NCAA Basketball Championship Game Open Thread

So it's evil vs.....less evil? Annoying? Just blah? Two storied programs going at it, so it has that. Maybe a good game. Though Calipari would really have to Calipari it to not roll this Jayhawk team. Oh well, if Kentucky wins it'll probably be vacated before this thread ends. I suppose Kansas winning could flip some pool final results. Kentucky winning, not so much.

On the other hand {knock on wood} if KU can continue to slowly sneak back into this {knock on wood} the noose is going to tighten around Calipari's neck {knock on wood} and his deficiencies as an in game coach {knock on wood} will start to show.

If UK were to actually lose {knock on wood}, the schadenfreude would be amazing.

Agreed... just don't think KU can keep up offensively and the not calling obvious fouls on UK isn't helping much either. Those last two 3's don't help.

At least I can always looks forward to this championship being struck from the record books in 3-5 years.

After the 3 hour halftime we still need commercial breaks every 2 minutes. One Shining Moment is going to be at 3 am.

Watching that ad with the Laettner game just underscores how much the one-and-done rule has hurt college basketball.  The level of play is so much weaker now.  Kentucky started out 3-14 in the second half and still led by double figures.

Why?  The Fab Five basically was the equivalent of this year's Kentucky, and we lost to Duke by 20.  The level of play back then was far higher.  Duke wasn't exactly a slouch.  They had three NBA lottery picks (Laettner, Hill, Hurley) on that roster and none was a freshman.  That's the difference: back then, the Final Four teams were all loaded, but usually they had upperclassmen starting.

And Hurley was a great college PG, I think the accident helped cover up what an NBA bust he was going to be. Drafted too high. Stockton or Nash he wasn't going to be. Didn't have their athleticism. Or Karl Malone.

Before the car accident. Or frankly, in college, where he was more an assist man than some scoring force. That was the same hype mentality for everything Duke that put his teammate on the Dream Team instead of Shaq as the college representative. And in any regard that's still miles away from one of the all time greats.

Hurley only played 19 games as a rookie before the car accident, so it's not really fair to evaluate him just based on that.  Nash and Stockton didn't do much as rookies, either.  We'll never know if Hurley could have made a big leap in performance if he'd stayed healthy.

In any event, Hurley was a really, really good college player.  His senior year he averaged 17.0 ppg, 8.2 assists and shot 42% from downtown.
