NCAA responds to DOJ inquiry regarding BCS
I can't believe that there is any way that the BCS is legal.
It's funny in theory it should work but the real problem is it being based on voters favoring the BCS conferences. It seems like the system would allow for the exceptional teams from non BCS conferences to get into the big games and get the big checks but it's the human bias that makes the BCS not work.
Of course, that's in large part because the majority of games you see on TV are from BCS conferences and those are the teams most covered and classically powerful so the voters favor them.
History has shown it's time for a playoff.

These schools get boatloads (metric tons?) of federal cash and some of the schools allegedly benefit at the expense of others in this program.
BCS what's that? I always thought ESPN just went ahead and picked the national champion. I mean how can you ignore all that SEC speed!
LOL. The NCAA admits directly that it doesn't run the BCS. What a joke the whole thing is. For people who keep griping this isn't DOJ business, you are wrong. The current system shortchanges NCAA division 1 schools across the board in favor of a few schools who have grouped up to monopolize a smaller pie.
When you have taxpayer supported institutions across the country trying to make ends meet, and cutting non-revenue programs, you can't also have a system that takes the no. 1 revenue sport and trips over the dollars to fight over the dimes. That is the people's business and therefore, the government's business.
Good for the government here. I hope they rip the BCS to shreds so we can have a playoff like the fans and the sport deserves. Death to the BCS.
Do you really believe that once the BCS is "ripped to shreds," that we will be left with a playoff system? Don't you think instead that after the BCS is "ripped to shreds," we will be left with the bowl system that we had before the BCS?
You know, the one where a school like Boise State would never even have been considered for the Fiesta Bowl. The one where Texas Christian would not have gone to the Rose Bowl in a million years. That one. Or do you hope the government also "rips the Rose Bowl to shreds" and finds their alliance with the Big Ten and the Pac Twelve illegal?
I understand the argument, I really do, but it's not something I'm losing sleep over. I wouldn't mind if this issue were lower on the DOJ's list of shit to do.
My only problem with the BCS is that it claims it crowns an undisputed champion. After 12 years, I don't think it does any better at crowning a champion than the AP and Coaches Poll did in 1997. And given the number of teams in Division IA Football and the disparity amongst the conferences, it doesn't matter what method you use, there are still going to be arguments. If they go to a 4 team playoff, there will be a time when the 5 team will have a legitimate case they got shafted. If they go to a 16 game playoff, maybe that might crown a champion. And you're right, if they dump the BCS, they will just go back to old bowl affiliations...which might not be such a bad thing after all. But that would also mean that the conferences below the BCS conferences would never have a shot at the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar or Orange Bowls.
I see Sergeant Schultz is still alive and well. Either that, or Emmert has a contract with DuPont to coat him with Teflon on a regular basis.
Leaving it up to the computers is wrong too because apparently every computer is programmed to be in love with Oklahoma.
It just doesn't seem like there is a way to do it correctly to get the for sure right two teams in the championship game unless you make them earn it on the field with a playoff.
Still struggling with how to make it work though.
