Let's go Crimson! Let's go Zips!
NCAA Tournament LATE NIGHT Thread
to Tommy Amaker and the wicked smaht kids.
anyone know what time um game will be on saturday?
Till the opponent has been determined.
Belmont just went on a quick 10-0 run.
Go Zips, Go fighting Amakers and go Montana Grizzlies. Now that Michigan has won I want some upsets.
Golden Bears are looking pretty good right now
With the news of akron players being sick, I think I rather have them in the Third Round.
And cue the douche negging everyone in this thread in 3...2....1...
says we're not going to play Akron on Saturday. Anrgy Akron Basketball Hating God strikes
For god knows what reason I thought it was a good idea to pick Belmot to make the elite eight. Whoops. Also UNLV is pissing me off.
I feel better now that I only had them winning one game. But damn that loss effected the percentile standings in the espn community big time
I'm lucky in that the games that I've gotten wrong so far I had them losing the next round anyway. We'll see how that goes though...Still would appreciate a miraculous UNLV comeback.
I just don't want to play VCU... I am not saying we can't win... Because, on paper, it's a good matchup for us, but damn I wouldn't mind destroying the Zips.
I say bring on VCU. Let's see them try to press one of the least turnover prone teams in the nation. #EZBUCKETS
Not so late out in Portland, OR. THis time of the year West coast is the best coast.
so true! love living on the west coast. great for football too. late night games don't ruin going out in the evening.
I like Syracuse and have them winning a couple at least. But I think their game tonight will be damn interesting.
I think Akron is going to rally around the misfortune and come out with a win.
MICHIGAN IS ON COMMIT WATCH RIGHT NOW
have them making a run. Not looking so smart right now
I know their D can be trouble, but it really looks like if you keep calm and keep the ball moving forward you can get some easy buckets.
Their defense is terrible if not creating turnovers and I believe we have the least TOs in the country. I think it is a perfect match-up for us.
We haven't faced a team that pressed like this all game. Watching VCU they play fast - very fast. I am a bit more nervous than I was reading Brian's assessment...
Wisconsin presses pretty hard and Burke had success breaking it. The key to VCU will be Burke breaking the press. Color me not concerned.
I meant Indiana.
Pressing teams press usually because their half court D isn't very good.
On the blog for less then a week and I double post. Apologies.
Prediction: someone will vomit on the court tonight.
Coach brown from the M Block says we may have gotten a commit in the past hour and to stay tuned...
Akron is going to lose this game by 20+. They are outmatched
ok, i am officially worried about playing vcu saturday
Why? Based on 6 minutes against an undermanned Akron team?
good shooters. excellent coach. fantastic defense.
we've played undermanned teams and not looked as good.
not that i am picking vcu to win, but i am more worried after actually watching them.
Flagrant! Toss the bum out. A punch to the face then pulling him down midair? Insane.
Herm vs Ted Valentine in a verbal dispute.
Live on PPV.
I think VCU has the potential to get in major foul trouble against Michigan if they continually press.
My god...UNLV let Cal go inside on them at will.
The Cal free throw shooter got his own rebound...that is embarassing.
Let's hope all the VCU players have the flu come Saturday.
I must say, I'm excited about the possibilities of our offense against VCU's defense. We are a great transition team and if we can get Burke with the ball and numbers a few times I feel we have a great chance of winning with style.
I think its pretty safe to say at this point that VCU will be our opponent on Saturday.
Trying to pull of their best Davidson impression right now and give this game to UNLV
And UNLV has a chance....
I swear if Cal blows this...
Is it bad that I'm a little worried about VCU right now..... Naw fuck it
Right now I'm just hoping Akron makes this game semi competitive and wears down VCU.
was thinking the same thing.
number 1 for the zips is excellent. he's their only hope.
Screw you UNLV...
I've noticed that some refs really don't pay attention when teams foul...they obviously fouled but didn't call it and 4 seconds went off the clock. Game's over now.
End of game officiating.
Cal looked pretty solid.
