Providence vs. (3) Boston U

Providence has been in a shell most of the game but just got the games 1st goal. 1-0 Providence with 10:35 to go in the 1st.

Miscellaneous NHL action too. I know Pittsburgh and Boston are fighting for a playoff spot, not sure what else is happening tonight.

Hot team that shouldn't be there always seems to win these things over the better team.

A win for Wings tonight gives them the 6 seed. Depending on tie breaker with Islanders, could get 5.

BU and UM alum here, go Terriers! Tonight is also the last Islanders regular season game in Nassau Coliseum. Always went there when the Wings were in town. A concrete dump with the best sight lines in NHL, you couldn't buy a bad seat there.

I couldn't decide who I'd be more amused with missing the playoffs, Pittsburgh or Boston, but I do kinda lean towards Boston and am glad it will be them. <Nelson laugh>

Now my concern is do I want the Wings to hold on. I don't think they'll get by either TB or Montreal. I'm not sure which first-round loss will be more of a wake-up call. I guess TB. They'll blame a loss to Montreal on otherworldly goaltending from Price, the kind of loss which is hardly a new thing for the Wings.

EDIT: Andersson with the empty-netter as I'm typing!

For those not watching, Providence flipped one up from the neutral zone and BU's goalie caught it but it slipped out of his blocker and went through his legs.

That just tied the national championship game 3-3.

In the frozen four you're only as good as your goaltender on any given night. O'Connor has allowed some terrible goals lately, and his own goal tonight is one of the worst I have ever witnessed. As soon as he allowed that floater to fall in, the game was lost, momentum shifted, and the morale of both teams was noticeably different. Providence deserved the win, and the earned it.

Another confirmation of the stupidity of single elimination in a sport with as much randomness as hockey, but my God what a hockey game.

Also, I could not care less about BU but you aren't human if you don't feel terrible for their goalie.

Interesting how many programs have won their first national title lately...Duluth in 2011(blech), Yale in 2013, Union last year, and now Providence. Ferris State and Quinnipiac also played in the title game.

The B1G seemed like a good idea at the time...but it seems like a lot of smaller schools are better than ever.

This is a radical change from the old status quo; "the same teams playing in the FF every year" used to be a common, if slightly overstated, complaint. I want to say that the last first-time champion before UMD was Maine in 1993, a massive stretch of relative predictability. The improvement of smaller schools is great for the sport. Sooner or later the B1G will be in the mix.

Yep. When you think back to the level of competition in the 90s, the good teams were good, but there wasn't really a middle ground between good and positively terrible when so many top players weren't even thinking about college. Parity is good.

That being said, those 1990s Maine teams with Paul Kariya and company... I'm still sort of pissed about that loss in the 1995 Frozen Four.
