That's good advice, thanks
National Championship Game Open Thread
desire to offend. . .
And both these teams have great defenses. They have great team speed and play fundamentally sound. But the offense are average at best. Their route combinations are extremely simple and easy to cover. Their RBs are missing open run lanes that could go for 5 yards instead of 1.
I'm not saying there should be a bunch of TDs in this game. The defenses are too good for that. But the offenses should be far more efficient in this game. They should have been in the last game. They are missing opportunities and have very simple offenses because they rely so much on their defenses and are scared to make mistakes against the other teams defense and it's making the offenses plain and ineffective when they could and should be playing better.
GREAT point. And that's the issue. I don't think anyone would be dissapointed with a 14-7 or 21-14 game if the offenses were reasonably capable of moving the chains. This is just absurd.
I started the post...and not to make fun of it.
But what's mystifying is the need you feel to post after every slight to the game to say how awesome it is. And it's been the majority of your posts for a month. If you have no rooting interest, you're caring about it way too much. Maybe boards aren't that much fun for you and you're wasting your time.
they are missed. The D's are amazing, but the O's are playing like crap.
And it's not necessarily due to the defenses, as that last gaffe by Jefferson shows.
I know this is a chicken-and-egg question, but the more I watch these offenses the more I wonder just how good SEC defenses are. These QBs can do absolutely nothing.
LSU is just playing the same strategy we played in the Sugar Bowl, minus the turnovers in their favor.
..lack of skilled offensive players? WV got 21 and Oregon got 27 against LSU this year..Bama has 15 in a game and a half.
How did I know that there was gonna be a commerical about the SEC winning 6 NCs.
"You're watching six". The funny thing is, they techinically get a loss to their perfect NC game record regardless who wins.
That commercial was pure arrogance.
I still think Brandon is a greedy fool for scheduling Bama to start off the season. With the medical hardships and oversigning, they will be loaded again.
But what if we beat them?
you wanna be the best you gotta beat the best
Alabama is in trouble... Any time u dominate an entire half like that and only have a 9 point lead you can't be comfortable. LSUhas been in this position a number of times this year.
Except that Jordan Jefferson is LSUs QB.
to place some big bets on your assertion. LSU is toast.
is hilariously classless. Compare B1G commercials (we mold excellent young people and o by the way we're pretty dang good at sports too) to that SEC commercial (we've won 6 MNCs in a row; bow to us, peons!) and you'll see the radical difference in cultures.
Honestly, most of the schools in the SEC don't have create academic resumes - I've watched those school-made commercials enough this year to realize "I came from a small part of Alabama and look at me in school" is the one consistent narrative that many of these schools have to fall back on.
I must have missed that commercial when I fell asleep . . .
Nich Saban is balls deep inside Herbstreit? I swear Kirk wants to have sex with this guy.
The SEC totally mushroom stamped the entire CFB nation with that halftime commercial
Who's the third halftime guy with Fowler and Kelly? Recognize the face, just can't place a name to it.
Gene Chizik, Auburn's coach.
lets see he faced Kelly on the game last year, hmm Gene something......
The production value looks like an online learning center, however.
Jamarcus likes purple
is 3rd guy
people will call him the former coach of the Auburn Tigers.
Unless he buys, er, recruits a superstar quarterback.
is more entertaining thant the game.
Again, these defenses are really good. And by that I mean great. Great enough for them to be legit ranked #1 and #2 (though I think Ok St. should have played LSU). But the offenses are missing a lot of opportunities and running lanes to make plays. They are both leaving a lot of yards on the field.
field goals are not compelling TV unless the game is on the line. That goes for both the game and that lame ass halftime show.
If he made it he should win the Alabama starting kicking job
Other than the obvious answer that they are just plain awesome can somebody explain why when two SEC teams run God-Awful offensive plays and cant score worthe a shit its claimed that it's just because of the amazing defenses but when WE struggle offensively it's because our offense sucks?
See: Big Ten playing bowl games.
curiously similar to Go Blue Wear Maize!
I would have worn a Georgia or Stanford jersey and taken a knee before I kicked
Saban's wondering if it's too late to cut him
...will he have a scholarship by the 4th?
