NCAA Bans on-field hashtags

Submitted by Fort Wayne Blue on

so I guess this is the Dave Brandon Rule?!?!?

"...it was revealed Wednesday that the NCAA has ruled that hashtags—like #NCAA—would be banned from the field of play because it can be used as advertising.

The only permissible markings are NCAA, conference and team/universities logos, the name of a commercial sponsor with naming rights and for a postseason game, the name/commercial logo of the title sponsor associated with the name of the postseason game."

But what hashtag should I use to join the discussion about college football? I love using #dwts and #the6ocklocknews and #cjdidnotk5h and other hashtags to communicate with the world. #oldfashioned

I am fairly young, somewhat hip, and I know how to use twitter. I will never understand when # became a hash tag and seemingly lost its traditional title of pound sign given to it by every adult in my life from the ages of 2-8? I want to say this was discussed before, but I truly do not remember he answer. Is it really not a pound sign? If so, my grandmother and every other relative I used to bother lied to me. Worse than Santa.

Twitter didn't make it a hashtag. Computer programming did that. Twitter just had the great (and simple) idea to set that up in their user inputs. That's a really easy rule to code. I never thought about that before. The modules for making things trending and so on are difficult, but shoot, you could probably code that with about 10 lines of PHP.

Speaking of advertising, why is it that jersey manufacturers can put their logos on the front of college jerseys in all sports, but in pro sports they have to be hidden on the sleeve?  Shouldn't the "amateur" NCAA try to keep that bit of corporate-ness a little more discrete?

English option was turned on, our work voice mail asked us to enter our PIN and a hash.  Otherwise, might never have known about this terminology for "#" until the twitter era.  In America, it should be poundtag.

"It’s not all bad. The NCAA is now kind enough to allow a manufacturer’s logo or trademark to appear on each pylon." - from the Sporting News article

I suppose you can't have everything, but someone will manage to create a situation where we will eventually hear, "The end zone pylons used on the field today are sponsored by Stouffer's.....Stouffer's, where every touchdown should feel this good."

People are saying the same things about FB that they said about MySpace a few years ago.  So, now, things like pinterest are popping up, trying to be the next hot social media outlet.  Twitter is brilliant for numerous reasons, especially the collective short attention span, and should overtake FB.

When enough people get angry with FB, they will go elsewhere.  FB has already had a long shelf life by internet standards.  I personally thinkFB is too cumbersome to navigate smoothly, and the ill will from increased advertising is going to drive people to something that is a bit more elaborate than Twitter, but not as mechanically idiosyncratic as FB.

The thing I dont understand is that FB had it right before with sequential posts.  They unveil Timeline and now its a multi branch tree with collapsed posts and what now so you cant even follow a conversation.  Then they do something smart and make it sequential again, but instead now were going to do promoted comments.  WTF guys, your seriously overthinking this.  KISS=Keep It Simple Stupid, I seriously think the Zuck has a lil bit of Lucas in him and is always going to be tinkering and screwing it up.

(I cant believe I just ranted about FB for a paragraph, I'm going to read a Fed. Reserve press release now to try to bring back those braincells)
