Well, it'll probably be a short thread, since everyone has already said they're not watching tonight. But for those that are, it's the end of college football on the field for awhile. Gameday on. Pregame in about half an hour. It'll keep us busy till the Two and a Half Men Open thread starts later tonight.
National Championship Game Open Thread
Even though I said I might watch some of this game, I can't help but wonder if the "Antiques Roadshow Open Thread" for the PBS nuts like myself wouldn't get quite a bit more action.
No, I will tune in for a while anyway, I bet - I admit to that. It's football. I'll discover the value of the old stuff in my house tomorrow.
GOD THIS GAME SUCKS.
most unentertained game ever! but on the other side, Michigan scores, they're better than LSU.
MING DYNSATY!?!?! Unfucking believable. That grandma had no idea what she had, I could have sworn that vase was a low 3 star pick up for sure. Damn rivals south american bias.
I'll watch it, but it is going to be an SEC slurp fest like you've never heard. I know we lost to USC and Ohio lost to Florida, but at that time we were the number 1 and number 2 teams in America, so I don't get the whole rematch thing now when we didn't have one in 2006.
i thought Allstate Suger bowl = Allstate national championship
Erin Andrews said that the average ticket price is $1,800. That is absurd. How do people evern afford to attend these games?
That's actually pretty cheap. If I remember correctly during the first matchup there were students able to turn their $10 dollar ticket into $10,000+ because of the ridiculous demand.
Granted that was for certain tickets but still I think the average was pretty high too.
is how she hooked up with Aaron Rodgers, Bret Bielema, and those eyes she was giving Brady Hoke after the UTL win.
Erin Andrews: I love Brady Hoke.
huh? Where did this one come from?
Wha? When? How have I never heard this before if it happened?
That's the average scalper price. The fans probably paid X+~120 where X=Mandatory Donation for the priviledge of clicking on the buy ticket link.
- It's the last college football game for about 8 months
- It's a game between two amazing teams
- Both teams will be putting the most effort possible into this game
- Me not watching will prove absolutely nothing and make absolutely no difference
- It's the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
So yes, I'm watching.
It is still Mythical National Championship.
I'd be willing to bet at least half the people who said they aren't watching that game tonight will have it on. They're probably putting together the nachos right now.
I will watch it for 3 reasons:
Last college football game for a while.
I hate Saban and want him to be crushed.
I love good defenses and good defensive battles.
Not to detract from their accomplishments because I think both defenses are good but there's something to be said for the lack of offensive ability by either team. Most SEC offenses aren't that good either. Some people last time saw a "defensive battle". Alabama can't move the ball through a wet paper bag. AJ McCarron is awful. You stop Richardson, you stop them.
They're #12 and #17 respectively in scoring offense. Obviously some of that ranking is because they're allowing about 20ppg between them, but that's not exactly bad.
The SEC teams are really good, whether you like it or not. There's a reason they have a really strong showing every bowl season, regardless of why you think they are good.
I generally agree about defensive battles, but this is crazy. It's not even close to entertaining when neither team can BEGIN to move the ball.
ended Tuesday as far as I'm concerned
Sure it will be an SEC slurpfest... Howeva
We have relevant interest here:
1 - A Michigan Man coaching
2 - Scouting an opponent for next year
The over-signing NC game. Over the past 4 years Bama has signed 113 players and LSU 105. Even with the mass amount of RRods attrition we've only signed 93. The ess eee see isn't better, they just play by different rules.
I want every Bama player with NFL aspiration to be satisfied with there college careers and move along.
If the game is still on around 11 when I'm done playing, I might watch some of it. I hate both teams just as much as I hate Ohio and shitty coffee.
Why are people not watching? Just because your team's not in it or what? It's the national championship between two very good teams, I see no reason why a real football fan wouldn't want to watch this game.
but it just doesn't interest me. No interest in watching a rematch. And it's not really a national championship. It's the BCS championship, which means it was decided using politics and opinion. Irritates me to even think about watching it.
If it really didn't interest you, why are you here?
I'll be watching the shit out of this game.
With any luck, there won't be any shit left for me to watch out of it
that the best way to get attention to what a farce an SEC rematch is would be by having low ratings. The best we can do is not watch. It also satisfies a little place in the gut that's been taking it from ESPN about the SEC for years. I'm done with that and speaking out by my absence. And I don't feel like I'm missing out on a thing by it.
