NCAA DIVISION I FOOTBALL COACHES OFF-CAMPUS RECRUITING GUIDE:

NCAA DIVISION I FOOTBALL COACHES OFF-CAMPUS RECRUITING GUIDE:

A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parents, relatives or legal guardian(s) and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue
occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such face-to-face encounter that is prearranged (e.g., positions himself/herself in a location where contact is possible) or that takes place on the grounds
of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college or all-star team shall be
considered a contact, regardless of whether any conversation occurs.

Surely (not calling anybody Surely) it can't be this obvious but the rule seems crystal clear to me.  How can Bama be authorized to practice at and/or contribute anything to Dr. Phillips?  Imagine if you were a athlete at that school and a major program/name was practicing on/upgrading your field.  That is enough to plant a seed...

Of how a bureacracy like the NCAA functions and how the rules are written to be something that require oddles and oddles of people to administrate and enforce and review and argue about what they mean.  No wonder Izzo was so pissed about his recent 1 game suspension.  No common sense rules with common sense guidelines administered by people who are supposed to use common sense judgement.

What can we do about it?

If the NCAA chooses to allow some schools to overtly break the rules, who is going to stop them?

It does undermine their credibility, doesn't it?

And who were we recruiting from Saline? Sheridan was already on our team by then. Maybe there's a reason we played it at Saline and not Pioneer or Huron (two high schools that were closer) in that we were going after recruits at Pioneer (Furrha) and Huron (Jackson) and did not want any inadvertant contact. Not saying that is what the thinking process was, but a possibility.

Guess what. Alabama will say that no "face-to-face" encounter will take place between Saban/his coaching staff and any player at Dr. Phillips.

Per the rule you cited yourself, OP, Alabama is then in the clear.

for thinking outside the box.  "Happens all the time"  I doubt that.  Maybe in the past.  If it happens all the time, schools are putting themselves in dangerous places.  That's like Adam "Pacman" Jones in a strip club or M. Vick at a Dog Show!  Probably places they should refrain from visiting.

Previous Cite: 13.1.6.2.4 Athletics Events Outside Contact Period -- Football and Basketball.   Next Cite: 13.1.7 Limitations on Number of Evaluations.

During a dead period, attendance by a prospective student-athlete at the site of an institution's bowl game practice session may occur only if the practice is open to the general public and the prospective student-athlete observes the practice only from an area reserved for that purpose for the general public. No contact between the prospective student-athlete and institutional staff members or representatives of the institution's athletics interests may occur. (Adopted: 1/10/92)

There are already rules that say there is to be no contact with visitors to bowl practices.  If Alabama violates that rule then bring video evidence and there will be something to say.  As of right now, they are doing something very smart and not illegal.

Michigan is hoping that many Florida recruits come to their bowl practices.  The only difference is that we aren't recruiting anybody in Jacksonville, so we don't have the option of practicing at their high school.

What do you want the rule to be?  No bowl practices that are not on your own college campus?  That would be terrible.  Teams have about a week of bowl activities that they have to do for the bowl organizers and then they wouldn't be allowed to practice.

Edit: Obviously Alabama is practicing at Dr. Phillips because of Dee Hart and Hasean Clinton-Dix.  I'm just saying that this is probably all within the current rules and I honestly don't know if there is any way to legislate against this in the future (if that is deemed necessary).

So what does it say about upgrading the practice field in your Cite?  Plenty of JUCO's around to practice at.

Look, maybe it wouldn't be as big of a deal if Dee (potentially others) weren't so crucial to our class.  So if you're asking me if I think it is an issue, specifically to our program...I say yes.  Do I understand lack of practice facilities etc...of course.  We do have a right to be concerned.

The real question is which mgoblogger in the Orlando area is willing to attend all of the open practices and videotape any/all face-to-face encounters between recruits and the coaching staff?

Do we even know if Alabama chose Dr. Phillips or if it was assigned it by the Capital One Bowl people?

LSU was at Dr. Phillips last year for the capital one bowl. So theres some precedence of the SEC team practicing there. There's a great sportsbybrooks article about this whole debacle...