Alright...now I have Montana over Syracuse. Please happen.
i think verne lundquist only knows "beautiful" as an adjective for a good basketball play
wish michigan had as much energy as the vcu guys on defense
Not the best end game strategy or execution by Cal, but they still get the W.
VCU gonna run away with this one. Zips are zippered.
Do we play Burke, alberht/levert, statuskus, hardaway, Robinson?
Also I like statuskus for some corner 3's when we break press
Pretty sure most of the guys you listed don't exist
The VCU press will do that to ya.
Why do 12 seeds beat the 5 so often? It's bizzare.
I think what it shows is that there is just a lot of parity. From the #5 seeds through the #12s, not all that much separates them. Oregon went 26-8 in the regular season and got a #12 seed.
Stronger mid majors/horribly under valued majors against weaker majors and mid majors with shiny records that didn't play anyone. Historically, anyway.
This year it looks more like the committee dramatically under valued the PAC-12.
Akron's starting to chip away. It may yet be a game.
EDIT: Or it may not.
vcu press ok but louisville press is outcold
ok.. i've seen enough of the VCU game.. just hoping that its because akron is not that good
They're calling it really tight early in NM/Har. Seems strange there is a difference even within the tournament crew-to-crew.
Well if you think about it, the crews calling the tournament are coming from all over. Some of our "favorite" guys we're used to are in the tourney.
We will not bode well verse VCU.
We rarely turn the ball over. We'll be fine.
This is the first time I've seen VCU this year. Color me impressed. #30 is a sniper, and VCU is very good at attacking the rim. I think we'll get plenty of easy looks in transition, but VCU seems like a team that won't go away easily.
Keep in mind, Akron has three guys sick with the flu.
Not to mention their starting PG for slanging that reefer
we haven't played a team like VCU this year. VCU will strip any player not named Burke all day and twice on Sunday if they aren't as sharp as they they've been all year.
Actually we have. Arkansas also brings a lot of fullcourt pressure. Our turnover rate for that game (18.8%) was a higher than usual for us, but much lower than what VCU forces (28.7%).
What does Arkansas usually force? Is it close to VCU?
They're pretty good - they force turnovers on 24.1% of opponents' possessions, against a tougher schedule than what VCU faced.
Arkansas forces TOs on 24.1% of possessions, which is 14th in the country. VCU is #1.
VCU does a lot of things that fit right into what we have struggled with - penetration to the hoop and crashing the boards. Take off your Maize and Blue glasses for a minute.
You're only looking at one side of the coin. We're a bad matchup for them. Every time teams have kept their turnover rate under 22% (IIRC), VCU has lost. We have the lowest turnover rate in the country (9.4%). Not to mention that they give up a lot of transition baskets, and we thrive in the open court.
Also, John Beilein is familiar with Smart's press - it's based on what Oliver Purnell used at Clemson, whom we faced in the 2009 tourney. If you recall, we beat that press easily despite having walk-ons at PG.
Also New Mexico also has a fat pasty ginger. Sadly he is not as bad as SDSU's
What would happen?
does the tournament setting hurt a defense like VCU.. the quick turnaround.. only one day of rest between the games?
They play 12 guys, so it's not like they're all out on the floor for 30+ minutes... I think they'll keep the intensity up just fine, just gotta have Burke stay calm under pressure and I could see us running away with it.
Look again at VCU's schedule this year. Most of their 8 losses came on a short turn around. Given their play tonight, we had better hope they tire out.
If I'm not mistaken, they also were in the play in game when they made their deep tourney run and seemed to overcome rest issues then. Granted that was not the same group of players, but their style of play and depth is essentially the same.
better bring our best effort against VCU because Akron is no pushover and VCU is just kicking their ass.
Akron is playing awful. No composure whatsoever.
What game is everyone watching? The VCU game looks less than competitive.
I started off watching that one but have moved on to New Mexico/Harvard. Needing a New Mexico win to get my bracket back on track.
Colorado state game. Ending sooner than the others and still, kinda, competitive.
Who else wants to see a game between VCU and Wisconsin? Just thinking about it blows my mind.