I dislike both teams. I dislike the reason for this game. I dislike the BCS.
Rooting for the Mad Hatter and his Michigan roots. Also, hoping to see Saban's robot-like visage crumble when Les beats him yet again.
Go Les beat Satan.
I said I wouldn't watch it, but I think my love of college football will overtake my hate of the SEC slurpfest by ESPN. I won't get any more college football until the end of August so I need my fix.
Watching for three reasons:
1) Girlfriend went to Alabama
2) Live and teach in New Orleans
I think you mean FOOOOOTBAAAWWWWW.
I'm watching it because it is the last college football game of the year, but most importantly i hope that this game is a pathetic as it was the first time they played(link). The stats don't lie.
Keep in mind the team that wins this game will probably have to win it the way Michigan did against VT.
I'm rooting for the offenses....
I'm rooting for the kickers!
On a side note, how many times do you think we will here"honey badger" tonight?
I say 157 times. Who's got an over/under?
Is a cure for narcolepsy.
To root against Satan anytime you can. Go Les.
why the BCS championship is on a Monday. Do they not want people to watch? Maybe keep ticket prices gone? At least it connects to a weekend, but seriously, Tuesday is probably the only worse day
what wrong with monday? did you ever hear of something called monday night football? the hoops title game is monday as well. I'd guess monday is the best night of the week for this in terms of ratings.
I'm going to bed way before the game is over, that's the problem. However, the NCAA obviously didn't want to compete with the NFL on Saturday or Sunday and didn't want to play the game on Friday (too many casual fans would pass).
I really dont mean to be dickish but I used to have that problem when I was 13 and my parents wouldn't let me stay up to watch the MNF.
Seriously though, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I was in LA last week and saw the end of the cowboys giants game. I didn't know that's what NBC does after the game.
I give up...this game has numbed my brain
I forgot about the game altogether until I saw this thread.
Also, is the highest density of people in America with less than a high school education currently found inside the Superdome?
wild guess, I'd say there are a lot of Alabama and LSU grads there
with tickets going for 1000 & up.
I mean I should be working on homework but nah, f it ima do what i do best, watch tv
IS TURRIBLE Kenny, JUST TURRIBLE!
In other news...
I'm rooting for a power outage. Not going to watch this travesty. Or maybe a whole lot of missed FGs, can't balme SEC DEFENSE for those. And then we can watch the kickers suddenly come down with boneitis and recieve medical scholarships.
How about those LSU dancers? Boiiiiiiiiing
From a Michigan point of view, isn't it better to root for Bama for 2 reasons:
1 - Opportunity to beat defending National Champ in September
2 - Winning a National Championship may entice more Alabam juniors to go to NFL, thus increasing the odds of point 1.
Yeah, but is it worth rooting for Satan's son and spending all of eternity in the pits of hell?
3) Alabama win increases the chances (however small) of BCS armageddon.
Man, that was a brutal National Anthem
I thought the same thing. I don't remember ever seeing a singer's voice actually crack during the national anthem.
Anthems I've ever heard. His voice was cracking FERGODSAKES
An sec team is going to lose. Whatever the excellent reasoning I'm not rooting for Saban. If lsu wins I might even tune into Finebaum tomorrow oduring the commute home
I'll be curious to see if Bama runs Mathieu a few times after that stunt he pulled on Kirkpatrick last game.
Is such a crock of SHIT!!' fuck the rematch
get over it already, the large majority of the coaches and media voted these teams 1/2. and why do you care, unless you're an ok st fan, the emotion behind this is so bizarre
About 2006. We didn't get a rematch why should the SEC get one!!!
because the voters thought Alabama was worthy and we werent. Two completely different teams and situations.
Still Weaksauce and I would rather see Okie state rather than a rematch. Just my opinion! Besides Bama had their shot at home and lost
As I predicted, I said I wouldn't watch the game and I caved.
I hope Alabama wins just for the BCS Chaos it could cause.
How can you think LSU-Alabama and not be reminded of McEnroe-Bjorg?
- random ESPN producer
....at "The Thrilla In Manila". My sense of literary injustice disappeared right there.
