Need Some More Help for the Night Game.

Submitted by house of pain on

I posted a few days ago about needing a place to stay for the weekend of the night game. Well we finally got a place to stay. I took the advice from a few of you who said that Canton would be a good bet, and those of you were right.

Now, I'm going to need some advice on what time you think I should head to Ann Arbor on the 10th. I'm hoping that gameday is there but I realize it may not be. We really want to get there early and probably walk around for hours to take in the city. Like i said before in the other thread, we are coming from Philadelphia and my knowledge of Ann Arbor is next to nothing since only being to a game once. So, should we head to town for breakfast and lunch at some notable restaurants? Anything advice will be greatly appreciated.

Buy a GPS. A Garmin will take you anywhere you want to go without any prior knowledge of the area. Just search for a place, click it, and press go. It really will take a lot of stress out of your trip knowing that it will point you in the right direction.

I think you should head there at 5am. McDonald's is really good for breakfast -- I suggest the Big Breakfast with Hotcakes.

As far as lunch goes, you really can't beat the Subway on South University.

Hope that helps!

If you are planning on tailgating I would park where you want to tailgate early in the morning and then walk to campus and go eat breakfast at Angelo's (suggested breakfast: eggs benedict). It is on the exact opposite corner of campus but by doing that walk you could see most of Angelo's. (You could also park where you want to tailgate and then call for a cab to take you there.

After Angelo's I suggest walking around campus and taking in the sites. When you are in the Law Quad I would suggest crossing the street and getting a drink at Dominick's (the sangria there is amazing, if you eat there the Italian Sub is great as well). If you wanted to hit more campus favorites then I would say stop by Ashley's Pub. Then go to Crazy Jim's Blimpy Burger for lunch.

Then begin your treck back to your tailgate spot and maybe stop by Yost and see the new scoreboard and the arena if you haven't seen it yet. Then begin to tailgate. Walk over to the Crisler lot around 5:30p because the Victor's walk should happen around 6pm.

Post game if you want to wait for traffic to die down a bit I would suggest walking to Cottage Inn on Williams for some pizza and beer post game.

If you want to watch Gameday then I would suggest getting to Angelo's really early and eating and then driving over to the stadium, parking, go to gameday & then go down to campus for a little bit to tour around and get lunch. (The last time ESPN Gameday was here you had to get in line really early to get into where they were taping due to small area they had. If they move it to the golf course it might not be the same problem but that will depend where they set up)

Good luck!

Last time Gameday was here was the Ohio game in 2008 I believe. They set up in the small parking lot on Main St. north of the Stadium. Because of the small area they set up aluminum bleachers on the perimeter of the lot with the standing area in the middle but it limited the amount of people that could enter.

The time before that they set up on AAGO but I did not go see how they set that up.

And the time previous to that they set up within the Stadium gates and only people with tickets could get into the area to watch gameday.

I would hope they go back to one of the golf courses or set up on the grass area in the Pioneer lot.

The AAGO setup was on top of a hill and open to everyone.

Part of the reason they did the parking lot setup was because the OSU game started at noon, and the crew needed to move inside the stadium for the last segment of gameday/beginning of the game. With an 8:00 start, I'd say they're probably going to do AAGO.

I hope you are right. I didn't go watch Gameday for the OSU game because if you wanted to be there for Gameday you had to give up on tailgating for the game and I am not willing to do that. I don't need to be in the front row or anything but I would like to go watch a little of it and then go back to the tailgate.

The last time they were inside the stadium gates the game was a 3:30p game and they were done with the show at 12p.

You could only enter the stadium from the north gate and they had barricades up so you could only go to the Gameday stage and that was it. After the show was done they made everyone leave and then closed the gates and then opened them back up at 1:30p for the game.

Going around Ann Arbor is certainly a good option and I agree with the post above that says park your car first and than go walk around if possible, you have plenty of time. Personally, if game day is there I will be there at 5 or 6 am and hopefully Pioneer allows parking for that time (I prefer Pioneer over the golf course, although I often find my way over there). I would swing by Meijer and buy a cheap grill and food and just hang out with your neighbors all day. I am sure there will be plenty of good tailgating where ever you park.

For a decent burger Bagger Daves is good and probably won't be crowded (because it's 3-4 miles off campus). Also, Morgan and York is delicious and a lot like Zingermans (started by two former employees) for 1/2 or 3/4 the price. Also grab a fifth of something in the front of the deli.

Morgan & York is great for fancy picnic provisions; although I guess you could eat there, it would be better for taking out to eat elsewhere.

