.
and a little less bad than the spray-paint stained standard maize unis.
If they would fill in the numbers in solid blue they would be our best uniform.
I love the blue uniform - our best version. The white looks somewhat boring.
I've given up hope for awesome unis for the bball team.
they are bad at it
I actually dont think these look that bad. I'm not a fan of 50 different uniforms like Oregon but my feelings wouldnt be hurt if Michigan wore these.
They're not that bad, up close, but thing is, from far away and on TV they're gonna look awful. See the pic above with Miami (I think it's Miami? Actually can't tell because they just look like plain red tank tops with red smears on the chest) wearing basically the same design concept.
not to be an asshole, but the guy who posted the picture made clear that it was the knicks.
however, this does illustrate how terrible the uniforms are, that you had no idea what team it was.
You may not like that reason, and we can all say Martin made a horrible decision to take more money for a worse product, but that is still the reason. It's a seven year contract and it will be interesting to see what Brandin does. I have to believe the extra merchandise sales with Nike more than make up for the extra contract money fro Adidas. Hopefully that lesson has been learned.
played a big role on steering Michigan towards Adidas because of his connection.
I may be the only one who I think Adidas is fine as far as a manufactor.
It's all about the money. I worked for the sports marketing department when they made the switch and the high ups sat us all down and explained why we went Adidas.
The contract at the time was bigger than NDs and had a clause that would increase ours to match any college that signed a better deal with Adidas down the road. Pretty incredible.
But I'm with all of you who think the money isn't worth this derp fest. The ripping and mismatched jerseys are what kills me. Unacceptable.
Really, really awful...
QUIT IT ADIDAS, YOU'RE DRUNK.
I can't read the numbers! Again!
WOW. That pretty much jumped right off my computer screen, heh.
Don't like it, personally.
This is where, if you're Dave Brandon, you say "thanks, but no thanks." Adidas being our exclusive outfitter doesn't make them our uniform overlords. And if it does, well, we got suckered.
Guys, it's basketball? Do you need to be able to clearly read the #'s while watching - wouldn't you know who's playing without the numbers? I never, ever, look at the numbers.
I know my team, but it would be annoying trying to figure out the other team's players.
More of a maize color!
the NCAA doesn't mandate contrasting number colors on all of their team sport uniforms. After seeing the Kansas v. WVU game, these might actually make life tough on the officiating crew.
they actually do mandate that the numbers are different/stand out from the jersey in the NCAA Rulebook. I don't have the direct citation in front of me, but technically all teams that wear this type of uniform would be in violation of this rule and the opposing team should be granted 2 technical free throws before the beginning of the game. No ref has granted these free throws this season, but it is in the rule book. But we all know how good the NCAA is at rule enforcement...
But apparently not hard enough:
b. A player number with Arabic numerals.
1. Each team member’s game jersey shall be numbered on the front and
back. The number shall be located in the neutral zone(s).
2. The following numbers are legal: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 00, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14,
15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45,
42 Rule 3 / Players, Substitutes and Player Equipment

3. The numbers on the front and back of the game jersey shall be centered
horizontally in the neutral zone and be of the same color and style.
4. The number shall be at least 6 inches high on the back and at least 4