Saban and McEnroe are of similar moral character.
YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!!!!
Pedro Cerrano overlooking the coin toss
Man...these two fan bases are just nutty. What a bunch of savages. Whats the over/under for amount of stabbings in the parking lot after the game?
The microphone can't handle Les Miles's craziness.
In his eyes isn't of this world.
Im praying to Tebow for a 3-0 LSU win in double OT
Is that the first time the Superdome has ever been called beautiful?
I was down there last week and was surprised, I thought the Superdome was awesome.
My girlfriend rented Water for Elephants and we are going to watch that instead. Not even mad...
You should be...still.
and then bargained for some sort of favor (oh face.)
anyone else notice the president from 24 was behind the coin toss?
from Major League
After 06 the fact that they promote that the game is a rematch...
Gotta love Disney
When was the last time anyone saw that on the first series in the Superdome? AMIRITE?
Brad Wing talks a little shit.
Lsu's punting is unbelievable
DJ Fluker needs to pull his uniform down or I'm going to have to post a pic of Andre Smith running.
Barkevious Mingo sighting
"McCarron is going to dump it off and that is Smelley"
- Brent Musburger
Im glad someone else thinks like I do. I lol'd at that one too.
Jesus, Alabama is just so big and fast. Those are some scary young men.
. . . that's what she said.
It would be chaos for the BCS and it'd be nice to beat the national champs at the beginning of next year.
Punting with a defense that gives up <9 ppg. Awesome.
Trent Richardson looks like one of the crab people.
would have gone for it on that 4th down.
The oversigning bowl?
Musburger needs to chill out
Bama sure does have a lot of seniors/guys leaving after this year.
Commercial. So stupid.
That's a horsecollar.
I thought so too at first glance, but he actually got dragged down by the shoulder pads. It just looked like a horsecollar because he just straight-up collapsed
Alabama could lose 3 LBs and 3 DBs if Hightower and kirkpatrick leave. That is quite a bit of production.
He's hurting really bad there.
Franchise mode on NHL '12? Yes, please.
just left the slot wide open (2nd down)
Did anyone else think that LSU's coverage unit tried just a bit TOO hard there?
Shot for a punt, field goal, and every 5 minutes there is not a touchdown
Minimum of 12 shots. Sounds like a college student's dream.
Maze, dude, I know you're tough, but take it easy man. let the trainers help you off. Hurts me just looking at ya.
You just injure it more trying to run off. Just fall down and get treatment, screw pride.
These *spontaneous* press conference commercials Ford runs were underrated in the dumb commercials thread earlier.
the season always moves way too fast. getting rained out during the western game is still fresh in my mind.
McCarren lucky he didn't get stripped from behind there.
That FG may be enough points to win this one.
Why do so many SEC bands share that, "baah, bu-dada-dada; GO (so and so)! Baah, bu-dada-dada; GO (so and so)!" song? No originality.
They made a deal with the devil for SEC speed, but they had to sacrifice intelligence and originality.
I always thought that was a Florida Gators thing, but it does seem like other teams (especially Alabama) are starting to use it. Am I wrong?
Ugh. Alabama's offense is sickening. LSU can't possibly have you beat on numbers everywhere on the field every play. Where is non-fumbling De'Anthony Thomas when you need him.
Throw to Tacopants gets intercepted by LSU receiver there.
Supreme open field tackling
You Are Looking Live At The National 'SEC Oversigning Medical Redshirt 'Roid Bowl ... Go LSU!
Yeah I can't contain my excitement. What brings you over here so often? Not meant to be dickish.
Not sure really. I've always been a fan of the top notch analysis and recruiting info found on this site. I also like seeing opposing viewpoints and engaging in debate. I've also roamed the UGA and Wisconsin forums over the past few weeks.
Fair enough. Keeping an open mind is always a good thing.
. Doesn't seem like a real heady player.
SEC academic standards on display. I'm glad to cheer for a university that I can be proud of off the field too.
O/U Wing punts? 11
Just think how good of a game Ok State and LSU could have been.
actually it would have been a joke. lsu made a mockery of oregon, a top 5 offense. osu is essentially the same team but with a far worse defense. lsu would have completely shut down osu, and the game would have been over by halftime.
somehow lsu and alabama are just miles ahead of everyone other team in the country, and ironically both with mediocre qbs at best.
