Neg Tweeting. Don't.

Here is another classless example of fans going off on teenagers when they don't pick their school. I've been following Shelton Gibson because I wanted Michigan to recruit him, but I don't think we did. Here are some comments from the kid, obviously OSU fans attacked him on Twitter and he exchanged Tweets with them. Neither are good ideas, but...he's a kid.

"The problem came about when I committed to one school, and some people got all mad I didn't pick their school and they came at me on Twitter and on the internet"

"I have a lot of people saying I'm too dumb to play college football, and that Ohio State dropped me because I will never qualify academically."

"For the Ohio State fans, there was never anything bad about their school at all. I just felt real comfortable with West Virginia."

"It's just best for me to get away from home and grow into a man. I hope people understand."

I don't need to say it, but I will. For the love of God and all that is holy, please don't Tweet at recruits.

That said, I think it's naive to suggest that no Michigan fan has ever said something negative to a recruit via Twitter before.  Dawson's decommit being an obvious example.

In it's truest form is there anything "creepier" than a college sports fan? How many hours a week do you spend watching and talking about 18-19 year old kids? How is that any different?

HUGE degree of separation there. When watching the game, you are watching what the player does as part of a team playing a sport. You're caring about what he does during the game and then go home to discuss what happened during that game and wonder what that means for the next one and that's where your involvement ends. You don't have that separation on twitter and can interact directly with someone you have no good reason to interact with. Thus twitter = creepy. Leave High School kids alone.

Well, it goes back and forth. Is it worse to get personal on a high schooler because he decided to go to college at a different place than you (generic you) wanted him to go, or is it worse to do the same with one of your own student athletes?

Either way, I honestly don't understand why anyone takes this stuff personally. Whether you're ripping on him for his college choice or tendancy to make poor [insert sport] decisions, I'm pretty sure he's not doing it to upset people he doesn't know.

that ranks WVU ahead of OSU in any university-wide academic category. OSU gets ripped here because it's "only" a second tier public university, but WVU is one of the worst flagship institutions in the country, academically speaking.

OSU is more or less indistinguishable from any good flagship school after a short list at the top (probably only Cal, UVa, UNC, Michian, Texas); WVU would be about 46th or 47th on that list.

my metrics indicate that every school is better than OSU. However, this "Michian" school you mention is listed amongst other academic heavyweights. Where exactly is that located?

EDIT: WVa ranks #9 nationally in Rural Medicine and #18 in ceramics. Beat that Ivy League!

Also, OSU is actually a good public university.  Good, not great.  Michigan is a big step ahead, but ignoring all the jokes, Gordon Gee has actually raised the bar in terms of academics, and quite significantly.
