I'm glad we got in.

His mentor and former AAU coach (Team eLEAte) is a big fan of Stauskas, Sanderson and UM's player development. He is a mentor and former coach to Kawhi Leonard and Tony Snell, also.

Will sit out but 2 years of eligibility, perfect transition into Wilson starting aftewards. He is appealing Nevada's decision to ban him from Westcoast schools so that is a thing to look out for. UM doesn't seem to be in great position with any 2015 stretch 4s despite recruiting a ton of them.

I posted the tweet below in the earlier thread on Dawkins. Huff's former AAU coach says five schools have expressed interest in him:

He averaged 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 2013-14 and led Nevada in 3-point shooting (40.3%) and free-throw shooting (82.2%).

Not being a homer here but that is not competition.  There are about 15 schools in the country who are competition and those are not.

Here is our "offer sheet" to you, said recruit:

  1. Hell good academics
  2. Hell good coaching
  3. Conf championships 2 of the past 3
  4. Elite 8s or better 2 years in a row
  5. A realistic chance of making you an NBA player if you put in the work
  6. A system that makes wings/guards stars
  7. Top 25 facilities
  8. BCS conference, generally considered top 2-3 every year now

Iowa, Dayton, Nebraska, Creighton cannot offer that combo... and it is not even close.  Iowa would be the only one who could even make a case for 4-5 of those.

Don't worry about his weight - it is about his skill set.  If his handle is good he can be a "stretch 3".  Then you have a 6'9 4 in Donnal, a 6'10 5 in Doyle and a 6'8 3 for 20 minutes a game?  Yes please.  #Rebounding #RimDefense

We are going to be very light at 2s and 3s all the sudden in 2015-2016, esp if Irvin goes pro.

People get caught up in heights.  Jordan Morgan at 6'8 is very different than Jalen Rose at 6'7.  What are their games? (I have no idea myself just throwing it out there)

Huff would be a perfect 4 for Beilein. Tall but can shoot. Basically a 3 in the NBA. He's a legit talent too, so this would be quite the pick up. In 2015, McGary will likely be gone with only Donnal and Doyle at the 5, meaning we'd have minutes available at the 4. Only DJ Wilson really fits that spot, and even he's more of a wing anyway.

Are their some names out there (with mutual interest) either transfers, 14', or 15' kids that the coaches are looking at to replace McGary when he decides to enter the 14' draft? Or are we riding Donnal, Doyle, Wilson, Chatman....

With the latest mock draft having McGary going 26 to the Heat got me really nervous and I tried to put my self in his shoes...."If I hurt my back again staying at Michigan I will never go to the NBA" So then I thought shoot maybe it is best for him to go to the NBA.....Then what does Michigan do? Another part of me thinks with Horford leaving and the coaches or media not scrambling to find 6'10" guys that maybe he is staying....thoughts?

I bet he doesn't go.  Although your scenario is possible, the more likely scenario is his back scares off scouts this year (especially when the draft is so deep already) and having one healthy season makes him a top-10 pick.  The problem with him is that his back is still not 100%, and unless he can get it there by the draft work-outs (which is like a month away), he's fucked.

Almost no one who is projected to go high in this draft decided to come back, and the consensus is that McGary is a second round pick.  So if he's worries about hurting his back again next year, that's equally bad if he declares and misses the first round because then he just won't get signed and he'll flounder forever.

Exactly.  I think his decisions hinges more on whether he can work out completely and be 100% more so than anything else.  Afterall, he really was a star for only like 6 games last year, so not much to rely on.   If he's not 100%, he risks slipping big time.

This likely lengthens the odds that Huff (who's originally from Altadena, California) transfers to Michigan or any school east of the Mississippi:

Michigan also mentioned as potential landing spot for Byron Wesley. Difference is he would be immediately eligible as a grad transfer. Averaged 17.8 ppg for USC this past season

Who is a complete fucking idiot.