Sure. But not this year.
Bo Ryan would find a way to suck the life out of that match up. He would purposefully take 9.5 seconds to get past half court against the press, then milk the next 25.45 seconds before resorting to a Frank Kaminksy shot clock special.
When is Shaka Smart going to get a job at a big school? And if you are the Northwestern AD or another power conference AD, would you be dangling millions at him?
I have a theory. Brad Stevens to Duke when coach k retires, and Shaka to UNC when Roy retires.
Personally, I'm more of a Brad Stevens fan. Brad Stevens recruits in a tough region against some real powerhouses and coaches up his players. I don't really like the VCU "havoc" defense, as I think it is a little gimmicky and ends up being better in a tourney setup than it does in an conference setup because I think it loses some of its efficacy with familiarity. That being said, both would be great hires, but I wonder if 5* recruits would be that gung-ho about playing in VCU system, as they may be looking for something that translates more closely to the NBA, etc.
He will eventually - he's only 35. But note that he inherited a VCU program that had already been built up by Jeff Capel and Anthony Grant. He's done a great job keeping the momentum they established going, but has never had to rebuild.
Problem is that happened two years ago, and VCU, who has no business doing it with their AD budget, gave him a huge raise . I think a he is around 1.5-1.7 per year. He has a good salary and no pressure, at least not like BIG or ACC type pressure.
Question is, does his system play when he can recruit legit talent? Would they want to play that style? Bballers want to play somewhere that can get them to the NBA on a year or two.
New Mexico's coach just said that what jumped out at him about Harvard's film was how good the coaching was. Mind. Blown.
Their coach is Steve Alford, another B1G washout. Like Amaker, he's done shockingly well in his new job.
How exactly is he a wash out? He chose to leave Iowa for NM. They, you know, gave him money.
And they have been one of the best MW teams the last 7 years and counting. Tourney relevant...
Alford did the same thing Tubby Smith did - leave a school where he was on the hot seat before they could fire him, for a less-prestigious program. He didn't do very well at Iowa. He succeeded Tom Davis, who had them in the tourney pretty much every year, and performed at about the same level as Amaker here.
He has done extremely well at UNM, though. It must be as mind-boggling to Iowa fans as Amaker's success at Harvard is to us.
I had somehow forgotten Tommy Amaker was the coach of Havard. Having said that go New Mexico!
Do not attempt to run with VCU. I know we have great athletes, but this team plays 12 guys every game and just goes all game. You get the ball into half court and sprint back, when we break their press we only take the shot if we have a layup or a dunk.
VCU is very entertaining to watch. I really hope we play the game we want against them because that's the best team I've seen in the tourney so far.
Against a flu ridden Akron team playing their backup PG. Brian says on Twitter he has a TO rate of 46 (!!!!). Small difference between that and Burke.
Even Bo Ryan thinks the Harvard/New Mexico game is boring
Hopefully it's not the VCU game of 2013
Who just died?
That's cruel, Bo Kimble just shot a left handed free throw
New Mexico's fat ginger is impressive.
People need to chill about VCU. Yes, they force a lot of turnovers. They also give up a lot of easy buckets, which is why they are 236th in opponent FG%.
We need to Rebound well on the defensive end so they cannot set up the press. If we do that and not get caught into playing at their pace we will be fine.
They're smoking an Akron team that is short on starters and on bodies in general. I'm not going to worry (too much) until I see Trey start turning the ball over consistently against that D
77-36 with seven minutes to go--jeebus. Hope they are blowing their next five wads here.
flu-like rhea when Michigan is done with them.
In MSU game they were literally grabbing the ballhandlers arms as they drove by. Also, the picks are more like O Linemen engaging rather than a pick. It sure makes for some ugly basketball when the ref's ignore these things and others.
Here is a great look at VCU's ridiculous defense, with GIFs
VCU's diamond press is taken from Smart's old boss at Clemson, Oliver Purnell, who still uses it often in his new gig at DePaul.