He looks like he should be borrowing his dad's Ferrari for Ferris Bueller.
Mad Hatter going to have to figure out a way to score some of those point thingies.
Haven't seen a single Bama ball carrier who isn't hanging on to the ball as if his life depended on it..an obvious point of emphasis..LSU won many games by forcing fumbles-int-special teams play
watch the game? If they start hurry-up, then quit with all the replays and the stupid logo that blocks the whole screen for 5 seconds.
Am I the only one that would rather watch Bama's kickers practice field goals for three hours than watch this shit?
So both of these teams have put up points this year vs other teams. I get that but did they score most of their points on defense and special teams? I don't care how good these defenses are, the offenses are just plain awful. Why don't they recruit QBs?
That is all.
Bullshit. Saban is the devil.
Giving credit to LSU for giving up yards but not touchdowns! Seem to remember the Sugar Bowl playing out the same way. Yet we were getting dominated on both sides of the ball by VT. Why is this guy still on tv. Ughh.
Still, it's better than Millen or Spielman.
Question is starting to become whether LSU will even score
#1 QB recruit going to LSU
Jordan Jefferson is not good.
It's the "Season Ending" Award that they're playing for. Good call.
Deer in the headlights from Jordan Jefferson.
What are the chances the LSU boards are exploding with the "we already beat these guys, this is bullshit!!!"?
That's a loser attitude.
But a legitimate excuse.
I'm sure they are, and it will be even louder when they lose and people note that the series between these two teams is now tied at 1-1.
If nobody gets a TD. Again.
I wonder how many are calling for Les Miles' head on a pike.
I only watch Michigan on ESPN during bowl season. I'm beginning to hate what the "four letter network" is becoming, both editorially, and as a five dollar a month addition to my TV bill.
Doesn't your hand have to be above your shoulder for a fair catch? Herbie was all over it like last weeks' catch that wasn't.
A crappy game. LSU needs to bring out the Water Boy.
This game is horrid. They talk up Upshaw for getting to Jefferson but NO ONE COVERED HIM!
Yet we got all this grief about how the Sugar Bowl sucked, how sloppy it was and that neither team belonged. LSU doesn't look like they belong in this game right now.
Another title is that no one will be talking about Urban Meyer being the best coach in college football anymore.
That and the agonizing "what could have been"'s for MSU.
So who else is not watching this game?
Probably not that many people on the freakin' live blog dude, at least by choice.
Me. The game was not only boring enough the first time but the obvious rematch makes it a no go for me.
I'm there with you. The only reason I'm interested in this game is for scouting purposes for next year. They said Richardson is leaving and they mentioned that their OC is going to Colorado State. It looks like they have 8 starting seniors that will be gone and who knows how many juniors. I hope they win just so there's a more likely chance for people to leave early for the draft. Anything to make the UM match up next year a bit easier.
Considering turning the game off. This is just boring.
This may be the worst game of the year for me, and I watched Louiseville take on Kentucky.
I dunno man, Alabama/LSU Vol. 1 was pretty damn boring as well. I'm not watching this game but I can only imagine it's as boring as the first considering the stats. Probably looks just like our game where one team ran down the field and choked every time while the other looked just plain bad...
self-applying thumb screws now . . .
I feel like Mathieu is going to come up big soon.
Not unless they put him on offense...
He may be the best option at qb right now.
How the hell does LSU shit the bed in the secondary so often?
Jarrett Lee? Yes, please...
great tackle by Jefferson!
WELL SAID, SIR. September can't come soon enough.
That was ghy out of freshman Denard decision making
At least Jefferson can make a tackle
That's one of the worst interceptions I've ever seen. Reminiscent of Stanley Jackson tossing it to Andre Weathers (except Jefferson wasn't about to be sacked).
sequences that I have witnessed in a football game. That was one fearsome tackle by LSU's QB.
Why bother talking to jefferson on the phone?
Jefferson looks like he's gonna curb-stomp someone...
These overrated chants are hilarious.
Give Jarrett Lee a chance! Nothing to lose now!