Wesley would not play ahead of LeVert or Irvin (and may very well end up behind Chatman as well), and as such I don't see him being interested in coming here to come off the bench for one year.  Way more likely that we fill the roster holes on the wings with guys in the 2014 class.

PurpleStuff

But very few players transfer to play fewer minutes.  Wesley is leaving a team that gets a big influx of talent next year.  It probably isn't so he can play less.

I guess I don't know who our staff would start, but I assume John Beilein and company have eyeballs.  Guessing they will pick the guy (LeVert) who is projected as a first round pick, shoots over 40% from 3, has a positive assist/TO ratio, and plays athletic/active defense.  Or the guy who was Mr. Basketball in Indiana and also shoots over 40% from 3.

Scott Wolf just makes shit up on the regular.  He has no sources or inside information whatsoever.  And he can't spell to save his life.

I will grant that he does have a nice collection of obscure European soccer jerseys and an admirably creepy demeanor with the young ladies in his employ.

Have you seen Wesley play?

He's not as good as anyone we've had at that 2-guard spot (Manny/THJ/Stauskas/LeVert) under Beilein.  He's a wide bodied guy for a guard who can rebound pretty well and occasionally hit a runner in the lane, but he's not a playmaker and can't shoot it anywhere close to the level those guys can.  If Chatman is close to living up to the hype he'll fill that role you describe much better than Wesley would.

There's a reason Wesley's looking to transfer going into his senior year rather than heading to the NBA, despite what seem like impressive numbers.

The comment you quoted makes no sense.  He has to sit out a year.  In a year's time LeVert is gone.  Irvin at this point you assume is 50/50 gone.  Even if he stays LeVert is gone and you are competing with Chatman in a 3 man rotation for those 2 positions.

p.s. since the guy  is saying he is competing with Irvin and LeVert -  that means he seems more like a 3 to me.  Which would be very exciting to have a 3 with that length,

Wesley is just a guy who took a bunch of shots on a terrible team.  He would not make Michigan better in any way.

He was also suspended during the end of the season, which again makes him less attractive to our staff.  You'll also notice there is no info from Michigan sources about our guys being remotely interested in him.

There is, however, a claim from his AAU coach that Michigan was one of the schools that received his release.  The Wesley talk is just speculation.

The other difference is that a 6'8" guy who shoots 40% from three and has two years of eligibility left is a much more intriguing proposition than a guy with attitude problems and a very limited game fleeing competition for one last hurrah to audition for the Euro leagues

USA Today actually had a piece a couple weeks ago where he actually expressed surprise at the restrictions placed on his transfer as it essentially limited him to Big Sky and Big West schools, as I recall. Given the limits, I am pretty sure that even Horace Greeley would have told this kid to go east.

This article has a bit more on the partial lifting of restrictions on where Huff can transfer:

On Thursday, Huff and Nevada agreed on a less restrictive list. Huff, an Altadena, Calif., native, can now transfer to non-MWC teams from Southern California, meaning the Pac-12's UCLA and USC and WCC's Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and San Diego. Restrictions on the rest of the Pac-12 and WCC remain.

Here's an important point to keep in mind:

Playing primarily the power forward position, it is believed one of the major reasons Huff is transferring is his desire to play small forward, his projected position in the pro ranks.

Fascinating. Thanks for the quotes

The first blockquote sucks for us because most guys are going to want to stay local all other things being equal.  Not that they are equal.  So it would have been better for us if he had been restriced east of the Mississippi ;) (but I am being selfish, its better for him that they caved in)

The second blockquote is really fascinating because it is GR3 all over again.  And yes as I said in other posts you can't just look at someone's height nowadays and project a position.  A 6'8" 3 who can shoot the 3 and rebound would make Beilein's system even more devastating than it is now.  If you never saw Jalen Rose tape 20 years ago you'd say "oh a 6'7 HS SR... going to grow into a power forward with an inch or two more".
