As much as I love to hear Frank Beckmann (or Ufer) losing his voice, I prefer this for some reason. H/Ts to bklein09 for posting the link to the audio and MaizeNBlueJ and karpodiem for capturing the video.
Poor Don Criqui. He's heartbroken. Somebody go get Merlin Olsen to hold him
glad i wasn't drinking anything when i read this, or it surely would have come out my nose
Always great when you completely demoralize the other team's radio announcers.
Even better when they allow their own team to demoralize themselves.
I can't believe how meloncholy these guys are right after ND led with 30 seconds to go.
Might cheer him up.
I think it's great that, even with thirty seconds to go and a lead, they were still expecting doom. Really, with what happened the last two years, they almost had no choice. Also, they were correct.
so funny. Anyone from Buffalo listen to WGR550? Sounds like when Greg Bauch does his mock telecast which I also enjoy.
The ref right next to the play throws his hands up immediately indicating a TD, so naturally Criqui declares the pass "incomplete" and that he "has not seen any TD signal". Talk about a complete homer announcer. Pathetic.
Haha, I didn't understand that call at all. You can be a homer and suggest that bad calls are made against your team from time to time, but to initially call the TD incomplete serves no purpose. You still have to call it a TD at the end of the day and you just look stupid.
ya, that was absolutely horrible. what game was he watching that would lead him to believe it wasn't a TD???
Brent Musburger is 72 and Frank Beckmann is so old that Wikipedia doesn't know how old he is, and they didn't have any trouble seeing what happened.
Yeah I remember the one read-option (I think?) play where Musberger was talking about how great of a hit the ND defender had on whatever runningback was in the game as denard was still holding onto the ball.
Speaking of, anyone ever play the Brent Musberger drinking game? Pure genius. http://benmaller.com/2011/01/brent-musburger-drinking-game/
“OVER THE MIDDDDDLLEEEEEE”
Now every time he mentions a B1G school during a non-B1G game, someone has to drink for 12 seconds! Thank you Nebraska. First you give us corn for whiskey, and now you give us an extra second for which to drink it with.
To Nebraska: the start that kerps ouwn gibbiiin......<passes out>
And i'm pretty sure they all have monitors that show the broadcast to see whats going on
SO awesome. All those ND fans wre breathing a huge sigh of relief at the "incomplete" call. For two seconds, only to have their joy vaporize when Criqui flatly announced "Touchdown." So delicious. Scott Tenorman for mayor of South Bend.
because I was on my way home. He is not only a blindingly horrible homer, he has no idea what he is talking about. Right before the game, "Michigan's offense is breaking in two new offensive tackles this year."
I mean, seriously, do you not do any amount of homework?
listening to and didn't have access to a TV. He doesn't even properly describe what is going on. I guess it's hard to speak with a broken heart.
Oh man you got that right. Sweet broken hearts . . . nom nom nom nom
especially the announcer predicting he will run because Denard is a "poor thrower".
He seemed to have a little hope in his voice when Gallon ran out of bounds but then, not so much. That is awesome!! Thanks for sharing on a slow Wednesday.
Who is Criqui's analyst on ND radio? It used to be Allen Pinkett, who has done some pretty good freakouts as when Air Force was beating them for the tenth straight time. Was it Allen Pinkett on this broadcast?
Anyway, whoever it was (Pinkett or other) deadpanned, "Michigan's going to score" as Gallon caught the ball in the clear at midfield. Gallon didn't score, although at the moment I too thought that Gallon, our punt returner fergodsakes probably would score. Wide open field, half the field to cover, with only four d-backs left to beat. I really had visions at that moment of Anthony Carter vs. Indiana.
Speaking of Don Criqui: The real ND-homer radio guy was the predecessor to Don Criqui. Tony Roberts. Tony Roberts was a hundred times more obnoxious than Criqui, who is actually a real professional compared to Roberts. The only comparison to Tony Roberts was that maniac who was the radio voice of the Celtics, whose name I have totally forgotten. Maybe somebody could find and post some audio of Tony Roberts just for the schaden-laffs.
Guy sounds like someone shot his dog. Poor bastard. This had to be the ultimate punch to the soul dong after losing to us in the final minutes the previous two years.
"They're not gonna run it. They have to throw it down by three" ?? No such thing as a field goal to this guy apparently.
...so it was pretty obvious we were going to take a shot at the end zone first.
You're right. Long night/early morning has my brain scrambled. He did make it seem as though he thought Denard was going to run it for the full 80 yards though.
That was gold. The sorrow, scorn, denial, and disgust were thick.
I'd love to see it/hear it
we have gotten into the Domers' head like we were in Penn State fans' heads for so long.
That terrible thrower just tossed eighty yards on your ass in 25 seconds.
That guy SUCKS at calling a game..
I have not seen a touchdown signal
What ... You mean except for the guy in the black-and-white striped shirt with this arms in the air? You know, this guy on the right in the fancy white knickerbockers:
He could have been both more descriptive and more accurate by describing each of the last two plays as "he passes it to the man... and boom goes the dynamite!"
these guys sure sound like they enjoy their jobs. I could announce a game with more enthusiasm with that.
that will never get old.
That "poor thrower" we have in Robinson threw a perfect ball 38 yards, on the run, across his body and without setting his feet. Not overthrew, not underthrew - dead nuts on the numbers, so he could catch it in stride.
The announcers are also mystified by the flag on the play, which you can hear announced as defensive pass interference on the PA system in the background. However, I imagine I would have been pretty distracted too if Notre Dame had done this to Michigan.
EDIT: You can only hear this part on the full version that extends another 30 seconds beyond the youtube clip.
This was posted yesterday as a link to the audio only
The ball is in Rountree's hands 2 full seconds before he says, "incomplete."
.....taken a drunken pee in West Park about midday Sunday, was it?
I know nothing.
That was a horrible job on their part. If I actually listened to this garbage on the radio I wouldn't have the slightest clue what was happening. I feel sorry for the poor souls who had to listen to these guys.
Does anyone have a recording of Beckman and Brandstadter?
You can really hear the effect in the tone and emphasis. There was that prepared spiel about Denard but when Gallon caught the ball, it was a like a gut punch and it was all flat affect, 1000 yard stare voice from there. The last dying ember of hoping and wishing for a penalty and no - touchdown call was the finishing touch.
Unfortunately they were doing the game live. Back when there was the Notre Dame network seen locally on the old TV20 WXON with Lindsey Nelson and his amazing loud sports coats which could blur the old black and white sets, they could show an edited version of the ND Game of the Week and avoid these sorts of slips.
in a working link... youtube or otherwise? I'll settle for just the audio of Criqui
