NCAA Tournament - Trimming Down The Elite Eight (Open Thread)

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Two teams will make an exit tonight, but for now, you've got:

Wisconsin / Arizona - going right now on TBS. 10-2 Wisconsin with 16:09 to go in the 1st.

Later on:

Notre Dame / Kentucky - that could be intriguing

Back then yeah Michigan fans were entitled racists. I think the documentary made that fairly clear

If you think most Michigan fans hated our black athletes in the 1990s, you are beyond crazy.  At no point did the documentary suggest that.  It showed some individual examples of hateful letters, but never claimed that they represented the fanbase as a whole

I think it insinuated far more than you want to believe given the way they made the documentary seem like hood vs suburban black people were 2 different types of people. It insinuated that Michigan fans/alums could only stand blacks that were like Duke players (uncle Toms in the eyes of a younger Rose Jackson etc) which the Fab Five were not.

If that isn't labelling the fanbase "as a whole" then it is pretty darn close. Now do I really think the whole Michigan fanbase was racist? No.

The documentary clearly hinted at a significant segment of Michigan not being able to stand black people with individuality without saying it straight up. That is a form of prejudice.

My larger point was that UK used to be notoriously racist since the days of Rupp and that is still evident in Lexington today more than it should be and can be seen at games where there are large swathes of UK fans.

That is what I've encountered and so have many people I know. I haven't experienced that with large groups of any other school for the most part.

So forgive me if I don't have much "common sense" regarding fanbases that hurl slurs my way and at other minorities... who also happen to play for their own damn team!

I'm just curious - are you old enough to actually remember the Fab Five years?  If you aren't, I can tell you that they were enormously popular overall - we set all kinds of records for merchanising sales those years.

Were there people who were uncomfortable with them?  Yes.  Were there some who were hardcore racists?  Apparently - I never experienced that until I saw the movie.  But everything I remember from that time suggests that those groups were not close to a majority of Michigan fans.  And if you watch the documentary again, I don't think at all that Rose and the others are suggesting that.

As for UK, I have no idea what it's like there.  Maybe their fans are racist.  But do not make the assumption that they are just like our fanbase.

Great game.  Hate Notre Dame or not, you have to feel bad for them losing in a Regional Final like that.  Just like us last year.

Losing in the Regional Final is the toughest way to lose in the tournament.  When you make the Final Four, you get to cut down nets, you get a spiffy NCAA trophy, and the whole country talks about you all week.

But when you lose the Regional Final . . . you get nothing.  Just roaring silence, season's over, nice year, see you in December.

It's tough.

Even Kenny just pointed out on TV that ND coach should've at least changed things up with a hard double team every now and then. You can't just sit there and give up that many easy baskets. Take a chance from time to time.

of a game. They don't have a great or even good defense but kept Kentucky below their season average. They took care of the ball and were almost even on the boards. Where they came up short was on 3P. They went 4-14, half their season average on makes and less than .30 for a team that was close to .40 for the season.