5. Duplicate numbers are not permitted to be worn by members of the

zone and may be bordered by no more than a ½-inch border of any
So does IU get to shoot for these uniforms or can they just force M to change out of them? It certainly seems like they're not in compliance with NCAA Article 5)b)6.
The penalty is a 2-shot technical foul. I suspect the officials would give the option of changing shirts, but there's no requirement that they do so.
But now that I look more closely I see that Adidas seems to be holding to the tradition of having a slightly different shade of yellow for every uniform component. So I guess we can claim that the maize27 numerals contrast with the maize23 shirts and maize18 shorts.
I don't feel like I've done a lot of complaining about the "uniformz", but rolling one out that could be a direct competitive disadvantage is just dumb beyond belief. Regardless of the likelihood of it being an issue (IU has these too) on Saturday, relying on the good will of the referees and the opposing team to not apply the correct rule is stupid on a lot of levels.
People can say what they want about my tactics here, but if I'm an opposing coach I'm calling out every team I see wearing these. At best you get free shots and at worst you force them into the locker room to change uniforms while they spend that fifteen minutes focusing on complaining about having to change and calling me a bunch of bad names.
...what these uniforms are, to me, is a middle finger extended in the direction of the officials, the scorers, the statisticians. They say that not only do we not appreciate their efforts (which at least in the case of the first two are pretty essential to the game itself), we're going to make their jobs as difficult as possible because...well, for no reason really., just because we can.
I come from that background as well, although not in basketball. I would not let a jersey like this on the ice, although admittedly I don't know what these officials are told by their supervisors and evaluators about what they can do to stop two multi-millionaire coaches from outfitting their top-five teams in what they want on national TV.
Typical M Go Blog. Always whining about something. Get with the times. Alternate jerseys are the new "thing". It's not like its the end of the world. Personally, I like em. I liked the football uniforms as well. As long as the winged helmet doesn't change, big F ing deal. Thank god the numbers weren't on the helmets again. Anyhow, things could be worse. They could be camouflage. Cheer up. The sun will rise.
I agree. People on here are always whining about new jersey styles. That's what young recruits/players like! I don't think UM cares what 40-70 year old men like to wear. Obviously if it were up to a majority on here the teams would still be in uniforms from 1991.
They are wearing these on Saturday...get over it.
1. At least these don't look like a TJ Maxx knockoff. I actually don't mind them, and I am usually a uniform curmudgeon.
2. It's basketball, not football. It's not like we have some great tradition of wearingthe same basketball uniforms year after year. We just got a brand new set this year. Plus, there are so many more basketball games in a season that the impact of wearing an alternate every now and again is not as pronounced.
These awful uniforms harken back to the days when there were no identifying marks on sports uniforms, so if you couldn’t identify a player by his body or facial features, or by the position he played, you had no idea who that player was. They’re more like the two-sided scrimmage jerseys that we would wear after coaches abandoned the shirts vs. skins practices.
Watch a game on TV when both teams are wearing these types of uniforms and you’ll see the blue team playing the white team, or the neon yellow team playing the red team.
Now you can’t even tell who the players are WITH a scorecard.
When teams wear these uniforms, they should have to use peach baskets hung on the backboards. And while they’re at it, let’s bring out the old Converse high tops and the short shorts and maybe even the satin warmup jackets and pants. And schedule City College of New York and NYU for one of the marquee telecasts. And maybe Dr. Emmett Brown and Marty McFly should be handling the broadcast and the broadcast should be done only in a grainy black and white. And no Gatorade or cups of water during breaks in the action, just drinks from a water fountain attached to a wall in the locker room or orange slices handed out by a player’s mom.
How will I know which player is Spike Albrecht?!
He'll be the one wearing the number 2 that looks like this:
I think they look pretty nice. They're obviously trying to bank off the NBA's Christmas Day jerseys.
You think these are bad? ND is wearing BLACK jerseys with black numbers with green outline. Absolutely nasty. You can see it in the 2013 adidas spring mag on page 57-
I love some of the gear in there. Especially the "All Michigan All Year" shirt.
...I was trying to psyche out a squad of 14 year olds at a Gus Macker tournament.
But this is Michigan.
I'm essentially an abused puppy at this point. I'll just put my tail between my legs and try to slink away while Dave Brandon, drunk on power, raises another empty beer bottle to throw at me. Maybe I'll just self-immolate outside of Brandon's office like those Tibetans.
Herm needs to on the next site banner.
How about white jerseys with white numbers and a white Michigan?
They're called wife beaters (of course they come adorned with a blue Addidas logo).
That jersey would be perfect if the number and letters were blue. In saying that I don't mind this one as much.
I have a feeling that these will not look terribly flattering on TV at all, but it might very well turn out to be the first time that anyone hears, "Never has a team looked as incandescent as this...". To be fair, however, if Adidas' complete collection catalog is to be believed, then Tennessee is in danger of looking like a team of orange Creamsicles when their "Bleed Out" jerseys are on the court, so at least more than one officiating crew will be calling offensive fouls on "that guy".
Unsurprising that the Adidas logo is important enough to be all blue, and thus the design element that stands out the most. The school name and player number are clearly not as important.
Aren't the top 3 teams in the county wearing all wearing Adidas? Throw on your Michigan Starter jacket and go shovel the driveway pops...and don't forget your heart pills.
Legibility be damned, I like these a lot. I just really wish MDen would sell basketball jerseys with stitched numbers/letters and not screen print.
UCLA had the best ones, though.
last time I checked none of you are playing on the basketball team... if the kids enjoy playing in these, let them!
Indiana has these too. I woldn't be surprised if both teams wear them this weekend.
I would say that's a good guess.
...would look pretty sweet.
I would actually like these quite a bit if they just made the outline a little thicker so we can actually see the names/numbers.
...I guess they are not as bad as football alternatives, BUT why can't we just switch back to Nike! There has never been as cool a college b-ball uniform as the Fab Five. Those bagging maize shorts with the giant block M on he side and Nike swoosh were epic. Even in the post-Fab Five days in the late '90's u couldn't walk into a Footlocker or Champ's without seeing those jerseys or shorts prominently displayed in the front of the store. And aside from the simplicity and classic looks, the quality was so far superior to the cheap crap that Addidas produces!
Someone on board must work for Adidas!
Trolling in someone that continues to anonymously down vote a reasonable post, no longer on the front page of threads, without offering to express their difference of opinion in an actual post.
Again I dislike the alternative jersey, and prefer a return to the classic Fab Five uni's of '92/'93...if u disagree pls discuss...
I would LOVE to see Indiana shoot free throws for this stupid jersey. Then maybe Brandon would wake up and pay attention to the crap that Adidas shovels at us instead of just rubber stamping everything.
BTW this was supposed to be a response to the earlier post pointing out that these jerseys are in violation of the NCAA rulebook and could result in our opponent being awarded technical foul shots since the number does not contrast with the jersey color. Dunno why it got placed at the bottom of the thread.
Indiana has an all-red version too. It's adidas passing their NBA Christmas Day look from this year to the college level.
I, for one, think they are very sleek and stylish. My guess is that we and Indiana will be wearing them tomorrow night.
Double Techs. Both teams are shooting!
I don't care what we wear, just as long as the ball gets through the hoop. Go blue!