Purnell, you'll recall, is the guy we beat in the 2009 NCAA tournament. So Beilein is familar with the press.
The pace of the VCU vs Akron is nuts. I would think the looser, run and gun style favors us, but maybe too much of a good thing?
ok, vcu is good no doubt.
but they are shooting lights out tonight.
better tonight against akron than against us.
no way they shoot this well against us and burke shoots as badly as he did tonight.
beilein will have the boys ready.
my brackets be damned, I love laughing at the SEC's expense
Just saw Tommy Amaker's halftime interview and it bothers me to say I immediately noticed he was sans turtle neck. Did harvard make him give it up? is he a changed man?
His one-man (two man if you count Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) crusade against the necktie, however, continues.
Fucking useless pseudo-scarves.
And looking very good. I thought New Mexico was supposed to be good. This game is a bracket-destroyer!
I always thought Amacker would succeed; perhaps his problem at Michigan was that he wasn't good at recruiting super-studs. I never joined in the Michigan fandom beat-down of Amacker.
So much for the pundits who thought the Mountain West was some sort of power conference.
Amaker recruited well enough. He landed Daniel Horton, Dion Harris, Lester Abram, Epke Udoh, Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims, to name a few. But his teams were always really careless with the ball and also seemed to fade as the year went on.
that didn't mean he was a bad coach. Love that he is doing well in Bean Town.
VCU is up 38 points. Maybe it's time to stop pressing?
I could be mistaken but I think Barkley just said "shit" on the air.
Missouri continuing the trend of terrible postseason play from the SEC.. why, oh why, did I pick a team from this awful conference in the Final Four? That damn Florida pick is going to just ruin my bracket.
It appears that the teams that beat VCU got to the free throw line. That might be one way to slow their insane pace. I don't see how people commenting here could not be impressed right now. I don't care if they're playing a middle school team. These guys look really good.
Anyone else think its a little unsporting that VCU continues to do their mega-press up 40?
i don't know. that's vcu's thing. it's not like they haven't subbed the starters out a lot.
i probably would, but in the end, you don't want your team to take their feet off the gas pedal in the tourney.
It's more than a little. It's a dick move.
It also doesn't seem like the smartest move from an endurace standpoint, even if they do go 10-deep.
What's makes it worse is Shaka is close friends with Akron's coach. I don't get it.
Check out the article about VCU's press that was linked above.
Basically, two players were asked if Smart would call off the dogs. One responded by saying only if they were up big with a couple minutes remaining. The other said they would still press, just not trap, and that he has never heard Smart tell them to stop pressing.
They were trying to hit 50.
It seems like VCU fouls 10 times a possession but the refs can't possibly call it every time. What so you do about that?
They also reach over the baseline while defending the inbounds pass at least 40% of the time. Never called.
Based on Wisconsin, the refs surrender.
I dont normally watch anything other than Michigan games but it seems like almost every game tonight has had a flagrant foul reviewed and called. Here is one now in the Montana-Syracuse game. Is it a normal thing to see this much?
IT'S CALLED HAVOC FOR A REASON. Thats the problem with the society today, everybody want everyone to take their foot off the pedal. No you stop me if you don't, I will score 100 and beat you by 50. good approach Shakain trying to send Michigan a message. I hope our kids are watching .
That's one of the most short-sighted posts I've ever read. There's a thing called pride in the world. You don't gain more by kicking a team when it's down. If you're up less than 20, I can see it. When you're up 45 against an already weakened team, it's just being a douche to keep it up.
What is the message? "We love to embarass teams!"??
I can promise you that Michigan isn't going to be intimidated by VCU running over the Akron JV team.
When you start beating a team by 50, you risk looking like an asshole to the country, which does tend to catch up with you, and you also risk your kids being targeted for some very hard fouls.
Sending a message by continuing to press a team with no starting PG and several team members sick with the flu goes a bit beyond "STOP ME BRO"
Can be a stone cold Internet warrior like you.
Amaker might really pull this off. Can't say I saw this one coming.
The Mountain West hasn't looked too good tonight...
