Trey Burke and Brandon Knight? What a sweet young backcourt to move forward with. Toss in Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond, and they can make some noise.

think he is terrible, he is just a complimentary player with nothing to compliment.  Knight is the kind of player that you have to give the formula too ahead of time.  If the rest of the ingredients are there he will be an awesome flavor, but he can't be the centerpeice of the caserole.

I'm really hungry.

Well, I hope you find something that tastes better than Brandon Knight's basketball ability. Errr, I think I took this metaphor too far.

Anyways, if you look at his stats, it's unclear what skills he has that are complementary. He's a decent 3 point shooter, but that's about it. He shoots 41% from the field, turns it over 17% of the time and assists 21%. And his advance stats are pitiful. He just doesn't contribute much.  That's not to say he couldn't improve, but based on his college and nba performance to date, it seems unlikely. He's basically been an inefficient scorere who's turnover prone his entire career. No thanks.

that a strictly statistical analysis like that is overly symplistic.  I think he could be a key player on a good team.  The Pistons just suck, like really bad.  Knight is a 6'1 scrappy scorer, he can get his points but the points just never mean anything because they are getting the shit kicked out of them all of the time.  I conceded that he is not a stand alone impact player, but there is no reason to think he cannot be a Jason Terryish kind of asset.  I would not write him off yet as useless.

He'd probably be really good in that role, able to fill in at either spot.  His A-TO ratio isn't good enough for a 1, and his size isn't good enough for a 2.  But as a 6th man type he could be good.

is kind of the primary problem that I am having with the idea.  At some point you have to look at the parts you have and what you need and I am just not sure the Pistons can afford to draft a point guard.  True, if you have 4 point guards you don't have a point guard at all, but the Pistons just have a lot of players either playing or that can play that position.  I think Burke is going to be a solid pro, but is that really what the Piston need the most.  I think they need a wing that can score and defend like the desert needs the rain and I just can't see them going with a undersized point guard in this draft.  AmIright?

This line of thinking would be acceptable if the Pistons were anywhere close to good. But when you're a lottery team, you don't draft to win now.

None of the Pistons backcourt options are good enough to justify passing up the BPA at #8, and if Burke's available at #8, he's definitely going to be the BPA. The only two players the Pistons should be building anything around are Monroe and Drummond, everyone else should simply be looked at as potential trade bait.

Shouldn't they take a player who could be, you know, good, at another position than just a bum at a position of need?

I can't argue with that.  But there has to be somebody, like somebody with a versatile skill set that may be available.  I haven't opened the link, it Oladipo gone before 8?  I a guessing yes.  I just have a problem with continuing to collect point guard like substances when John f-ing Stockton could not turn this team into anything not shitty.

Maybe it's Burke. Maybe it's a guy like Oladipo. Maybe it's neither or none of them and the Pistons are just screwed.

Great for his closest fans to see him more in the Detroit area, but until they get more talent on that team, I'd hate to think what this would do to the beginning of his career.  I suppose being a high pick he's going to end up on a struggling team anyway...but like I said, I'm torn.

Have you taken a look at Orlando's roster? Pistons have a world of talent compared to the likes of Orlando, Sacramento, and Pelicans. Drummond is going to be an absolute monster... If they do draft Burke I think they'd be one or two pieces away from seriously contending (say a good wing who can stretch the floor)

I haven't paid a lot of attention since their first losing season a few years ago.  I have only so much room in my life for sports, and since the Tigers got better a number of years back, I've lost interest in the Pistons.  I hate to be a bandwagon fan, but for my money NCAA basketball is much more fun to watch than the NBA.

All that said, I do want them to get better and contend for a playoff spot.  I'll always root for them, winning or losing, but I won't pay much attention until they're winning.  If Trey got drafted by them, I would definitely watch them a lot more.

Pelicans...

I did say, "these days."  Karen Davidson broke us down and Tom Gores doesn't seem to care whether or not we win as long as he makes a profit and Joe D has lost all his competence.  Of course they have a better history than the Lions.  However, in the future the two teams will have similar success.

Of course, it's much easier to turn around an NBA franchise than in the NFL since one superstar can make the difference.

The Spurs are really the only team that's had sustained success over the past 10-15 years in the NBA. NBA is the most cyclical pro sport by far - only five guys on the court at one time. One superstar makes a huge difference.

Thw worry is that it was the Pistons "anicent ownership" that was actually good and the new ownership that is suspect.

I am kind of hoping that either Charlotte(#4) or Phonenix(#5) falls in love with Noel or McLemore and trades up with Orlando(#2).  Orlando's biggest need is PG but looks like they are hesitant to take him at #2.  If this doesn't happen Burke should be off the board at #6 or #7.

Some people consider Burke a poor man's Chris Paul, not an unfavorable comparison if you are a PG. I think with the right cast of players, he could rise to that level. Burke has the drive and skills to be a star, and I would love to see him as a Piston. Sure, Dumars has done pretty much nothing right since 2004 but if he grabs Burke, I might just start watching more games.

...what I've been saying.  Maybe I should be an NBA scout.

An undersized Big Ten point guard who leads his team to the NCAA finals and then enters the draft?  Tell me this isn't the second coming of Isiah Thomas.  That turned out pretty good for the Pistons.  Combined with young big guys like Drumond, I'd be pretty optimistic for the Pistons future if they get Burke.

But let's not get crazy and heap unrealistic expectations on him so he's doomed to fall short. Zeke was one of the top 20 basketball players of all time. I think Burke could be a good starter, but I'm not putting him into the Hall of Fame just yet.

I've wanted Trey since the start of the season, pretty sure he could run that high pick n roll with Drummond at least as good as Bynum has...with better decision making...and a jump shot.
