Need help regarding First Michigan Football game

Submitted by orillia on
Hey guys- I need some help! My situation is as follows: I live in Oregon and coach high school football. I have two sons who I have correctly raised to be diehard Wolverine fans. October 9 (Michigan State) my high school team has no game so my two boys and I are going to make it to our first game ever in the BIG HOUSE. My questions are this 1) What is the best way to get tickets to the Michigan State game Oct. 9 (I know it is a tall order). Right now I can order 4 tickets from Stub hub- is that the best way to go? $200 apiece in the end-zone. Any suggestions? 2) We want to get a hotel room close enough to campus so that we can walk around campus and take it all in. Is there such a hotel that is close enough to campus that we can easily walk to and from? Will have a rental car but do not wish to drive to the game if do not have to. Do not know if any of this is possible but if anyone can help it is you the MGOBLOG family Thanks in advance

Orillia, I understand the desire not to drive, but you will save a significant amount of money if you're willing to branch out on your hotel search. You can't drink anyways. I'm not too up on ticket purchases, but I'll tell you that end zone seats need to be kind of high up. I was in row 19 at the Rose Bowl, and I couldn't see anything at all. Conversely, I was way up high in Michigan Stadium's end zone, and I could see pretty well.

is too steep for endzone tickets, especially this early. As for hotel think of it as a place to sleep, you'll want to bring the rental car and do some tailgating at the golf course. It is family friendly and a great time.

Should I wait? Will it be possible to buy tickets later that are considerably cheaper? As hotels go- I do not know the layout of the area- only know what I can see from google earth. If not a hotel within walking distance- what do you suggest?

Hotels Within Walking Distance: Bell Tower Inn, Campus Inn. If you call early, you might be able to get a room at the Michigan League. I would only use StubHub as a last resort for tickets. Since the renovations will put seating somewhat in flux next year, you may be able to get tickets through the ticket office if you start searching early. $200 a seat is outrageous, even for a big game.

$200 a piece for endzone seats? Will the cheerleaders be sitting in your lap? I believe this site has a ticket exchange, same goes for gobluewolverine.com, there is a ticket exchange forum. You're much better off getting tix from a fellow wolverine fan. I'd even hit up ebay before going with stubhub.

You CAN drink, just not at the game. There are some hotels and what not in the area, but you'll still have to walk several miles. There are red roof inns and what not in the area that are very reasonable, or, if you want, you could stay somewhere just a little nicer. There's a Kensington Court just off of State St. just north of I-94 that leaves about a 4 mile walk. Closer than that, and you're talking downtown hotels that are usually pricey and business oriented. $200 for end zone seats is... not TOO much for an MSU game, but it's kinda high, considering you could be up in row 90 or something. Try ebay. YOu may be able to score a pretty good deal.

Orilla I am going to bring my kids to the big house for the first time this year as well. You will have better luck going through Craig's list as you get closer to game time. $200 is too much for endzone IMO. As for Hotel...I will opt for something near the airport that has a pool as the prices are very reasonable and then rent a car and park on the golf course. As you get closer to game time I would reach out to the MGoBlog community for a family friendly tailgate as I am sure there would be many on this board that would take you in on game day. Arriving 3 hours before the game and hanging around the tailgate a couple of hours afterward is fun and in the long run the best bang for your buck all things considered IMO. Have fun and good luck-one last thing,,,avoid sitting behind the MSU band in the corner of the end zone. No place for kids.

dude, just get a hotel off washtenaw ave or state st or something. pay some one 15 bucks to park in their front yard. if it's a noon game, take off from the hotel at like 7, go to that sweet diner on industrial. then, head up & park for 15 bucks, walk around campus for a bit and head to the game. if it's a 330 game, head up at 11 and park. go to blimpy, walk around campus a bit and head to the game. get to the stadium early to watch the band march to the tunnel.

