Im pondering going out and picking up NCAA 13 tonight... Wondering if I'm the only nerd contemplating this.

i think I have the last three. Until they use the same gameplay engine as Madden I'm not going to purchase it again. It's asinine how much smoother Madden is to play.

I agree - we can complain all we want about how NCAA "doesn't change that much" (which is true in certain versions, although I would argue last year's was a significant upgrade) but at least they don't ruin their game like Madden.

I think each year one stands out as being a much better version of the other.  Madden 11 was great, while NCAA was poor.  I still play NCAA 12, but gave up on Madden 12 after about a week (dynasty mode is fucking terrible).

...but you're crazy if you think Madden is smoother. I hate the Madden games and I think they're MUCH harder and just way too realistic. It's a video game and supposed to be fun. I don't have fun playing Madden. The first and only time I bought Madden was the 2005 version on Gamecube and I sold the game back to GameStop about three months later. I hated it. Except for last year's version, I have purchased the game every year since the 2003 version.

that is what the Freshmen difficulty is for. Not to mention the various sliders that can be adjusted to make certain parts of the game easier or harder based on personal preference. Personally I like realism in sports games. This is why the only sports game I have been able to  consistently enjoy the last several years is MLB The Show.  It's basically the only sports game that comes anywhere close to it's real life counterpart.

As for  NCAA, I am taking a wait and see aproach this year. I'm not going to get suckered in again this year, in terms of buying on release day. I'll wait for some honest opinions from people (not biased reviewers) before deciding. At least from what I have seen it doesn't look the gameplay additions are that sigfnficant, instead EA sports would rather focus on adding gimmick modes that I would never use.

I wish they'd make the game better instead of putting Desmond Howard on Ohio State

...though I may still buy the game. Why does EA get the only rights to NCAA football?

Wolverine Devotee

Because they got their ass handed to them by 2K when they put out NFL 2K5. One EA employee said "it scared the crap out of me it was so good".

So if they can't beat them, what do they do? Take the cowardly way out and buy the rights for NCAA & NFL.

The year the contract was offered to EA by the NFL was the year 2k put out their sports games for $30 dollars brand new. The NFL felt insulted that they would market their brand at such a low price point. So they approached EA and EA took it. I would rather have the competition as I think we all would but ultimately 2k shot themselves in the foot.

Preordered via Amazon and it will be on my doorstep tomorrow after work. No point in rushing to get it until the rosters are done, IMO. I am also OCD and edit equipment, ratings, sliders, etc. before I really get going into dynasty mode.

I used to obsess over having all position groups having the same equipment, but I got so sick of doing it, so I quit doing that in the 2006 version. It's a lot of work. Regarding player ratings, I will be making Denard faster because I don't think EA did him justice.

Although I am not joining you this year. Pre-ordered from Amazon for 45 bucks, and it is supposed to be dropped off tomorrow, about the time I get home from work. Woot!

You must be going to a different store because GameStop said they aren't having a midnight release for the game this year. Perhaps that is just the locations near me in Ohio. I ordered mine from Amazon anyway for $45 out the door.

You don't need to go to a store with a midnight release party.  Just head to a Walmart or Meijer and they stock the shelves with the game at midnight.

I didn't preorder but I used the season ticket from FIFA to play it for three days. As it stands, I like it and would pick it up except for one huge bug. The game keeps freezing when I am loading my week 5 game. I have seen multiple reports of this in my dynasty.

I know I can sim, but that doesn't remove the problem and any random week could freeze, thus killing a dynasty. If they fix this, then I will buy it, but as it stands I am not going to.

Not going to buy it this year. Sounds like the gameplay is going to be basically the same as last year. I already updated the rosters on NCAA 12 to be accurate for this year.

Demo showed me a few things they changed: receivers actually look back for the ball and are more acrobatic. Also, on slants they get upfield much quicker. There also is more time and protection in the pocket to let routes develop.

The Air Jordan LB's have been fixed.

The zone read is MUCH better as well. That was the biggest frustration for me the last couple years.

I did it once in my life....and when I got to the store I saw dudes in their 30's wearing their jerseys and talking about getting 5 or 6 seasons in tonight.

I then put my head down in shame and vowed to never do it again.

OMG what tools. I can honestly see that happening.

The only time I went for a midnight release was Halo 2 a long time ago. I played the game through until noon the next day and beat it.

But you played from 12 to 12? What happened to the other 7 hours?

And it was probably a bit of hyperbole...you couldn't play 5 regular time full season in a day.

I played the game through until noon the next day

So while you may have meant that you played the game all the way through, playing till noon, it kinda looks like you said you played all the way through till noon.

lmao i'm in my 30ies and I went to a midnight release for Harry Potter and the deathly hollows. ( book not the movie).

I wouldn't say our venture into nerdome was as bad tho because you didn't dress up like Master Cheif and I didn't dress up like Harry Potter.

Nothing wrong with midnight releases.  I've done multiple Harry Potter books, COD games, Battlefield 3, Halo(s) etc.  the best is taking the next day off so you can just stay up till 8AM and have the campaign finished before you knock off for a couple hours.

I still have my NCAA 2004 game for X-Box.  I stopped buying them after that but I admire the upgrade in graphics over the years.  It's nice that the team actually touches the banner now.

MGoBirthday is in two weeks and I've been getting the game since 1999 as a gift so I think I'll hold off.

In many years I actually am not going. I am usually chomping at the bit to go. I always have tonight circled on the calendar but this year is different for some reason. Actually forgot about it until I saw this thread.

Meh. Work tomorrow. Just go pick it up after work tomorrow :) No point waiting in line

This might also be the first year I get in on the fun, since 2006. I wonder what online play is like. I've always been curious to go up against Mgobloggers in online battle.

The only reason why I am considering getting this game is because of the improved catching motions and lack of jumping LBs. That and I think they fixed the play-action DOOOMMM thing. The tackling in 2012 is hella realistic, but the catching/interceptions/passbreakups were terrible. Straight up terrible.

So in short, adding better catching + new uniforms + glitch fixes = me buying it.

Not to drive traffic to another site, but the impressions at Operation Sports have ranged from okay to awful, specifically that the option offense still doesn't work, the safety play is atrocious and allows for anybody to throw for 500+ yards with deep balls, and the computer runs screen passes way too much and just get sacked over and over and over.

Combine that with the lack of new features (minus the despicable Heisman Mode, which is so stupid it created its own black hole of idiocy) and I might pass on the game for the first time in years.

July 10th, 2012 at 12:27 PM ^

I think he was talking about the "LOOK, DESMOND HOWARD IN AN OSU UNIFORM! GIVE US YOUR MONEY AGAIN!" game feature.

I'm officially boycotting EA football games this year until they actually change them for the better. NCAA games have the same glitches year after year, but at least you can play mascot games and shit like that. Dynasty Mode is the same thing and Campus Legend/RTG gets worse every year. I'll save $120 every year and skip out on their updated rosters and new covers. Oh, and both game's commentary are atrocious.

ixcuincle

July 10th, 2012 at 12:44 AM ^

Heisman mode sounds boring. All I want to do is run a dynasty. And, when that dynasty becomes too good, leave for another team and work them up to a dynasty.

I'll be fine with the game if I can hop from team to team like a football Larry Brown.
