NCAA BBall Open Thread: Syracuse goes down, at home, to Boston College

Submitted by B-Nut-GoBlue on

Syracuse in OT with Boston College!!!  Edit: Only one undefeated team remains.

Florida in a 1 point struggle with Auburn Edit: Florida wins by 5, but was a tie game with .20 to go.

Ohio State and Northwestern got into a brawl apparently but Ohio is blowing them out

Illinois - Minnesota is now on BTN.  Ummm, no thanks.

*Yuck. Sorry if that looks horrible, was on my phone.

Illinois / Minnesota is just starting on BTN as well, for anyone who is interested.

Ohio State beat Northwestern 76-60 actually, and Ohio State only outshot Northwestern by 53.00% to 51.00% in terms of effective field goal percentage. However, Northwestern was outrebounded and had more turnovers - actually, NW's A/T ratio ends up being 0.333, but then OSU's wasn't above 1.00 either.

BC, at least the last few minutes and OT, from what I could tell were putting on a bit of a clinic in defeating the vaunted 2-3 Zone (which is good, I don't mean to condescend it too much).

Sidenote: I did not know Laphonso Ellis was in broadcasting (color guy for Cuse-BC game).

due to some of the surprising outcomes, especially road teams winning and the bottom half of the conference winning more than usual. Syracuse and Florida are both really good teams but even they look like crap and have weaknesses exposed during a long season. FLA is a product of an experienced roster and beating Kentucky last Saturday was their only game against a tournament-caliber team since 12/17. This year's tournament should be really interesting.

The really awesome thing is: not actually all that experienced.  259th in KenPom's experience calculation, only two seniors and one junior, accounting for less than a third of the minutes played.  Well-coached, absolutely - the similarities between Beilein and Bennett run deep.

Personally I'm hoping for both U-M and UVA to get the same seed in the tourney and meet in the championship game.  Then I can crack a beer or five, cheer every basket, and enjoy the best basketball game I've ever seen and will ever see in my life.

Wichita State is good, but they've played just five games against the CBS Sports RPI Top 100 (one against the Top 25 -- a five-point win over number 12 St. Louis) and eight against teams ranked worse than 200.  Florida has played 13 games against the Top 100 and only two against teams ranked worse than 200. Its two losses were on the road by six to Wisconsin (sixth in the CBS RPI rankings) on November 12 and by one to UConn (24th in the CBS RPI rankings) on December 2.

Wichita State is eighth in the CBS RPI rankings. That other team in Kansas, the 20-6 Jayhawks (4-4 against the Top 25), has played 20 games against the Top 100 and only one against teams ranked worse than 200.  Kansas is ranked first in the CBS RPI rankings.

Orange you glad that Syracuse lost?

Syracuse is somewhat overrated, very lucky and probably very tired. Four of their five wins in February have been by a total of eleven points. They’ve won eight games this season by six or fewer points. With their next three games on the road at Duke (21-5; 10-3 in ACC) on Saturday, at Maryland (15-12, 7-7 in ACC) on Monday and at ACC leader Virginia (22-5; 13-1 in ACC) the following Saturday, they easily could lose their one seed in the NCAA tournament after those three games.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim almost never uses a deep rotation, relies on the 2-3 zone and rarely presses full court in order to keep his players rested. But against a team that shoots well from beyond the arc and plays decent pressure defense (as Boston College did last night), Syracuse is in trouble, especially when they’re shooting poorly (as was the case last night.) And yet, Syracuse had a chance to win that game in regulation.

They’re now down to six healthy regulars, five of whom have to play at least 35 minutes a game. Six-nine (and seriously overweight) sophomore DaJuan Coleman, one of their three centers, was lost for the season after he injured his leg in late December. Their second center, six-ten senior Baye Moussa-Keita, is recovering from a knee injury and played only two minutes against Boston College.