How does a leg get in that position? Broken femur? Damn.
and Jefferson is looking around like it was someone else's fault. And this is the best team in the land??
jordan jefferson is a joke
What the hell was that? If Lee doesn't get put in, then Les has really gone mad.
with this offense? I get that Alabama is stout, but wow. Jefferson is not very smart. And, 'Bama seems to know every single play that LSU is running.
I hope the AP voters have the balls to vote Oklahoma State #1.
For what? Eeking by Stanford?
You make it seem like Stanford is a bad team... Also, they still won in the end.
And Alabama will have plastered LSU after tonight, circling back to the Iowa State vs. LSU argument.
Are you kidding me?! Bam a is breaking the unanimous #1 over their knee
Haven't seen a leg bent like that in a while. Godspeed, young man.
A Bama win would be good for Michigan even if their entire defense leaves we'll get the name recognition by beating Alabama.
The frustrating part is that this should have been us in 2006, taking our revenge on Ohio after the close loss in Columbus...
of the aerial coverage of a dome, nothing like it.
If Moseley is out for awhile...he ain't gonna have a scholie no more. Sincerely, Saban.
LSU did not show up on the offensive side for this game. Too tight? Too redundant? 'Bama's defense is good, and LSU's offense is not one for the ages. But srsly, 2 first downs all game? COME ON MAN.
This is really pathetic so far. I don't care how great the defense is, two first downs is just flat out inexcusable.
What are the odds LSU gets two TDs plus a 2 pt conversion. Unless LSU goes to their other QB and he sparks them.
How many Smelleys and Shelleys on Alabama? So many Smelleys and Shelleys
I met a traveller in an antique land
Who said 'Six vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert
And on the pedestal these words appear
My name is Ozymandias, King of Ants
Alabama, King of Ants
At least this game is going faster than normal, seeing as how it's played at ESS EEE SEE SPEEEEEEEEEED
You know how in OT teams have to start going for TDs after enough series? Can they enforce that rule for the entire 4th quarter in this game?
I think the rule is that you have to go for two, but I see what you did there...
Is already under that rule.
LSU asshats booing Jefferson. That would be the equivalent of Michigan fans booing Denard or Devin during a game.
"Jordan Jefferson is to Denard Robinson as video porn is to the felt reality of human love."
-David Foster Wallace, paraphrased
Is it too late to take the Heisman from RG3 and give it to Jordan Jefferson? What a playmaker!
Scouting for next year;
McCarron picks up blitzes very well. Blitzes CANNOT be telegraphed off the edge, or must have a safety cheating up to cover the vacated receiver.
Bamas LBs are VERY good, but very few of the LSU O-line getting to the second level.
Bama DBs very aggressive, working through WR blocks on bubble screens. Partly due to lack of a deep ball by Jefferson I guess.
Borges better work on vertical passing with Denard in the offseason, and our WRs NEED to run better routes against these DBs.
Chances that most of these kids are still on the team next year? Highly unlikely. This Alabama team won't be the one in JerryWorld.
There is a lot of depth on that Alabama team with the 2384923984 schollies they gave out.
I think they lose their center and the Outland winner will probably go pro. Their offensive line against our DTs worries me.
Lol @ Jefferson getting booed...
Is Lee hurt or something? I have the game on mute over there, and I didn't read anything about this game ahead of time on account of, you know, it being pointless and all.
But now it's becoming a little bit interesting as an exercise in futility and embarrassment.
So why isn't Jarrett Lee in? Why wouldn't you put him in that last series, or, better, the one before?
Hope most of these buggers for Bama are graduating or declaring for the NFL
making our Sugar Bowl effort look like Fielding Yost's "point a Minute" teams. Wow.
LSU is done
He is a spitting image of Trent Richardson. He will be tough to defend next year.
When they have superior talent they can put up a lot of points. They typically have better athletes. The problem is when they a good defense their WRs get no seperation and Jefferson isn't accurate enough or good enough of a decision maker to make them pay. And with Bama having a good D, it means they can rush 4 and watch Jefferson just stand back there and look like he has no clue, which is what is happening.
Michigan has a really good offense when they can get seperation at the WR position. It opens up the run game and makes them unstoppable. When they struggle doing that the whole offense bogs down (see: MSU, Ill., VT).
