NC Residents: Get U-M License Plates!

The U of M Club of Charlotte and the Michigan Triangle Alumni Club have been working hard at getting specialized Michigan license plates.  We need to get 300 orders for plates before the state will start production and are almost there.

Below is the official information and the link to the formal application.  If you are so inclined, please do not hesitate to order!  I think Michigan might be the only truly out-of-state plates to get issued here in NC - they have Clemson, South Carolina, etc. but nothing as far as Michigan to the best of my knowledge.  Pretty cool!

UM License Plates

Interested in a University of Michigan license plate for the state of North Carolina?

We are partnering with the Michigan Triangle Alumni Club (MTAC) to offer University of Michigan license plates for your vehicles in the state of North Carolina.  We are accepting applications and deposits for the plates.  A regular UM plate is $25 and a personalized UM plate is $55 (please note that personalized plates are available on a first come, first served basis).  The link to the application form is below.  The completed application and check* or money order may be sent to:

U-M Club of Charlotte
1932 Summerhill Drive
Charlotte, NC 28212-7140

*Make checks payable to U-M Club of Charlotte

All checks will be deposited into a club account and held strictly for license plates. When 300 paid applications are received, license plates can be created. DMV will then either issue the plate to you or will contact you directly with information.

considering they don't seem to me to be that common in the Indianapolis area.

But apparently you weren't hallucinating: they're also available in Delaware (??), Pennsylvania, Maryland, Tennessee, and Texas.

What's interesting is that most Big Ten states, including Michigan, don't allow out-of-state plates (Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana prohibit them as well), so maybe that explains why they're elsewhere - schools can focus efforts on fewer states. If Purdue can round up enough interest in NC, certainly Michigan can as well.

They went out of their way to exclude out-of-state schools:

  1. 1)  The group shall be based, headquartered or have a chapter in Indiana;

  2. 2)  The group has made broad and significant civic, community, and charitable contributions across and exclusively in Indiana, or are descendants of native or pioneer residents of Indiana under IC § 9-13-2-170;

Anyway, they've been trying to push a bill to kill off most specialty plates as it is ... while it would make sense to offer more (and thus collect more revenue), it's unlikely to happen, especially with no surrounding states allowing out-of-state school plates.

On a separate note, any MTACers going to the Gerald Ford movie screening at Raleighwood next week? Here's the info:

They are considered "personalized" so its an extra $25.  Registration is pretty cheap down here but then we have automobile taxes to pay, which suck if the car is new.

Their costs $1 more per plate.  I wonder where that extra money is going??!!  Bama fans in NC, you better ask some very serious questions of this Kim Hendricks in Greenville, NC.  Rumor has it that she's using the extra $300+ dollars to feed her addiction to Krispy Kremes . .
