New 98
Just wanted to see what the thoughts are on DG wearing #98?
I wasn't that crazy about the idea of it coming out of retirement, but seeing it on the field and being talked about and given special attention to...people notice.
It's very unique having a QB wear #98. It creates buzz. Not just fans who may not already know why DG has it, but just people watching a game will look it up and learn about Tom Harmon.
I think that is the goal of the Legends program.

Because he's good at football. Insightful, I know

I love it. Also got several texts from non-Michigan fans saying how cool it was to have a qb rocking a 98 jersey.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:48 AM ^
98 is the new number for dual threat quarterbacks
September 8th, 2013 at 12:39 AM ^
Totally agree. I love DG wearing old 98. I think Harmon would have been proud.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:57 AM ^
I love it and think Devin is the perfect player to wear the ole 98. I think as others have mentioned that this is fitting tribute to Tom Harmon and will lead others to learn more about his legacy. I still remember reading Tom Harmon received a standing ovation his last game at Ohio Stadium.

Just wins.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:49 AM ^
Buzz helps (or at least can't hurt) in attracting top talent that helps create more wins sooooo...
September 8th, 2013 at 1:04 AM ^
So you want to be MSU? Have fun with that dumpster fire
September 8th, 2013 at 12:41 AM ^
It was great hearing " Ol Ninety Eight" all night long. This one was my favorite as some of the others seemed forced.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:42 AM ^
I looked up his information after the game.
Tom Harmon wasn't just a great athlete, he was a great man. I am glad Gardner is wearing the number.
We may be quick to jump down Dave Brandons throat but he makes a lot of good moves. This is one of them.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:42 AM ^
I loved it, seeing him running around in that number was beautiful. Also the fact that he respects and seems to be well versed in who Tom Harmon is as a man and player when asked about him was nice. It's a good thing like you said, Harmon will be more known outside of Michigan fans because of this and I don't see how that is a bad thing and not honoring him.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:43 AM ^
Don't like it. Old 98 should have stayed retired.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:45 AM ^
Color me shocked.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:49 AM ^
Hah. Exactly, Bando is the grumpiest person on the board. Hates everything. His family approves, that's all that matters.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:50 AM ^
Don't care. And I'm not the only one who thinks the Legends program is stupid.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:54 AM ^
Lighten up, man... We just fried some chicken.
September 8th, 2013 at 1:14 AM ^
He's entitled to his opinion.
I also think the Legends program sucks. I wanted Funchess to go down as "#19 Devin Funchess." Ain't happening now. Same with Gardner and Gallon. How does a player create his own legacy now?
September 8th, 2013 at 1:21 AM ^
You're making it sound like the players are forced to switch numbers. I'm fairly certain that's not the case.
If you wanted Funchess to wear #19 for four years, great, but maybe he didn't.
September 8th, 2013 at 1:23 AM ^
Isn't this Devin's second number change?
September 8th, 2013 at 9:07 AM ^
Someday, they'll refer to Gardner as ole 117.
September 8th, 2013 at 1:22 AM ^
Edwards, Terrell, Lewan, Biakabutuka, and countless others have; by being really good.
September 8th, 2013 at 7:23 AM ^
"Carter, King Carter! He ran like a penguin with a hot herring in his cummerbund!"
September 8th, 2013 at 1:58 AM ^
I wanted Braylon to go down as "#80 Braylon Edwards." Ain't happening now.
September 8th, 2013 at 5:12 AM ^
I wanted the #1 jersey tradition to continue, but looks like it ain't happening now. The funny thing is everyone loves the #1 tradition and hates the Legends program, but it's pretty much the same thing. However, I don't like the idea of the patch. If you say Gardner is allowed to make his own legacy out of #98, then he shouldn't be wearing a patch on his chest that says his number is Harmon's. The Legends program is OK, assuming players aren't under any pressure to change or keep it.
September 8th, 2013 at 11:14 AM ^
I think the legends program dilutes the prestige of the number one jersey. It was cool when it was the one position and very selective. Itis less cool with a different number for every position.
September 8th, 2013 at 10:53 AM ^
No one talks about Taylor Lewan since he's trapped in the shadow of #77
September 8th, 2013 at 1:16 AM ^
And when Fritz Crisler introduced the winged helmet in the 1930s, I'm sure your ancestors were shocked and appalled at this horrible violation of tradition.
Seriously man, you've got to lighten up. It was a great victory and Devin did all he could to honor the jersey.
September 8th, 2013 at 1:50 AM ^
Have fun being wrong.
September 8th, 2013 at 7:44 AM ^
#98 threw 2 TDs to #21 under the lights to beat ND in front of the biggest crowd in history, at the finest stadium in the nation.
just for once, I'd like to hear someone have an open mind about something and admit that it may be actually pretty cool.
Also, WHAT HAS DG DONE TO DESERVE 98? HE'S ONLY STARTED 7 GAMES
September 8th, 2013 at 11:36 AM ^
Could Brandon in reality be a genius? Could it be that part of the reason for the Legends program is to mitigate any future damages associated with the suit against the NCAA, and individual institutions, by preventing any current individual player being associated with a particular number?
September 8th, 2013 at 12:43 AM ^
but the day we lose because of him we will demand he return it, especially if its to MSU or Ohio.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:48 AM ^
...among us will do that. And they can be safely ignored.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:43 AM ^
It is fun, I remember hefty lefty and flutie being 22, but can't remember any other QBs being anything other than single digits or teens.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:47 AM ^
wore 22 I think, that's all I know.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:56 AM ^
Wore #22 at Tennessee, IIRC.
September 8th, 2013 at 9:50 AM ^
Heath Shuler wore 21 at Tennessee. Also former Lions QB Stoney Case wore 25 at New Mexico
September 8th, 2013 at 12:59 AM ^
Not that I or anyone on here (I assume) remember or were around for this, but Harmon's QB, Forest Evashevski, wore #69.
September 8th, 2013 at 1:02 AM ^
I do rember, there was a movie after all.But let's not go back before Sputnick on this. Incidentally -and cool story bro- but Evesheski's daughter was my civics teacher at Commie high.
September 8th, 2013 at 9:14 AM ^
Wasn't Bernie Kosar #20 at the U (ytm)?
September 8th, 2013 at 12:44 AM ^
He won us the game.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:45 AM ^
.......TREMENDOUS! Original I know but I posted earlier that I think it'sgreat
September 8th, 2013 at 12:45 AM ^
is a great choice for 98 and he will represent it well for the duration. Devin showed some toughness after that pick, that Denard lacked at times after a turnover. Both great quarterbacks and I am relieved that Devin decided to stay. He truly deserves #98!!!
September 8th, 2013 at 12:51 AM ^
That was an impressive showing by Gardner. He showed his character by coming back after the interception and leading the team down the field. I've seen plenty of players fall apart after less disastrous plays than that.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:46 AM ^
Before the game, I didn't like it. Right now I'm too happy to care. I'll go back to complaining about it tomorrow.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:47 AM ^
The only thing I don't like about it, and this is a big one, is that Gardner can't cement his own legacy with his own jersey number.
September 8th, 2013 at 12:50 AM ^
is, that if Devin has a great year, you're looking at the possibility of him going pro anyhow.