LSU has the same problem. LSU has a good offense verse bad teams, inflating their ranking. When a team doesn't have to respect anything longer than 10 yards they are screwed.
LSU, Y U NO TACKLE?
TOUCHDOWN!!! Oh, wait. Nevermind. Everyone go back to your business. Nothing to see here!
It's almost like touchdowns are not meant to be scored.
Thought we had a TD there....7 qrts ,no TDs
The only thing that I can figure is that Alabama is trying to increase the amount of money Allstate will donate in scholarships by only scoring by field goals.
This is bordering on a blowout
The best thing Alabama did was game plan a more aggressive offense. It's causing LSU to respect the whole field and therefore is opening up the game more. Bama is moving the ball as both teams could potentially move the ball now. They are still struggling a bit, as they should against a good D, but they can at least move it.
Has a field goal kicker ever been the mvp of a nat'l championship game?
Is the kicker the MVP? I mean seriously.
Was it the same kicker on all five?
for most FG attempted and tied all bowl record for 5 successful.
only a two possession game. Odds aren't with LSU though.
21 - 0, anyone?
my wife in the sack.
I mean, just sayin'. You might want to take a good long look in the mirror.
... and she's dead.
That might be an improvement.
24-0 eight field goal fest by AL. See how close I can get.
This is the most pathetic NCG since Oklahoma's a few years back,
Hopefully there will be BCS chaos, that's all I care about.
If LSU continues to flounder there will be no chaos.
How ESPN will spin this into a positive headline..."Defense wins Championships..." Bullshit.
can be really proud of their 6th in a row.
In the words of George Costanza: "Well, that's it for me! You've been great!" I'll catch what I "missed" tomorrow on Sportscenter.
Jarrett Lee cannot be a happy camper right now. I think you've got to give him a shot at this point.
LSU just got a FIRST DOWN!!!!!!!!!!! A FIRST DOWN, man. Do you know how amazing that is?
I kid, I kid. Lee should have been in two series ago.
Does Miles just go back to being a crazy damn Yankee who won with Saban's players in LSU fans eyes?
It depends on how drunk they are.
After this game they will be clamoring for his firing!
this team-with his (over)recruits-through an undefeated season, played an incredibly difficut schedule, won the S.E.C., and-this game not withstanding-had a pretty good year. I think people will still love him.
They will not be happy that he benched the QB who went 9-0 in favor of the guy who got suspended, especially when said player stunk up the joint in the title game.
Any sports fans before?
Particularly from the South?
I kind of don't want either team to score a TD so that the rest of the football world can mock them.
is the Tides' defense making the LSU offense look bad, versus the LSU offense making the Tide defense look amazing.
Well Lsu is averaging 38 pts a game so....
You know what's really going to be pathetic? The kicker is going to be named most outstanding player of the national championship game...
Y U still play Jefferson?
Man, I just don't get why they keep sending him out there. Not only is Jefferson completely ineffective he's bitching at his own players.
Superdome y u not like offense.
The Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints, doesn't like offense...
I hate LSU. And Alabama. In fact, I think that right about now I hate everyone south of the Ohio River. I'm cheering against whoever's on offense, because I find their total failure to be entertaining.
I hate everyone south of Toledo.
LSU fans will be hearing "Jordan Jefferson dropping back to pass" in their nightmares for years.
I wonder what Michael Weinreb will write about this game? If ours was so horrible and boring then what will he say about this?
along the lines about two outstanding defenses clashing.
Same attitude as that 20 year old looking jackass in the New Orleans paper who trashed the teams after the game. Wonder how much he's loving LSU's performance tonight.
What a great play call!
4 down offense for LSU? Unless their defense scores, they're running out of time.
What the hell is the LSU OC thinking?!
fellas manning the lines could somehow be considered. . . attractive. . . by people? I know that this is partly the Glenmorangie talking, but. . . whoa.
You've got to give Lee a chance...
The mad hatter seems to be taking a page out of Carr/DeBord's play book tonight. I expected a little more gun slingin'.
roid rage, but. . . the same thought came tendrilling through my cranium not five minutes ago.
watching this game feels relative to stickin a pinecone up my ass. but thats not gona stop me from watching the end!