Yeah ok. Somebody is watching a little too much ESPN. Oregon-LSU was a good game and Bama gave up 325 rushing yards to Georgia Southern...
Dee hart sighting
Bama apparently only trusts McCarron to throw into the flats.
At least OSU-LSU would have been exciting and offense-oriented. This is painful and feels exactly like the first game.
Wow, that catch by Norwood might just be the play of the game.
"Honey Badger better care about that one." Should be, Honey Badger better give a shit about that one.
Someone should show VaTech fans that catch. See how he had control of the ball and it didn't move when he hit the ground? That's a catch. Coale's was not.
Lsu might consider some kind of blitz on first down to rock bama's qb
I think someone should make a realistic version of that Nissan Frontier plane-saving commercial where the truck is crushed and there's a big explosion.
If Bama can score here I can see them running away with this one. Jordan Jefferson is terrible.
Bama will score - a FG.
final. book it.
More commercial bitching: Hyundai's way of showing you their loyalty is for YOU to buy another of their products. Someone explain how this makes any sense.
Anyone else giggle when you heard Brent say "he's got a wide-open Smelly..."? Lol
At the risk of sounding like a certain running back coach, Mathieu is like Kovacs...with SPEED!
Kovacs would have made that tackle
They have similar styles, are under-sized, and excel in run support--except Mathieu can really move.
Eh, it's not a good fake unless you get it to your long-snapper.
Short by a centimeter.
EDIT: not so much
From Brady Hoke.
But that was a WAY favorable spot.
Challenge the spot?
Love the call
Spot looked good enough to me
Bad spot. He was short.
How does Alabama get by with such pedestrian QBs over the years? McCarron, McElroy, John Parker Wilson, Croyle, etc.
I realize some of the above are not Saban recruits but you would think a blue chip quarterback would love to walk into a team like Bama's that always has solid defenders and a stout running game.
Sims was a big time recruit who just didn't beat out mc Arron. I think he's a redshift freshman. I also heard analysis that both teams do try qb-dependent systems because there's a noticeable drop off every time you graduate a qb
I think they make it abundantly clear to these QBs that you will not throw the ball much, you will hand off and let the defense win the game, and most good QBs don't want to deal with that. If I was an elite QB prospect, handing off to a bunch of talented (if a bit overrated) RBs and having a coach who prides himself on his defense over offense doesn't seem very appealing.
The person responsible for the Tostitos commercials should be fired immediately.
Completely agree. And while we're on the subject of shitty commercials, who came up with the Subway "baby voice" commercials? Terrible idea. Truly awful.
Yes. OSU is close, but not quite at their level.
Puh-leeeeze. Michigan's gonna smoke these fools in September. #deliriouslyoptimistic
Do you know how much of an asshat someone will look if they bought this and alabama loses?
I more interested in that framed photo of a NASCAR crash on the right.
scratch that.. it's a TV..
Now that's safety play
So much for that fake field goal meaning anything.
Alright, I'm really hoping that Terry Richardson ends up being our Tyrann Mathieu (you know after he adds 20 lbs). Both 5'9", both play special teams, both have good closing speed...too much to ask for?
It's always too much to ask for a kid to become a first team All-American.
Disagree. It's a known expectation in my house that my kids will become first team all-americans. Demand excellence from the beginning, and what can go wrong?
Todd Marinovich takes a break from shooting up heroin and says sup?
I didn't know I DVR'd the first game.
Saban: "I love you, you're our guy, miss the next one, and you're getting a medical hardship."
This is like watching a big budget movie that goes NOWHERE!
Yeah, I saw Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull...
Does Maze get to catch a flight with the team after the game or will Saban cut him at halftime?
LSU's exceptional punter with so very many opportunities reminds me of Zoltan the magnificent.
That 70% of that roll tide D will be in the NFL before we line up against them!
Kirk Herbstreit adds nothing to those deodorant commercials
Lame ass commercials
Borges coaching LSU's offense? :)
Man i wish I was watching some Okie State O right about now.
Totally agree. We've seen this game before, and it was pretty boring. I want to see teams that have different styles clash, not two teams that play not to lose.
