NCAA Basketball Thread (Michigan State Vs Ohio State)

Submitted by B-Nut-GoBlue on

Tip off in 10 minutes on ESPN, from East Lansing. This should be a good one and a glimpse into what these teams are really about ("Big 10 play" and all that).

Meanwhile, one of our early season defeats is running the #7 team in the country, Baylor, out of the gym in Hilton Coliseum.

Who ya got, Sparty or the Buckeyes? I'll take Sparty by 11 @ home, I think Ohio may not be as great/good as their record shows.

Literally.  It's a fairly small, not-that-big of a deal, but resetting the MSU shot clock by deeming an OSU player had "possession" when all he did was grab a loose ball in the air that was 2 feet out of bounds and fling it back into the court aimlessly.

I agree with Dakich, I have never ever ever seen that.

This is really not a well-played game.  Lots of sloppy turnovers on both sides.

I mean really . . . Payne throws it right to an OSU player who drives right into him for a charge. Not a lot of basketball IQ on display tonight.

Was kinda hoping OSU pull off the comeback because MSU has had too much joy lately and that makes me puke.

But it's probably better for schedule reasons for us that MSU won.

Yeah that had to be a road loss for Ohio BIG standing wise. When the big guns pick up huge road wins it just makes things way harder. Try not to get too down, things will work themselves out. We are at the peak of the Michigan state rise. Their basketball team is at it's high point and their football team just had the same thing. They will come back down in the next few years.

Fun game to watch there at the end. I thought Appling got some arm on that potential game winning layup, but no way a ref ever calls that in the situation.

My big takeaway: both of these teams are beatable.  Neither one took care of the ball.  Sparty got killed on the glass (surprisingly) but shot 55% from downtown to scrape by.  They won't shoot that well all the time.  It will take a strong performance but we can beat these teams.

to Ohio State based on this game's outcome, despite the Buckeye loss. Have to admit I turned this off after MSU built its huge second-half lead. Very surprised to see the Buckeyes get it to OT. Showed some tremendous fortitude to play through the raucous Breslin atmosphere and come back late. Craft demonstrates what great moxie and grit he has as a point guard. Everybody hates a guy like him unless he's your guy.

What this game demonstrates along with Wisconsin's squeaker win over Iowa Sunday is that every game will be tightly contested. Tonight Wisconsin plays Illinois at home. I can't believe how easy the Badger schedule is, plus they get their first 7 of 11 conference games at the Kohl Center.

Fran McCaffery, who got tossed the other night, has been suspended a game and Iowa fined 10K for his outburst and brush with an officials in MadCity after exploding over inconsistent foul calls. I wonder how the Badgers game will be called tonight? I ought to check the rematch date between Iowa and Whisky.

Wisconsin is now rated the odds-on favorite to win the Big Ten based on its one and done schedule with MSU and Ohio State, the other two top contenders.

I actually think that comeback yesterday masked what is actually a pretty flawed OSU team. They just don't have any players who you can give the ball to and get a crucial basket from. Ross simply isnt that guy. Craft isn't a scorer. Smith is a catch-n-shoot guy. Thompson should be that guy but is inconsistant w/ a shakey jumper. If one of those freshmen develop, maybe, but right now, they don't have it.

They'll be in every game because of Matta & Craft (who is dangerously creeping up my alltime hated Buckeyes, respect the hell of him tho), but not having a player like Thomas from last year will kill them in the long run.