#1 Bama fg kicker #2 Long snapper #3 Holder
There it is "This is one of the best defensive performances of all time."
Time for Jon Stewart.
Allstate is paying Alabama's college fund a LOT of money tonight!!
Musberger has stepped up his hyping efforts albeit unconvincingly.
If Brent says Honey Badger one more time I might throw up
Over under was 157...which I thought was a crazy exaggeration. Mushbooger has to be getting dangerously close to that number. Who has the count?
Would have been a great play if the gunners were just a little bit apart. And how long was it gonna take the Refs to blow that one dead?
No kidding! Worst whistle work ever....
out to square of with Alabama on offense Les. In no way can it be worse than what you have done for the first 3 qtrs.
Is killing it right now. "The honey badger picks it up dangerously, The honey badger fears no man".
That Nissan commercial was the most entertaining moment thus far
So, let's look forward to next year. Which SEC teams will be in the national championship?
It will be Rematch III - LSU vs. Bama. Total points scored? Let's say 21...all FGs.
No...wait, scratch A&M, make that Missouri.
How many puns is Brent gonna make about the Honey Badger video....
"Honey Badger better care about the Tide!"
"Badger goes down that time!"
This game is epically bad. SEC apologists I'm all ears.
Lee is really getting screwed. He was their QB most of this season, including in the win over Bama. His benching never really made sense in the first place - Jefferson's always been inconsistent. Throw in the fact that Jefferson's gotten in trouble off the field and it's a real headscratcher. I wonder if this is an issue in their locker room.
Trey DePriest.. Remember him?
THROW THE EFING BALL YOU ARENT GOING TO RUN IT HOLY HELL.
Did Les Miles hire Mike DeBord as a special gues OC for this game? Sheesh. Throw the ball!
Which game was worse?
This one or the first one.
each is worse than the other. they are both so bad that they defy the workings of traditional logic.
No, just short of it. Mush-mouth even realizes this game is a joke.
Musbergers excitement about LSU almost getting to the 50 just explains how bad this game really is.
They crossed the 50!
Musbergers excitement about LSU almost getting to the 50 just explains how bad this game really is.
You know its bad when the excitement for LSU is whether or not they can get to the 50
53 minutes into the game and LSU finally crosses the 50
Note to Musberger: crossing the 50 is never exciting.
Next year will feature a 3 team SEC playoff since they are the best conference number 3 will play 2 and the winner plays number 1. Wait don't give the BCS comitee ideas.
Jefferson fails at running the option.
I'd hate to be the guy having to clean up that announcer's booth after listening to these two just fluff off the SEC.
Jefferson can't even run the option properly
Jefferson is terrible at the option, he always tosses it at the last second to lose 3 yards.
Can they join the field goal party?
Note to Musberger: no penalties for a team all game also isn't exciting.
Bama's defense hasn't done anything worth noting. LSU's offense is just making them look like an NFL team.
Agreed. Predictable and one-dimensional offense for LSU.
As bad as LSU's offense is, Bama has given up very little. This is still a great, great defense. Poor offense is making them look better, but Bama could have probably 8 people if not more drafted on defense in the upcoming draft.
Are they not amazing?
Jefferson is missing his blocks when he runs. I'm not talking the option but when he scrambles. he has people set up and is failing to use them and he's leaving 5 yards on the field almost everytime he scrambles.
but talking about the option, Jefferson is the worst at it.
This is seriously like watching Nick Sheridan again. Jefferson is putrid.
4th and 18.....and Jefferson fumbles it away...
Fear the Tide, Honey Badger
I think even that play could be blamed on LSU's offense.
Agreed. Their playcalling has been atrocious.
So does LSU only have like 10 plays in their playbook? It's like the same thing every drive.
an option play
glad we got Brady Hoke and not Les Miles
The two time National Champ coach.
And with that, a TD.
If aliens were watching this as their first football game kickers would be gods and the sport would suck
Also 5 FG's isn't a "mauling"
If a touchdown is going to come, it will probably be from Bama in garbage time.
Man, Bama's D is playing out of their mind tonight. But geez, LSU is being so uncreative on offense, and frankly, they need to change their QB. Also, LSU is just not getting the big plays on their defense and special teams that they have thrived on all year. A little unexpected.