Agree with folks about staying at a hotel outside of campus (you will save substantial amount of money.) Not sure if this helps or sounds too risky, but last year I was able to get really good seats for face value (~$75 each) on mgoblue.com for the ND Game. The catch however, is that I could only reserve/bookmark individual tickets. After retrying about 4-5 times, I was able to find tickets in the same Section, same seat, but two consecutive rows (rows 1 and 2). Consequently, the two seats were right in front of each other, as opposed to side by side. Sounds awkward for 3 people, but it worked just fine for me and my girlfriend. She stood behind me... haha. In all seriousness, depending on your section, people can be pretty agreeable. If money is tight, I'd at least visit the website when tickets become available and give it a try. Who knows, maybe you will find a few seats side by side. They even offer "package deals" that might be cheaper than $200 a ticket.

$200 for end zone tickets is far too high; if you're looking at one of the big games then it might be worthwhile. Its still way early to get tickets since they've yet to assign season tickets, wait a bit and the prices should come down to something reasonable - if not, you can always just come out to the Big House on game day; if you hang out around the tunnel to the golf course you'll have no problem finding reasonably priced tickets, alternatively you could just walk around the golf course/stadium (Crisler side) area holding up 3 fingers and you'll find your tickets. (It shouldn't go for much more than face value at most)

Tickets for the MSU game should typically run around $100 each, varying based on the weather, the teams'records, etc. I would wait until closer to the game unless you really want to have that loose end buckled down now. Don't worry about end zone seats. You'll have fun wherever you sit. Recommend staying away from Ann Arbor to get a cheaper hotel rate. Get to central campus 4-5 hours before game time. Find a place to park (not too difficult for $15-20) and soak it all in! Enjoy!

I absolutely guarantee you'll be able to find tickets cheaper than $200. Wait until the season starts, see how things shake out. Tickets float around quite a bit the closer you get to the season. It's still April.

If you're not familiar with game day logistics, stay out near Briarwood Mall (State Rd and I 94)and use the bus system. The Ann Arbor buses run back and forth to Campus and the UM buses will take you anywhere around campus from there. There are hotels and restaurants all around there. They often have shuttles to take you to campus or you can get a bus along State or at the Mall. For the game, I'd recommend that you pick up some subs and walk over to the bus stop at the back of the mall and they'll drop you off on Main just south of the intersection of Main and Stadium Blvd. (It's a free way to park and get to the game easily.) You didn't mention whether you're an alumnus. For tickets at face value, contact a nearby alumni club president, explain about taking the kids for the thrill of a lifetime and ask if anyone can help you get tix. They may know members who have season tix and might not be using them. Or maybe there's a member with some influence who could request MSU tix in the lottery. (The club president and large donors and former athletes often get choicer games.) The requests for tickets are submitted through the club in May and arrive in July.

As a child I lived in Walled Lake. They also have the coolest helmets ever. On the coaching staff here in Oregon we have a Die hard Notre Lame fan- he has been to a few games in South Bend. Another die hard Iowa fan- he grew up there. An Ohio State fan- he was born there. A Penn State fan- he loves Joe Pa, so I am surrounded by Big Ten football. All of us have the Big Ten network etc. Seems every week at a coaches meeting we have side bets about upcoming big ten game......I have been losing a lot lately.

The few hotels that are on or close to campus appear to already be booked for that weekend (quick check on Hotels.com). As others have mentioned it is less expensive to stay away from campus and drive to campus. If it is a later kick off you could park close to campus for a morning walking tour - check out the Michigan Union, Michigan League and the Law Quad - go inside but keep the noise level down. Walk across the Diag (enter through the arch at S. University and E. University). Then hop in the car and drive over to the stadium and park on the golf course for tailgating and walking around the stadium. Check online for additional pre-game activities at Crisler Arena (they invited fans to watch basketball practice before some games last year). Finally, if you really want to stay close to campus check for rentals on VRBO.com. Some people rent their homes/condos for football weekends. Good luck and have a great time.