As an Mich undergrad and Harvard grad who has never cheated at either university, dismissal from the university seems pretty serious for cheating, no?
If they have one where you actually sign an honor code, then yes, one strike and your out! Same in the real world. You steal from your company, you are fired.
Please. If 50% of a company's staff was caught stealing you would immediately question the institutional organization of the company. The chance that half of a blow-off class at Harvard came to the conclusion that they should cheat is an indication that the class was constructed in a way that encouraged it.
victorious. Kind of a fun night.
terribly comfortable in his own skin.
"Harvard really relented on their standards for letting people into Harvard and that has changed their basketball program a lot" -- best soft-peddling of letting stupid people in to play sports ever.
Smart is lucky some Akron player didn't put an elbow right in the throat of one of his guys.
Agreed. I think that was a secondary risk of running it up. The primary is looking like an idiot by having your kids play full press while up 45.
New Mexico can't make a bunny to save their fucking lives
So i guess you guys wasn't a fan of the Running Rebels in the early 90's. you can get hurt trying to take it easy also. If that is their style to go full speed all the time, you got to play at that pace. last thing: S-E-C S-E-C
But not as badly as your grasp of the English language does.
How about putting some of that "never stop" attitude into a writing class?
S E C!
White canadians can shoot those threes.
Yeah....my Montana over Syracuse pick isn't happening.
SEC Speed in Football: Running quickly
SEC Speed in Basketball: Getting out of the tourney quickly
I remember thinking i could watch the Harvard game and be in bed by midnight, Damn they milk the ads in the Tournament. It's only obviously when you want to go to bed.
C'mon Harvard - hang on!
Does Doug Gottlieb think ANYONE is good at basketball?
of Doug Gottlieb. Most others, not so much.
How about that number 1 conference's champion? Pretty impressive.
need to come focused and ready to play VCU, if we do that, I really like our chances. Their style might just be a good fit for us.
If we can play well and move forward, that will be a great thing for our freshmen gaining even more confidence cause they played really well in their 1st game in the NCAA's.
For fuck's sake all you have to do is get the ball in bounds
Great job Harvard - Congrats Coach Amaker!
Yesssssssss. Hell yess
Steve Alford: Not a good NCAA Tourney coach
Thanks for NOTHING, Amaker
If i had the points i'd make a thread.
but man, the SEC is just plain bad. Total collapse in SEC for those teams they thought were slighted, and not looking so good after one night of the Dance.
It doesn't really matter what Florida does. The SEC has already embarassed itself beyond repair.
Steve Alford + NCAA Tourney = PROBLEMS
Steve Alford + NCAA Tourney = PROBLEMS
I guess it doesn't matter if they respect your conference (Mountain West) or "disrespect" it (SEC). They both stunk up the place. Although the SEC teams shitting the bed after the UT coach running his mouth makes me laugh harder.
Biggest upset of the night and first ever tourney win by the Crimson.
Illegitimi non carburundum
Domine salvum fac
Veritas non sequitur
Illegitimi non carburundum
has the #1 conference RPI. They have 1-3 record to show for it in the NCAA tourney with a lone win from Colorado State who beat a very soft Missouri. They should bow out against Louisville. SDSU may have a chance to beat Oklahoma but they won't go far in the next round with Georgetown coming up soon if they beat FGCU. That means, they're likely to have a NCAA tourney record of 2-5 which is terrible for the supposedly best conference in the country.
Meanwhile, the computer and humans(except for NCAA tourney committee who rewarded MWC a ton with favorable seedings and punished B1G for beating up on each other) thought the B1G is head and shoulders above any other conferences in the country. So far, so good. MSU and Michigan handled Valpo and SDSU with relative ease. I am expecting all of the B1G team to win the 1st round.
Speaking of West Region, OSU suddenly have an easy road to the Final Four as long as they take care of business.
I wouldn't be surprised if SDSU beat Georgetown.
Happy for him, bummed he couldn't get it done here, but we're in a better place.
And Amaker had a catastrophe to clean up. He did that well.