This is almost an insult to Tressel-ball. People forget, but he opened up the offense when he had playmakers (like with Troy Smith). Saban and Miles would never even try to foster a competent offense.
but it's not like Tressel wanted to get away from it, he just made it work with what he had.
I love this continuos refrain from fans of a team who for most of the last 40 years have wanted to play very much like this, tough d and conservative o. Not to mention that thus far Bama is kicking their ass.
I like O and was excited as anybody when we brought in RR, for example. So watching defensive football on TV is not my cup of tea if I don't really care about the teams.
Yes, you're right. They have an insurmountable 9 point lead.
I'm starting to remember why I wasn't going to watch this game.
At least our sloppy shit-tastic New Orleans-based game was entertaining in its sloppy shittyness.
Only to us
"Smelly, well sniffed out." Nice Brent.
Hey, he's got to do something to keep himself entertained.
Bama is threatening to double the lead.
All jokes aside about the quality or boring nature of the game...this Bama defense is SCARY. Who are the big names on this defense and how many can we expect to go pro?
They lose a lot next year. Add the possible early departures, and they could lose even more. If Hightower and Kirkpatrick leave, which they very well could, they would be losing 3/4 of their LB and 3/4 of their DBs.
That Alabama offensive line makes Wisconsin's line look like smurfs
Wisconsin outweighs thematic every position. The only heavy guy is theft and ogles by is bigger
Doesn't bama have a 6'2 and 6'3 OG starting?
While I don't particularly care for Alabama, I'm rooting for all of its juniors to have big games. Chase your NFL dreams, gentlemen!
i think you are exactly right
Color me surprised that McCarron is absolutely outplaying Jefferson. Nothing else about this game has been overly surprising, but he's playing a damn solid game right now.
Haha, I really hope LSU pulls out a close on after struggling early. That totally proves that LSU didn't belong in this game and just got lucky.
LSU deserves to be there no matter what. It's Bama who has something to prove.
This is going to b a high scoring affair!
high-scoring than that last one, anyway. Six-zip already in the second quarter!
Final score: AL 24 LSU 0. All eight of AL's scores are field goals.
LSU looks incredibly unspectacular tonight. Give Bama credit at least for trying to throw downfield and fake the field goal. This game is still boring, though. It's like LSU doesn't realize this is a title game. Then again, maybe it isn't. If LSU keeps it close they could still end up the AP champs.
They looked unspectacular on offense all year. If the BCS wanted spectacular they would have manipulated the system to put OkSt and Oregon in the championship. Might as well have, they do what they want anyway.
I'm starting to understand why no one watched football in 1955.
+1,000,000 to you sir.
Is that for 2 game total or just this one? (*sarcasm* for any sec grads on thread)
Hell, that was an easy under if true. I would have assumed it would have been upper 20's tops.
I think bama has 5 senior starters and up to 4 jrs could leave, I think people expect Kirkpatrick and Hightower to go, possibly Lester too.
I'm glad I put on my big-boy underwear for this big-boy football game so far
Somehow I feel like I've seen this game already.
To be fair, the Sugar Bowl was 6-0 until Hoke pooped rainbows to the tune of 10 points in the last :49 of the first half...
You're not supposed to mention that.
But isn't Miles one of the originators of pooping rainbows?
His only come in batshit crazy fourth quarter decisions...
That stat about the LSU drives basically resulting in 35 yards of offense says all you need to know about (if you are an SEC homer) how great the defenses in the conference are, or (if you are a realist) just how bad the offenses can be.
And for the record, the first half of UM's game against VT, a game that I saw people say "set back football", had about 3 times the offense and that included an unexpected injury to Molk to start the game.
Cept this Lsu team best the rose bowl and orange bowl champs comfortably.
I never felt that Oregon was in the groove that game because it was the first match-up of the year between those two teams, but right now I definitely feel like they could move the ball on them. With WVU, I think that the Orange bowl was a bit of an abberation - this was an average team that had a million breaks go for them in that game.
If Jefferson waits for his blockers on 2nd down he picks up 10 yards.
These defenses are really good and these offenses suck.
Eh, I don't think LSU's is very good, but Alabama actually has the playmakers on their offense. Not to mention that OL.
