Honestly what they've accomplished is far more impressive than what Saban has done at Alabama.

Throw aside the fact that they've won five straight titles. Five STRAIGHT titles. It's easy to get kids to come to Tuscaloosa. All the money, tradition, boosters and resources in the world are already in place to make that program go.

Imagine trying to get ANYONE to want to spend four years of their lives in Fargo, North Dakota?

One major advantage they have over other FBS schools is the lack of FCS schools in that area of the country.  If memory serves there is 1 FCS team in Minnesota, 1 in Wisconsin, 2 in Iowa, and 0 in the Dakotas and Montana.  While the top tier athletes still end up at the big schools, NDSU has done a great job grabbing those second-tier players who in a state like Michigan would definitely be playing at one of the directional schools.

That being said their staff has obviously done an amazing job at developing and getting the most out of those players.

So does NDSU become a D1 school soon? Seeing the type of success they've had the last 6+ years it doesn't seem unreasonable. Not that surprised about this upset really.

Chalk one up for Bill Connelly, Iowa skeptic. Last year was a mirage built on luck and a pathetic schedule. Ferentz is still Ferentz. I will qualify that all by acknowleding NDSU is probably pretty decent.

This is what Iowa deserves after signing Ferentz to that ridiculous contract extension.

Now you're stuck in mediocrity for the next 10 years, with maybe one good year sprinkled in. Just so Ferentz can avoid literally getting thrown out of town.

Maybe it's coincidence that we're seeing all these ridiculous upsets or near-upsets the first two weeks of this year. Then again cronyism and inertia haven't gone away. (Clock management by App State vs. Tennessee?) Kirby Smart isn't looking too hot at Georgia. Iowa is still Iowa. Wisconsin and LSU both appear to be mirages in this early season. A&M has struggled early. Oklahoma lost!

Edit: Louisville >>> FSU

Good win for Bison. Like their sophomore qb too. Easton Stick is a great name and he's a good kid. I can see their staff coaching him up better than Wentz. We'll see though.

if they moved up to FBS. I mean Boise has a lot of the same disadvantages, kind of an empty state, not a lot of recruits anywhere nearby, not the most appealing location in the world,  yet they make it work. NDSU could perhaps too.

Minnesota is not a small state --- 5.5 million population, just ahead of Colorado.

Yet, Minnesota is the only FBS program --- shoot, the only D-1 program at all --- in the state.

Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas and Colorado are all (a) non-football mad states that don't have a ton of football prospects, (b) smaller in population than Minnesota, (c) states with 2 FBS level programs, the lower-tier of which (UK, Iowa State, Kansas, CSU) usually isn't good but has also proven capable of showing up in the Top 25 and mid-tier Bowl Games occasionally.

Given all that, I do think NDSU could fare decently well at the FBS level.  I'm not sure they ever make the jump.  But they do benefit from their location (literally right next door to a big state) and the relative lack of FBS programs in that part of America.

Not surprising, but not good for Big Ten relative to the ESPN/SEC "talk track".  These kinds of loses are not good for the conference perception.

Also, Iowa is Iowa, be it North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, etc, they seem to always have at least one of these games each year.

Lol! I mean I suppose technically it is an upset, but in just laughing at how the ink on Ferentz new ridiculous contact isn't even dry. Life, where was he gonna go? They were under zero threat of losing him.

LS And Play

I would rather play a consistent 10-2 MAC team than NDSU. I have no doubt that that team could get to 7-5 or 8-4 in the B1G. They would win consistently against: Illinois, Indiana, NW, Minnesota, Rutgers, Maryland, Minnesota, Purdue.
