Nebraska vs Michigan GameDay. Some Help with your University is needed!
Hey you all! Long time no see! I've been seeing my family in California this summer and haven't had a lot of free time on my hands. I've been seeing old friends and all that jazz. Any who, me and some friends are taking a road trip up to Ann Arbor for the Nebraska vs Michigan game @ Michigan Stadium and I was wondering if one of you locals could help point out some great bars, restaurants or local hot spots near the campus of Michigan or on it. I've never been to Ann Arbor before so this is my first time and I'm hoping it's a great one! Thanks for the help! :) Oh and what's the parking like there? Is it like really bad prior to half hour before kick off?

There have been multiple threads on all those topics, including an entire post by Brian dedicated to bars and eateries, so I would suggest searching the site for it.

As for parking, what do you plan on doing up until a half hour before game time??? Did you mean "where should I park 6-8 hours before gametime for a great tailgate?" Answer is the golf course directly across from the Big House.

Thank you
so much! :) Don't know why I didn't see this before :/August 30th, 2011 at 6:36 AM ^
Regarding Brian's restaurant listing, pay heed to the comments as his list left off many notable, and very good places to eat. The game time has not been announced yet...might be an early game due to the time of year and the weather we get in late November. If so, you can find parking fairly easily all over the place if you start early enough.

In November. Because it's ridiculously cold at night in November. (Think all those Fan Endurance games...then subtract 20 degrees, and add darkness for the drive back) It may happen, but lights or no, I don't see us playing very many night games that late in the year.

I would count on a 3:30 EST start time.

No I wouldn't worry about parking, you're set about until about 20 minutes before kickoff. And if you're looking for one of the best paces in Ann Arbor to kill time until then I would check out the Mujo` Cafe in the Duderstadt. Best around Ann Arbor.

I'd probably hit up Panda Express and have a picnic in the Wave Field. Catch the Northwood and transfer to the Southbound Commuter to the Box House. Do a keg walk through State and Hoover and see what happens from there. But.. all of this.. definitely after Mujo Cafe.

probably the worst parking of any college football town in America.

lol.. no problems getting out? I take it you didn't go to the MSU game last year?
Took us over an hour and a half to get back on the freeway with the brutal traffic, and all the roads they close off

I've ever seen. How many other Stadiums have you been to in the Big Ten? An hour and a half isn't all that long. MSU, OSU, Purdue, NW, even ND....you spend a long time getting out, and WAY more time getting in than at Michigan.
August 30th, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
I went to the Alabama/Auburn game last year in Tuscaloosa and it took 3 hours to get onto the interstate less than a mile away.

I've been to several Big Ten campuses too, and really, Michigan Stadium is in a pretty good spot from a traffic management perspective, and for all the grief Ann Arbor gets about the parking situation in general (i.e., everyday stuff), when it comes to game parking and game traffic, as long as you don't mind a bit of a hike, it is spread out over such a large area of the southern and southwestern reaches of the city that it has never been a major problem for me.

No tractor parking that I know of, might want to try the golf course. ;)

If you don't mind walking, parking around Hill and South Forest will more than likely be free so long as you're there early enough. Without Googling just how long of a walk it is, my best guess is it would take you no more than 20 minutes to walk to the stadium itself. There are several streets you can park on for free with no trouble at all so long as you're at least 1-2 hours early (Olivia, Cambridge, Lincoln, etc.). As you're walking somewhat towards the Big House you can hit up several bars along South University (Brown Jug, Blue Lepruchaun, or Charley's) and then once you hit State Street you'll have Ashley's (excellent beer selection) and if you go a tad north Buffalo Wild Wings.
As I've never paid for parking whilst attending a game I can't give you too much advice with regard to parking closer to the stadium.
Hope this helps!

I think that's a great post. Paying for parking is ridiculous *if* you don't mind walking and, of course, if you don't see any value in tailgating near the stadium. (Obviously that's an important part of the experience for many people.) Ann Arbor is a relatively small town; avoiding State Street, I-94 south of the city, and (especially) Ann Arbor Saline Road before and after games is the single most important piece of advice I can give. Approach from the NW/N/NE.

Half hour before the game? Yeah, it's going to be a zoo. But I live near the Stadium and I can still get around town and drop things off or picks things up at 8 or 9 in the morning, at least for all but the biggest noon games.

If you want to tailgate, then the golf course area.
If you want to experience a Michigan game day from a student perspective, then follow Fuzzy Navel's suggestion. Both are fun, but if you want to walk to a football game with tens of thousands of people, coming down State Street from central campus, and west across Hoover to Michigan Stadium is the way to go.

When I'm in A2 for a game, I park in the paid structures off Main Street and walk, but WAY before kickoff. There's a lot to see just walking around. If you end up walking down Hoover, stop at Reveille Hall and see the drumline come out. I know you're a Nebraska fan, but it's just an awesome college football experience. The band then comes out and marches up Hoover.

Another cheap parking option if you don't mind walking a bit is the surface lot on 415 W Washington, across from the Y, around the corner from the Blind Pig. It costs $3 to park there. it's about a mile walk south on Main to the stadium.
August 30th, 2011 at 11:27 AM ^
If you park by the Y, be sure to pick up a donut at the Washtenaw Dairy, which is at Ashley and Madison, on your way to the stadium. Best. Ever.

We have a special parking lot for all our friends who own tractors and/or wear overalls. It's on West Shaw Lane in East Lansing. Lock your valuables.