Tell that to psu
The head of the BCS committee? Did you get a degree from an SEC West school? Your obsession on the topic is frightening.
Which is pretty good. Wisc put up 45 though, NW 24, Houston 30.
Alabama had 359 total yards and forced 3 turnovers. They scored a 52 and a 50 yard field goal. Their longest TD drive was 69 yards. Penn St defense was inflated due to the teams they played. Bama's offense isn't that good, their defense is just great and sets up the offense.
You mean the PSU that had a "QB controversy" in the sense that neither QB could move the ball, turned it over deep in their own territory, and generally fell apart.
Yes, these are good defenses, but only ESPN believes that it is unstoppable.
Jordan Jefferson has the concentration of a gnat.
this thing is over.
Oops sorry, switching back and forth with Andromeda Strain. I already know what happens there as well. Although the book and the movie had different endings; here's hoping the regular season and postseason have different endings.
shots of Herbstreit and Fussbudget fast asleep in barcaloungers.
Alabama should be up much more.
But my dream is Hoke and Mattison building the closest facsimile to this as possible without signing 20 defenders every year and cutting the worst ten.
Exactly. We would absolutely love this shit.
Jefferson: NOT a gamer
Please, musberger. You took one look at that "YouTube" and turned it off cuz you "find gays yucky".
And it could be an insurmountable lead.
LOL looky who was discovered on Bourbon Street! Harvey Updyke.
aka the auburn tree poisoner.
Isnt he supposed to be doing time?
Pretty sure he hasn't even been proven guilty yet. It isn't even for sure if he was telling the truth about poisoning the trees.
Episodes are EXCELLENT tonight.
destroyed. This one is so over.
Alabama couldn't have had it go any better in the first half. Now they'll run the shit out of Richardson in the second half to keep LSU off the field. Genius game all around by the Alabama staff.
LSU needs to cut off the quick dump offs; be interesting to see whether Saban has tahe nads to air it out when they start to cheat up.
whether I'm really all that into football. Or maybe genius in football just doesn't equate so readily with the sciences or arts?
FIELD GOALS GET ME SO JACKED UP!!!
McCarron played very well that half.
I never thought a football game could be more boring than their first matchup. We were wrong. We didn't know! We didn't know!!!
Hey quit watching this crap! Boycott Boycott Boycott
First one to 9. I don't make the rules.
I already saw this game and it was terrible last time too. Night.
Fuck this field goal fest. What is this, ausie rules football?
My ESPN Gamecast says it is 9-0 now.
what comes after 9? I think Bama scored the max number of points
I forgot about "The Factor"
Leslie needs to warmup Jarrett Lee for the second half.
129 FEET of offense for LSU so far
Is a phenomenal post!
What is average age of this thread. Can't believe how many Michigan fans apparently seemingly have no appreciation for defense whatsoever. As I said if we could play D like this we would be ecstatic.
repeating yourself, and with a certain sour humorlessness, too.
Youre right but How can I not. Every post is another lame comment about the offenses or the bcd or what else is on tv. It's embarrassing.
No, what's embarrassing is the offenses in this game. I LOVE hard nosed defense, and I can't wait for Mattison to get his set up, but that doesn't mean it's always fun to watch. I'd prefer to watch UofM's bend but don't break defense, which is at least entertaining--there is the POSSIBILITY of a touchdown before Kovacs pulls you out of thin air on the one. Just sayin' . . .
I don't necessarily mind a low-scoring game, but I do hope someone scores a TD, finally.
more than great defense. Granted both teams have NFL athletes on defense, but both teams have shitty QBs.
Are you aware that Lsu played 13 games this year an scored 35 or more in 11 of them?
Are you LSU or Bama's SID or something?
My thinking is, the only team I want to see play defense is Michigan.
Everyone else can go to hell. I want to be entertained for a NC game, not feel like I'm watching a debate on CSPAN.
Death to the BCS, so many people are going to be screaming for a playoff if lsu winds up winning this like 12-9.
What is your obsession with hyping this game? Related to someone on the BCS committee? From SEC country? Work for ESPN? Your single-mindedness on the subject is tiring. Are you even bothering to watch the game or just telling people how wrong they are about it being a great game?
