New Adidas Visor for Michigan Helmet
(Post updated because it IS a visor, not the helmet itself)
Wyatt Shallman just posted a picture of his helmet with an Adidas visor.
Is it just me or does that Adidas logo look HUGE?
Spring ball starts today.... Very excited to get to work with the 33 and the new helmet #letsgo

it just ticks me off that the color was allowed to be changed. I have my grandmothers mantle and tassel from 1928 when she graduated from UM, it has Maize. Both of my parents mantle tassels are Maize, from their graduation. My brother's Jersey's and helmet from his playing days are Maize. His son's stuff from the marching band as well as some of the Adidas UM wear I've bought is not anywhere close to the color it should be......just sayin. Thanks to this blog for letting a die hard newbie fan vent. I can't wait till my tickets arrive. It's my 28th season GO BLUE. I'm ready for football, especially living around all of these OSU people.

hate the lack of actual maize seen around these parts for the last several years.
We really should stop calling it the maize and blue. It's yellow and blue now.

I don't think the lack of Maize is a new thing. I think the maize/yellow thing has been ongoing for 30 years now. I don't think it has been consistent at all.

Welcome to the world of high definition television where schools want their uniforms to "pop" on the big screens people are watching at home.
Seriously, though, I can't get too wrapped up in the color of "maize" in the uniforms. When I came to UM in 1978, the football team was wearing two tone pants without a block M on them. Does anybody here want to go back to that look?
Since then, I've seen maize go from a very pale yellow to an almost orange color and every variation in between. Hell, even the shape and dimensions of the wings and stripes on the helmet have changed plus there have been perhaps four or five different road uniforms (not including the one offs worn for bowl games, etc.).
But if you want to go old school, bring back the helmet stickers. Bo would approve and if you were one of those people who complained about them, he would tell you where to shove it as well.
MGoVictors has a wonderful page on its website outlining every uniform change detail 1879 to the present. Go to http://mvictors.com/uniform-timeline/

one is the proper color of maize. Because that was the color of my childhood. So we need to go back to that.
Also helmet stickers. But for wins only, as stated above.

Notice the two tone color in the maze pants. Back in the day the front was a silky shiny compared to the flat color on the back side.

So the logo is the same size as before and is on the visor (I initially thought it was the helmet itself).
Yep, my initial post was definitely of the old man, "get off my lawn" variety. Oh well...it works for Clint Eastwood (for the most part).
EDIT: That said, I still think the tabs cover too much of the wings.

Maybe the logo is the same size but the HELMET is smaller?

I mean, I'm all for if a player needs to wear a visor (afraid of being poked in the eye, etc.). But there's really no reason why those tabs can't also just be clear plastic. It's not an adidas thing, it's an everybody thing. In other words, more of what the venerable Uni-Watch calls "logo creep." Them's the breaks.

Reading something about Cam Newton at Auburn that he had over 20 Under Armour logos on his uniform while on the field.
February 24th, 2015 at 3:22 PM ^
Cam hated Under Armour so much he signed with them as a spokesperson. Also, he was fined by the NFL after they realized he played for years with a UA visor, against NFL rules.

The ridiculousness that all apparel companies now have with their logo being displayed everywhere on the player.

I mean, when you watch Michigan play in the Adidas/post-Brandon era, there isn't a shot of a Michigan athlete from any angle that won't have either a block M or an Adidas logo, often both. I really think some marketing guru Brandon brought on had that in mind when you look at where the new Ms are placed on these uniforms now. Goes right alongside the M supplanting other logos like the split-M and the university seal.
Really, between shoes, sweatbands, jersey logos, pants/shorts, helmets, hats, visor tabs... It's amazing how cluttered these uniforms have become.

At the current rate of clutterization, in five years we're going to look like NASCAR.

I was at U of M during the 2004 season, but I think those are the best of the home jersey's Michigan has ever had.
February 24th, 2015 at 4:12 PM ^
The tiny swoosh tucked away in the collar, the sleek fit, unobtrusive fabric template, the way they looked in the sun... They really were excellent.

Last years hockey jersey had block M overkill. I actually liked it better when we had the university seal on the shoulders.
February 24th, 2015 at 3:21 PM ^
Will there or won't there? I remember them fondly from watching as a child, so I wouldn't mind a return to that tradition. As long as it's not for cleaning locker rooms, etc. (as mentioned previously)

the inherent beauty of the winged helmet. To me, the large black attachment tabs with the prominent Adidas logo are far, far more intrusive. At least helmet stickers are about Michigan.

This is the new "Speedflex" helmet with the flexible front plate on the forehead area above the facemask. Did I just out devotee someone?!
February 24th, 2015 at 4:02 PM ^
Hell, if we're making helmets flexible again we might as well go all the way:

It looks like the helmet is the new Riddell Speed Flex
Supposed to decrease risk of concussion and allows for quick release of the facemask for paramedics.

Ohhh so close. +1 for the picture though.

for the facemask can be a pain in the ass to re-attach with mud an grit in them too.
At least now I know the reason for them.

I'm not sure it would matter much as far as the helmet is concerned. The helmets aren't made by Nike, Adidas or Under Armour.
February 24th, 2015 at 4:00 PM ^
That UA will be the death of the basketball program. With how dirty AAU ball is with sponsorships there, you really need to be a Nike or Adidas school in order to get top talent. Here is an interesting article from Rick Pitino about it. Michigan will go back to Nike, I personally guarantee it.

I don't know. Maryland is with UA and they're doing okay.

Players are going to wear the visor either way--it's the fact that these things are designed to also serve as a shoe advertisement that's the issue.
But, do go ahead projecting this into something it's not.

Who cares really?