Absolutely cosign much of what has been said. First, StubHub is a bloated near-monopoly and should be avoided at all costs. Basically, lazy fuckers put their tickets on there and hope some rube is dumb enough to buy them for the grotesquely inflated asking price (and that's before all of the "convenience fees" and other assorted buggering). Do not like. Second, definitely stay off campus. You can get a pretty cheap hotel room either on Plymouth, Washtenaw, or State (three major nodes of hotels) and then either take the bus, or, as several people have said, drive to campus early and take in the gameday atmosphere. I had good luck last year parking at about Main and Catherine, which is a good spot because (1) it's about a 15-20 minute walk to the stadium, (2) it's close to Zingerman's, (3) Blimpy's is basically on the way, and (4) there are some good bars and restaurants close by for after the game while you wait until the traffic clears. Have fun!

Stay at a hotel near the mall - Briarwood mall - and you can catch a bus to the game for $1 each person. You can park at the mall for free. This would be a cinch, and think there are hotels right there.

200 yikes.. we are 20 rows up behind the endzone and the view is ok.. nothing great. But no way would i pay that much for tickets.

as someone mentioned you will not find any tickets more expensive than stubhub. my suggestion would be to buy tickets day of game and the closer to gametime the better. It's very rare that no one is selling tickets close to game time. I've only really seen it for huge games. It will take some courage to wait but it will be worth it.

Ebay is where I got my tickets for my first and only UM game (Appy State :( ). I took our loss as my fault (my bad guys) and have not had a chance to go back (and kinda scared to now). There are several cities around AA where you could save some money on hotels (I stayed in East Lansing...lol). I had one of the greatest experiences of my life and I am sure you will too. Have fun That is the most times that I have ever used ()'s in any paragraph ever.

Football weekends are considered "event" weekends in Ann Arbor. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, the Campus Inn and Bell Tower Inn are the two facilities which are on or very close to campus, but they are, in all likelihood, already full, as are most of the other hotels in town. All of the hotels charge very significant premiums for event weekends. It might be worth staying outside of Ann Arbor just to save the $$$. A short drive in the morning and evening can save a lot of money. One of the great things about football games at most major programs is the energy on campus before the game. People are everywhere having fun. With MSU, there are a ton of MSU students around town and many of them have friends at UMich, not surprisingly. The band does a review of sorts about an hour before game time and then marches to the stadium with a large crowd right behind them. It is fun to walk with the crowd and you get to the stadium early enough to take in much of the pre-game goings on. Regardless, make sure you leave adequate time to get to your seats so you see the pre-game festivities. Here is an interesting link about the band. http://www.michigandaily.com/content/week-life-michigan-marching-band You will absolutely do better than 200/each for end zone tickets. For that price, I would think you would be able to get tickets at the 30-50 yard line and in mid-level rows. My preference is row 20-40, but the Big House has great sight lines from everywhere. Ebay in early August is a good place to start. One other piece of advice, and again, I assume you are not an alum. If you are, I apologize for telling your something you already know. Michigan is an amazing university. When you look at the whole package, academics, athletics and culture, it is one of the finest institutions in the world. To go to school at Michigan is a privilege which will have a life long impact on many levels. Make sure you take the time to really see the campuses, including the North Campus, where engineering and the music and drama schools are located. If your boys are young go into the natural history museum or go to the Union and see where Kennedy gave the speech that started the Peace Corps. Walk into the law school library (quietly)- it is a beautiful room. Visit the Ross School of Business building and stroll around the Diag. You only need to spend a couple of minutes at each of these places, but our campus is a very special place on many levels.

The Holiday Inn on Plymouth Road runs a SWEET bus service, it's like a dollar per person there and one back, but they take city buses and drop you and pick you up right from the gate. I live on Plymouth, and I typically just drive over to the Holiday Inn and do that; it saves tons of walking and time.

I would concur with this. Either the Holiday Inn, or other hotels in this area. You could always also walk to North Campus and take an university bus to Central Campus and walk around (although it's been a while, I do seem to remember these getting pretty crowded). You might also be able to try to park on campus, maybe closer to the northern end of Central Campus, then walk down (it's a couple of miles, but you'll be able to see a lot of campus that way). Even though it's an event weekend, don't forget to check the interwebs for deals on these hotels. The Expedia/Orbitz types of sites don't always have the event weekend details.