Since you are not familiar with AA, know that "Zingermans" is not one place. The Deli is the original, in an area north of downtown called Kerrytown. There will also be a farmers market up there Saturday so it's nice to walk around. There is also Zingermans roadhouse, which is a couple of miles west and is a full-service restaurant. Brunch is awesome there (as are all meals) but you'll want a reservation if you want to eat there. There's also the bakery & creamery but those are tucked away in an industrial park so no one is likely to mean those.

I'm not going to lie to you, you probably want to go to zingermans (full disclosure I work there) but you don't want to go on a football saturday, unless of course you really enjoy waiting in line, and we will feed you samples of food while you wait so at least there is that.

The best games on the 10th are

Mich vs ND

Bama vs Penn. St

S.Car vs. UGA

Utah vs. USC

Ore St vs. Wisc

I think our stiffest competition for Gameday being in town are the South Carolina/Georgia and Alabama/ Penn St. games.

Also, Herbie usually calls the night game on ABC, so if that game happens to be ours (which it should be, not sure of the other games' start times), then it will likely be the host. This happened multiple times last year where I thought better matchups were played that day, but the gameday crew opted for the night game so Herbie didn't have to travel between morning Gameday shoot and the 8pm game.

Congratulations on finding lodging for the game. Now, for one very important piece of advice (at least in the mind of Jasper):

Don't even think of going anywhere near I-94, State Street south of Stadium Boulevard, or anywhere on Ann Arbor Saline road. By my way of thinking you have the perfect point of origin in Canton. I'd strongly suggest approaching the campus from the NE (starting at, say, the Plymouth Road exit of 23) and staying as far north of the nonsense as possible if you value your time. Ann Arbor isn't a big place (100K or so if you don't count the students) and it won't take that long.

As necessary, study the map to make this happen! :)

Would you be averse to walking 10-15 minutes to get to the game? If not, park a few blocks east of State and north of Stadium. That is the Burns Park neighborhood. Position yourself sufficiently (again) north and east of the stadium and you'll get free parking. The walk to the stadium will be very pleasant.

Interested in tailgating? Forget everything I said about parking. Do NOT forget the part about the NE approach.

conor oneils is superb food wise imho. its an irish pub with a good atmosphere and great food. most stuff on the menu is a good choice but the waiters/waitresses can make good suggestions as well

I have friends who work at Conor's and even they agree with me that it may be the worst restaurant on Main Street. I've found it to be glorified bar food with some Irish fare thrown in. I am heavily biased though because I love iced tea and they do not even brew their own but rather use crappy machine concentrate which makes me extremely angry

We are definitely not averse to walking. I actually suggested parking somewhere intentionally far away so we would have to walk and see everything. Everything you all said is great stuff. Extremely helpful.

it can't hurt to mention Afternoon Delight on Liberty at 5th. Doesn't look like much, but any female companions you have along will love it for lunch if you don't mind waiting an hour. The other good places that haven't been mentioned don't have horrendous lines yet usually so I'm stopping at that.

I have to disagree with the people telling you to come here in time for breakfast. That's too early. Unless you love tailgating, you're going to have way too much time to kill. Frankly, I'd sleep in, relax at the hotel, and come into town sometime in the afternoon. That gives you more than enough time to walk around campus (it's not that big), find a place to eat and catch the end of a 3:30 game. If some part of town really catches your interest, come back on Sunday (when parking is free and the city won't be nearly as crowded) and visit it.

No need to hurry to A2 -- the previous poster is correct that you'd be best to sleep in, relax in your room (maybe suprise your wife with room service), then head up to A2 when you are ready. If you take Plymouth Road into A2 (from Canton) you won't have to worry about traffic. Once there, park your car near the diag & The Union (which is the center of campus) & begiin exploring. West puts you downtown on Main street, east is the Arb. Both are a must to see. Division Street is the old divider between campus & downtown, this is where the liquor line used to be. Bring good shoes bc A2 is large and each corner is worth experiencing. Walk south to Hill to see the Fraternities & Soroities, no need to go further south than that bc you'll be headed that way when you go the Michigan Stadium. And you can see North Campus (for which Plymouth Road is it's northern boundary) when you drive out of town. Best idea is to research on the internet which A2 sites you want to see, then plot it on a map so you can hit them sequentially on your walk. Then again, walking aimlessly in A2 is a rite of passage, so enjoy.

a new thread, this seems like a good spot to ask about any activities on Friday. Are there pep rallies or anything like that? Usually we come to town later Friday night but for this game I was thinking about checking out some of the pre-game day festivities. Anything worth checking out?

Broken Egg for breakfast/brunch. Grizzly Peak for Lunch and a beer (or wait forever at Zingerman's). Grab a Jimmy John's sandwich and eat it on the way to the stadium. Then after the game grab a late dinner at zingerman's roadhouse.

Maize n Blue Deli? I've never been but saw it on Man vs Food and it looked like it was worth a visit. Is it one of those spots that locals actually detest?
