NCAA Softball Super Regionals Day 2 (#1 Florida has been eliminated!!!)

Submitted by SpikeFan2016 on

Michigan doesn't play until tomorrow, but if anyone doesn't have Memorial Day weekend plans and is bored at home, there is a lot of good softball to watch (all on ESPN Networks).

  • (Ongoing) #7 James Madison and #10 LSU are tied 2-2 in the top of the 6th inning on ESPNU in Game 1. If Michigan were to make it to the WCWS, our first game would be against the winner of this Super Regional.
  • 5PM ESPN2: #1 Florida vs. #16 Georgia (Game 2). Yesterday Georgia got an unprecedented win in the first game of the super regional by a score of 3-0 in Gainesville. Literally the first time in history a #1 seed has lost the first game of a Super Regional. That means Florida will need to beat Georgia twice in a double header to avoid elimination (second game would immediately follow the first on ESPNU). A Georgia win in either game would leave Michigan has the highest remaining seed in the tournament.
  • 5PM ESPNU #8 Florida State vs. Utah (Game 1)
  • 7PM ESPN2 #3 Oklahoma vs #14 Louisiana Lafayette (Game 2). Oklahoma won the first game by a score of 8-2.
  • 9PM ESPN2 #6 Alabama vs. #11 Washington (Game 1)

Would love to see Florida lose, obviously, and also rooting against the SEC in general because duh.

Update: James Madison defeats LSU by a score of 3-2 on a walk off single in the bottom of the 7th.

EVEN BIGGER UPDATE: Georgia defeats Florida in game two with a 3-2 score on a two out, two run walk off home run in the bottom of the 7th. #16 UGA is the first team to advance to the WCWS.

Another update: #8 Florida State defeats Utah 6-2 in Game 1.

Yet another update: #3 Oklahoma defeats ULL 7-6 in Game 2. Oklahoma advances to the WCWS.

Final Update: Alabama wins in an extra innings walk off against Washington by a score of 2-1.

Teams into WCWS:

  • #16 Georgia (opposite side of the bracket from Michigan) 3-0, 3-2 over Florida
  • #3 Oklahoma (same side as Michigan) 8-2, 7-6 over ULL

Teams Eliminated:

  • #1 Florida
  • #14 Louisiana-Lafayette

Series Scores:

  • #7 James Madison leads #10 LSU 1-0
  • #8 Florida State leads (unseeded) Utah 1-0
  • #6 Alabama leads #11 Washington 1-0

James Madison wins 3-2 on a walk off single in the bottom of the 7th over LSU!

James Madison won despite their starting pitcher going down with an injury in the 4th. Not sure if she'll be back for tomorrow or next week.

Georgia takes a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd off a solo home run!!!

Huge mistake by Florida's defense led to this. Pitch before the batter had a pop up in the infield, but the Gators had a miscommunication and two girls stood there and let it drop. It rolled foul so it wasn't an official error, but the next pitch was the HR.

Go Dawgs?

Georgia takes a 1-0 lead with a HR in the bottom of the 2nd, one pitch after a defensive mix-up by the Gator infield D gave the hitter new life.

Michigan needs to take care of business. Don't need to see a #2 seed lose to a #15 seed. I know the bracket isn't like basketball, but still just win.

Michigan swept this Georgia pitcher and the rest of the Bulldogs in last year's super regional. UGA was seeded higher than they are this year, too.

Florida has been held scoreless for ELEVEN straight innings.

Moving to the bottom of the 4th (Georgia the home team in Game 2) with a 1-0 UGA lead.

Only Florida would tie the game with two hit by pitches in a row (the pitcher was up in both counts with 2 strikes too).

Then a fielder's choice scores another. Ugh.

2-1 Florida.

Top 5th, 2 outs.

loading the bases with one down in the 5th.

I absolutely abhor that kind of shit being OK .

AND IT HAPPENS AGAIN!!???

1-1 TIE.

And now 2-1 Florida .  On pure BS.

Georgia is able to end the inning.

Florida leads 2-1 going into the bottom of the 5th. Georgia really needs their bats to get going. Besides the solo home run, they've been very quiet.

Unf&%kingbelievable.

The SEC prides itself on leading the country in Hit By Pitch. The 2B from Auburn has the career record, and the CF from Florida is around number 2.

Amazing.

Make the call, ump!

I think Florida may have gotten jobbed because I think the first basement got her foot back on the bag in time but c'est la vie.

Go back and count how many wins they get from walking into pitches. It might be legal, but resorting to that is shitty way to win on a consistent basis. They are a great team with phenomenal talent. It's like flopping in the box in soccer. So transparent when they do it...so yeah, they got jobbed. But it is a punk move and it's a huge part of their strategy when the game is tight.