I don't like either team, but I think Bama embodies more of the SEC arrogance, so I was hoping they'd lose.
That's what happens when they replace their bottom 10%. But... Delaney doesn't care.
What do you want Delaney to do? He has no control over whether or not SEC teams oversign.
commissioners can prevent oversigning. The other conferences don't even do it. The B12, P12 would be on board.
Unless HONEY BADGER comes up big, this is a pathetic end to a pathetic game.
I called the touchdown.
Honest question, really. Bama was utterly prepared on offense, despite still not scoring a touchdown. They had a plan - throw on first down - and it worked pretty well. What was LSU's plan? Running the option? Getting sacked? Their offense right now is making Michigan's performance against VT look competent!
EDIT: Touchdown Bama. Game. Set. Match.
Do my eyes deceive me? Was that a TD!?!?
A shutout. Boring game.
What is that cop doing?
I blame LSU's offense. If you can't move the ball at least a little bit, the other team is going to take advantage at some point.
Of course he misses the extra point. I hate this game so much
That guy must have had 21-0 as his prediction, too...
Got fucking robbed!!!
I think the argument would be stronger if LSU was winning
Was everyone said OSU would get smoked by LSU
is going to have to poop an awful lot of excellence to pull this one out. Let the grass-chewing commence.
Chewing...shit, he better start smoking some in a crazy peace pipe that gives him a vision of a Tiger that grants three wishes. His wishes? TD, TD, sweet new hat.
that Bama shouldn't be in this game.
1. LSU beat them already.
2. See 1, but in Alabama's home stadium.
3. See 1.
4. Repeat 3.
Will catch the score and think Bama scored 3 TDs on LSU.
Well there goes the controversy. Bama outright. The BCS lives on.
LSU picked the worst possible game to absolutely not show up. And Bama looked hyper-prepared. And the result is an interesting, but frankly, not entertaining game.
It's never happened in the BCS era, but I can't recall one in the old polls-and-bowls era either.
I just threw up in my mouth a little. See you next fall Coach Satan.
Watch, Miles will make the change at QB now. "Win the game, son!"
ALABAMA IS GONNA SCORE 7 POI................
......Double Field Goal!!!! 6 Points!!!!!!!!!
Not going to lie, New Orleans looks to be the dirtiest/"trashiest" city in the country.
Alabama and Okie State.
With his remote and a beer, thinking "fuck you very much Dave Brandon"?
Brandon's going to have a hard time selling a lot of those $350 tickets.
Good to know we have a system where the most important regular season game in 5 years ended up being completely meaningless
How would that not be a Unneccessary Roughness? The whistle blows, then like 2 or 3 guys still jump on the pile
How bad is LSU's other QB if he's STILL not seeing the field?
Jarrett Lee is actually pretty good - 62% completion rate and a 14-3 TD/INT ratio. He was their QB for most of the season.
It will give us all the incentive we could ever need.
The defending National Champs against a Top 10 ranked Michigan squad featuring Denard Robinson in Jerry World. ABC sports execs must have a raging hard-on right now.
Also, LSU down 21 just threw a swing pass behind the LOS after Jefferson chucked one into the turf.
I don't understand why they didn't give Jarrett Lee a chance. The whole offense and offensive coaches were pathetic today for LSU.
I did predict all field goals--but I am closing in on my score.
LSU is getting their testicles handed to them here. P.S. Sure Nick, sure.
You're down 21 with 3 minutes left in the BCS Championship.
Why are you punting?????
is not cheap?
Les is down 21 with 3:00 to play and he punts? WTF? He's quitting.
I know the chances are slim, but why are you punting here?
To spare his offense more embarrassment.
How is Musberger acting like that offsides hurt Alabama?
These teams don't really have that great of defenses... the offenses in the SEC are just so inept that it makes them look good. Seriously, I turned it off after Jefferson tried that horrid shovel pass right into the arms of the Bama linebacker. That was disgustingly bad to look at.
And where is this vaunted LSU defense? Bama's just marching up and down the field on them no problem.
I think LSU was no match for Ess Eee See SPEED.
There are about 15 NFL players in this game on D.
