NCAAFB Open Thread: The Final Countdown

I hate scrolling through long open threads. I'm expecting a bit busier thread for OU/Nebraska. We're starting a new one.

The final three automatic qualifiers are named tonight.

FSU vs VT (-4.5)

OU vs Nebraska (+4.5)

UCONN (+2) vs USF

My picks are above. Jamiemac has upsets across the board.

Discuss.

Tickets to the VT-FSU game

I had club tickets to the VT-FSU game tonight but passed on them.  I hate passing up on free tickets to anything, especially a college football game, especially a conference championship game.   But its 35 degrees and rain/sleet down here in Charlotte tonight.  Good or bad decision?

Won't say it's a bad

Won't say it's a bad decision. My obsession would demand me to go out and watch the game. If I can get to the game with less than an 8 hour drive and someone gives me free tickets, I'm there.

Impressive!

Wow.  That's legit.  They were club seats too (outside, not box).

You should have gone!

There are some awesome restaurants in the club where you can watch from behind the heated glass while chowing on a mound of nachos a foot high and chugging brews.  I take my son and daughter to that stadium for the Meineke Bowl every year and we sit in the club.  GREAT seats.  Once you have club seats, it's almost impossible to go back to the lower/upper levels...  The atmosphere in the stadium is incredible too.   Great place to watch a game.  Next time, go.  You won't be disappointed.

I've been several time and am not a fan. But the club seats may have changed my tune. Dammit.

I hate the Huskers just as much as I did at the end of 1997.  I still cheer when they lose.  Them joining the Big Ten doesn't change that hate for me.

Understandable.

The only reason I am rooting for them is because they are joining the Big Ten next year and having a conference champion join the conference can only make it stronger.

Unfair

It just seems unfair.  That field goal by Nebraska looked like it would have been good from 65 yards.  And we can't even make 20 yard field goals.

Also in the kicking game, both teams have kicked some really impressive punts.  No 8 yarders for those guys.  Must be nice.

Torn on who to root for in

Torn on who to root for in OU/ Nebraska.  My head tells me that it'd be cool for Nebraska to win as a huge FU to the Big 12 on their way out the door, but my heart has never forgiven them for splitting the polls in 1997.

On another note - sounds like there must have been some Sparty's in attendance at UCLA/ USC.  Massive brawl outside the Rose Bowl with 2 people stabbed.

No crowd.

With a Big East title on the line it is a little surprising that there is absolutely no one in the upper deck of the stadium in Tampa for the UConn vs USF game.

lol yeah

They showed an overhead shot and for a second I thought the place was packed.  Then I quickly realized all that red I was seeing was just empty seats (that and the fact that neither team has red in their colors).

DId anybody else watch the Dr. Pepper halftime toss (OK/Neb)?  I've Tivod it, and watched it multiple times... what the heck happened.  The guy who "lost" made all 10 throws, just like the "winner".  Am I missing something?

I didn't watch very closely, but he either missed one or didn't get the last one off, so he only made 9

Tie break.

They had a tie break held prior to the game. The winner hit 10 out of 10. The loser hit 9 of 10

He missed throw #3

My wife and I thought the exact same thing, so we re-watched it multiple times too.  The last time we watched it we noticed that the official's hands didn't go up for the third throw.  It sure looks like the ball goes in, but if you look just above the ball hopper after the third throw you will see the football bouncing off of the ground.  Crazy.

FG kicking

Just saw some no-name UConn kicker stroll on and drill a 50 yard FG.  I get the sense that some of these teams have 2-3 of these guys hanging around that can do that.  Maybe we can just grab one of them.

I like your thinking but what

I like your thinking but what would it accomplish if the MGoCommunity kidnaps a good field goal kicker?  Either way it still sounds fun, so I'm all for it.

Kickers.

It isn't that our guys can't kick field goals. It's just they can't do it during an actual  game.

Nebraska-Oklahoma

There is no pass protection in this game.  A blitz is a virtually guaranteed sack.

I just saw that Martinez has -11 yards rushing on 11 carries. WTF? I thought he was a Denard wanna be?

Well

UConn is a Big East champion.  At least Michigan beat a conference champion, albeit a bad Big East(this year that is) conference.

VT has bounced back in a big way after starting out 0-2 and is poised to finish strong at the BCS bowl.  The defense aren't as good as they usually are but they have a lot of young players playing for them.

Indeed

Indeed.  I've watched alot of college football this year and it seems nearly every team in America has great field goal kickers.  50+ yard field goals all over the place.  We can't even make 20 yard field goals.  This is ridiculous.

It's mind boggling

Every other Divistion 1 team has a kicker that is pretty much automatic from 45 in.  UCONN just became a BCS team 7 years ago and this guy strolls up and knocks a 53 yarder with plenty to spare.  Edsall said he can make 60 yarders. Why don't we have a kicker!

DAMN

Teggart just drilled a 53-yarder to put UCONN up by 3.  It looks like we will have defeated the Big East champion.

So, there's that.  Yeah.

P.S.  I am so damn jealous of all these kickers just booting the shit out of the ball right down the pipe.

he should have walked up to the USF players

and said "What does “53 yard kick good” mean? Is that bad? Did I break it?"

FG Kicking: Part II

no-name UConn kicker drills 53-yarder with 20 seconds left to win the game.

we should be able to get a dude that can do this - it turns losses into wins like a freaking magic potion

Not quite

Apparently when dilithium is involed, a loss is still a loss even with a 50-yard FG kicker

Maybe that's our problem...our kickers have names.

I wonder what our kickers are thinking when they watch all the long and clutch field goals in all the games today.

How much of a kick in the face would it be for TCU to end up facing UConn somehow in the BCS?  I know they're supposed to go to the Rose, but it wouldn't surprise me if the sneaky BCS tried to root out TCU once more.

Allow Michigan to say they beat the Big East Champions and knock West Virginia out of the BCS to a second tier bowl game.  Cheers to you UConn.

Not sure who it was but he

Not sure who it was but he just said it perfectly on ESPN.  Edsall's teams have an amazingly consistent habit of improving through the season.  (witness last year's bowl pasting of South Carolina) .  Tonight was a textbook lesson in how to finish off a game. The only question on Edsall would be recruiting at the highest level.  If you could get satisfied on that you would take him in a second anywhere.  Someone is probably going to.

the brightside of all of this

is that Vince McMahon didn't have to come out and have the ref call the Nebraska QB down on that 4th down in order to prevent the Big 12 title from ending up being thrown into a trashcan on live tv when Nebraska joins the Big Ten

Questions

After seeing UConn win the Big East and get their automatic BCS bid I have a few questions to ask about both UCONN and Michigan:

1.) Were we a better team in the beginning of the season when we beat this UConn team substantially?

or

2.) Has UConn improved alot since we played them?

UCONN really put it together

UCONN really put it together to finish out the season.  They were 3-4, then reeled off five straight wins.  They got some luck along the way, but that's part of the game.

So, to your question, Michigan played its best game of the year against UCONN.  The defense got worse as the year went on, whereas the offense improved overall (though ran into some bumps as guys got injured/nicked up).  Turnovers also became a problem again halfway through the season for Michigan after not being an issue in the early going.

I think Michigan would beat UCONN again if they played today.

Oregon vs. Auburn

Watching Auburn's defense tonight play pretty damn well in a total ass-kicking lead me to believe that Auburn is gonna shit-stomp Oregon.  As much as I hate to say it because of the Cam Newton bullshit, Oregon chances don't look good to me.
