New 98

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Just wanted to see what the thoughts are on DG wearing #98?

I wasn't that crazy about the idea of it coming out of retirement, but seeing it on the field and being talked about and given special attention to...people notice.

It's very unique having a QB wear #98. It creates buzz. Not just fans who may not already know why DG has it, but just people watching a game will look it up and learn about Tom Harmon.

I think that is the goal of the Legends program.

Sorry for posting this in the Snowflakes Thread, without relaizing that it might've fit better here. (And though I wasn't a fan of bringing "98" back by having it worn by a quarterback, for last night, at least, the legends jerseys of 98 and 21 looked pretty good.)

For one final time to The Big House they came
The green-clad “fig-thing” leprechauns of Notre Dame
The crowd broke a record; Eminem sparked debate
And they brought back a legend with “Old 98"

Lee Corso failed with “Win one for the chicken!”
Gibbons set a new record with his field goal kickin’
And three Irish defenders got to learn a harsh lesson
‘Bout the great downfield blocking of young Jehu Chesson

Michigan’s defense played just as they’d been taught
Offense got three touchdowns that J. Gallon caught
But after one end-zone miscue, it all looked for naught
Still, the outcome was just what the Maize and Blue sought

And in the end, purple faced Kelly’d been spanked
So now will Drew Sharp have the Wolverines ranked?

Of tweets and texts asking about it, and when I explained they were honoring a guy who was an old Michigan QB who wore 98, everyone said "that's so cool'

...about the contrariness of assigning the uniform number 98 to a QB.

I love the fact that it is so totally contra to the NFL, and all of its regimented standardization.  The more that collegiate football distinguishes itself from the NFL, and becomes less like the NFL, the better in my view.

Do people know the story of how Harmon got number 98?  MVictors recalls the story; it is admirable the extent to which they confessed some of the haziness of the old story:

It was in high school that Harmon also settled on the famous 98 jersey.  The stories differ, even in the Harmon family.  Basically it goes something like this:  Tom was a freshman on his high school team and he got in trouble with the coach for chewing gum and blowing bubbles.  (Some versions have him being sent to the locker room to take off a jersey he’s already wearing.   In others he’s not wearing a jersey at this point).   As a sort of punishment, he’s asked to return kick-offs against the varsity and of course no one can catch him.    The coach, seeing his brilliance, asked him to go grab a uniform.  Young Tom picked out the best available gear in the locker room and returns to the field.  The coach noticed that Harmon chose the jersey number of the star running back and sent him back to the locker room to pick out something else.  All Harmon can find is a dingy #98 jersey in the corner and he threw it on.   He embraced it.

Interesting - I did not know that story before.

I had mixed feelings about the Legends Jerseys at first, but I see now that they're bringing thee legendary players back into the conversation, which I think is a great thing and helps people appreciate our history more.  The one thing I would change is just to make the patch a little smaller - it covers too much room.

I thought it was a great tribute to Tom Harmon and Devin Gardner.  Gardner looks great in the 98 and he has the character and the talent to pull it off.  I won't say he is the next Tom Harmon but Tom Harmon would be proud.
